INTRO
If you are just making a Priest Alliance side, don't really want to waste money at the AH for gear then here is a guide that might interest you. I will list worthwhile quest rewards and their quest and some good instance drop stuff that you might want to aim for. I won't cover EVERY item for Priests, just the notable ones that I feel are easy to get and a lot of people miss. All right, let's go to the guide.
EARLY LEVELS (1-12)
First early piece is the [item]Sleeping Robes[/item], but the downside is it is way out there in Teldrassil. Do I recommend as a non-night elf priest running way out there? No, but I recommend going that way for Darkshore (Best place to Level 12-16, I'd say). The quest is a bit annoying, if you are soloing it.
Other then that single robe, if you don't have TBC, you are out of luck. Bloodmyst Isle is the best place for low-level caster greens Alliance side hands down. Not that stats matter that much these early levels, anyways. But here are some easily obtainable items from Bloodmyst: [item]Rancher's Trousers[/item], [item]Scholar's Gloves[/item], and [item]Kurkenstoks[/item].
TEENS (13-19)
Now we are starting to get somewhere. First I got to say [item]Robe of the Keeper[/item]. Go to Loch Modan, go to the north guard tower, accept Filthy Paws and go directly east into the mines. Collect 4 boxes, run back, turn in and accept your generous reward.
[item]Kessel's Cinch Wrap[/item] is good, again another Bloodmyst Isle reward for a fairly simple quest.
[item]Harvester's Robe[/item] is a decent robe, I personally pick the Keeper one, but up to you. Anyways, go to Westfall, go to the Saldean's Farm and accept the quest The Killing Fields. Just run around and kill the Harvest Watchers. No problem.
Moving along, Darkshore hosts two good items for a penny-pinching Priest. [item]Timberland Armguards[/item] from WANTED: Murkdeep!, a quest you should be able to complete with a friend or wait a few levels. Then the [item]Evergreen Gloves[/item] from killing the Den Mother is pretty good for Priests.
I highly recommend [item]Emberstone Staff[/item] and [item]Lavishly Jeweled Ring[/item]. both found in the Deadmines on seperate bosses. The [item]Staff of Westfall[/item] is all right, but lacking Stamina and Intellect is just not that great. However, up to you.
MIDWAY (20-30)
Ah, now we are getting somewhere. FIrst off, [item]Luminescent Amice[/item] is just plain wonderful for doing a few easy quests in Atraanar in Ashenvale. http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=1035 has the info you need if interested.
[item]Silk Mantle of Gamn[/item] from a quest chain in the Wetlands is really good and easy to grab. Might want to consider it, if you are hurting for some good shoulders.
[item]Robe of Arugal[/item], [item]Belt of Arugal[/item], and [item]Feline Mantle[/item] are all great drops from the short Shadowfang Keep. If you are in the Wetlands, take ten minutes of your time and head up to Southshore for the flight path and keep LFG. All three are just fantastic for any caster, despite a bit of a lack of Stamina.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention [item]Wandering Boots[/item]. Go to Stormwind, find Brother Kristoff in the Cathedral area and accept the sorta long quest chain. Good boots, I always pick them up on any casters I roll (Alliance ones, anyways).
ENDING
Ah, this isn't the end of the guide (yet), I still have plenty of stuff to list and I'm working on it now so expect it up to 50 by next Saturday.
I have played priest for a long time and have leveled 2 priests to 60. With a careful selection of talents you can move from mob to mob with virtually no downtime whatsoever.
Discipline:
level - talent
10-14 - Wand Specialization 5/5
Wand spec is very good at low levels. Shield, dot and wand takes down mobs in no time at all with the extra 25% damage your wand.
Shadow:
level - talent
15-19 - Spirit Tap 5/5
20-21 - Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2
22-24 - Shadow Focus 3/5
25 - Mind Flay 1/1
26-27 - Improved Psychic Scream 2/2
28-29 - Shadow Focus 5/5
30-34 - Shadow Weaving 5/5
35 - Vampiric Embrace 1/1
36-38 - Shadow Reach 3/3
39 - Silence 1/1
Once you hit 40, go grab yourself a mount and head to your nearest priest trainer to get your talents reset. The higher level I became, the less I would use my wand. For this level, getting +10% shadow damage from the 'Darkness' talent, an extra +15% shadow damage dealt and -15% physical damage taken is much more important than +25% damage from wands.
Shadow:
Spirit Tap - Rank 5/5
Improved Shadow Word: Pain - Rank 2/2
Shadow Focus - Rank 3/5
Improved Psychic Scream - Rank 2/2
Improved Mind Blast - Rank 2/5
Mind Flay - Rank 1/1
Shadow Reach - Rank 3/3
Shadow Weaving - Rank 5/5
Silence - Rank 1/1
Vampiric Embrace - Rank 1/1
Darkness - Rank 5/5
Shadowform - Rank 1/1

Shadow:
41-42 - Improved Vampiric Embrace 2/2
Discipline:
level - talent
43-47 - Wand Specialization 5/5
48-49 - Improved Power Word: Fortitude 2/2
50-52 - Improved Power Word: Shield 3/3
53 - Inner Focus 1/1
54 - Martyrdom 1/2
55-57 - Meditation 3/3
58-60 - Mental Agility 3/5

After you hit level 60 it is then up to you how you want to spec your priest. There are many different possibilities of talent specs, many are listed here: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=12881515&sid=1
When leveling your priest try to get gear to improve you spirit, intellect and stamina. The more spirit you have the more mana you can regenerate from the 'Spirit Tap' talent. The more intelect you have the larger your mana pool. The more stamina you have the less squishy you are.
( i pressed ctrl+a and pressed delete, so i deleted the little guide i wrote and now its going to be a little bit smaller P )
Ok lets get started!
This is how you should choose your talents for best leveling purposes.
Talents, lvl 10-40(shadow tree)
http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?rZZxMLt0xRt
Now you have 'Spirit Tap' the best skill for leveling/grinding, with this you could kill mobs that are around your level range without even having downtime. ( that means no mana drinking, if you use this talent right you could grind mobs for hours not drinking mana)
side note When engaging an enemy always have the sheild up before you start attacking ( recast the sheild as soon as you ge the spiritbuff if possible)
And remember the wand is your friend, saves mana and does very nice damage, you should always check the action house for a better wand than your current, every few levels.
And now when you've reached 40, and have spent 31 points into the Shadow tree, its time to get some nice talents from the Discipline tree.
Talents, lvl 40-60(Discipline tree)
http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?rVMGshZZxMxt0xRt
(Notice that i've put the last point into Shadow Focus in the Shadow tree)
This specc is purely for Leveling, after you hit 60 i got some other speccs for you.
PvP spec(the facemelter)
http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?rxMGoZZEMMtctRt
This is mainly for pvp but if you get some nice gear you could be doing damage instead of healing in Instances )
PvE spec(the healer)
http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?dxgus00oZfxLcc0qL
This is the healer build, it can look like many things 31/20/0, 18/33/0 etc, mess around with it see what fits you )
Thats all for me, Hope this helps someone )

Addition from Darfuria:
Just a note - When levelling a Priest I always it's best to spend the first 5 points in Wand Specialisation. If you get a level 4 wand which does 25% more damage it's way more effective than spamming smite. This continues all the way up through the levels. Just make sure you get better wands. Good way of conserving mana, too.
Addition from Unbreakable_Mage:
I'll note the best way ( in what order to spend edit it D )( note , i have read this from the Official Forums )
10-14 5/5 Spirit Tap
15-16 Improved Shadow Word Pain 2/2
17-19 3/5 Shadow Focus
20 Mind Flay
21-25 5/5 Improved Mind Blast( note i don't think the 4th point in Shadow focus is necessary , neither imp Vampiric Embrace , Silence and Psychic Scream are better in my opinion )
26-27 2/2 Imp Psychic Scream
28-32 5/5 Shadow Weaving
33 Silence
34 Vampiric Embrace
35-39 5/5 Darkness
40 ShadowformDiscipline
41-45 Martyrdom OR Wand Specialization 5/5
46-48 3/3 Improved Power Word Shield
49-50 2/2 Improved Power Word FortitudeFrom here you are free , Inner Focus is always nice to have .
and Silent Resolve is a must have for PvE'ers .
