Warrior

A collection of guides for the Warrior class, written by the wow-pro community.

Hosho's Introductional Warrior Guide

Warrior is like any class in the game. Easy to play, but difficult to play well. A good warrior is a rare thing, but in my experience, the tank is the single most important role in turning a good run into a great run.

I have two warriors, a 60 tauren (who I haven't played since BC.) and a 62 night elf. I won't go into great detail, but here's some general advice.

Talents
For levelling, I have always used fury, simply because it is the best for grinding. Some prefer to level with arms, but fury is widely considered the "best" levelling spec. I recommend respeccing at 70 to something that better suits your endgame plans. (Arms for PvP, Fury for PvE DPS, or Prot for PvE Tanking.)

For levelling, I place my talents like this..
Example Fury build at level 50

Once that is done, I start placing point into Protection. The reason for this is that from 0-50, I don't do a great deal of instance runs. But from 50-60, and especially from 60-70, I do quite a lot. Also tanking is more difficult in 60-70 instances, and talent points in protection are helpful.

Same build at level 64

I finish off the build with more points in Fury.

Same build at 70

Then I respecc. Here are a few example builds to get you started. Mess around with them as you please.

Sample endgame PvE DPS build
Sample endgame PvP build (replace Poleaxe spec with whatever weapon you intend to use.)
Sample endgame PvE Tank build (What my warrior will use at 70.)

Soloing
Bring bandages, that's about all I can say. Playing a warrior is very aggressive. Your plan is always to kill them before they kill you, and that means you must have little or no regard for your own safety if you want to do it well. You can use Intimidating Shout to "stun" a target for a few seconds while you bandage, but other than that, 100% of your time should be spent dealing as much damage as possible.

Keep Battle Shout up at all times, and once you get to level 50, keep rampage up at all times. The increase in dps from that buff is astronomical. (Anyone else remember the bug with rampage on the PTR? Sticking out tongue)

The build I've recommended is for dual-weilding, so dual-weild with it! Any weapon will do, but ideally, a slow main hand and a quick offhand (ie: a dagger) works well. Try to keep your crit rating high with a fury build.

Instances
Basically, the most important thing to know about tanking is that it is a group effort. You cannot tank well if you have a mage throwing fireballs at one target while a rogue stabs away at another. Use raid target icons to show your group which target they are supposed to be attacking, then generate as much aggro on that target as you can. If your group are not dps'ing the correct target, your job is made twice as difficult, so make sure the others know what to do.

A tank has two jobs. 1, Mitigate damage. (mitigate means "to make less severe.") and 2, hold aggro. (Keep the mobs attacking you!)

Also, this seems obvious, but when tanking, 99% of your time should be spent in defensive stance, and 100% of your time should be spent wielding a shield. Without these two things, you're not a tank, you're just a walking hunk of metal. You might want to step out of defensive stance to charge a pack of mobs rather than using a gun to pull, or to cast Berserker Rage for fear immunity, but 99% of the time, you're in defensive stance.

Step 1 - The Pull.
Hit bloodrage, then pull with a bow or gun. You don't need a high gun/bow skill, it doesn't matter if you miss. You're just getting their attention. Once they get to you, you should have a little rage built up from bloodrage. Use this rage to cast Demoralizing Shout. This generates a little aggro on all the targets around you, and decreases the damage they deal to you. It also does no damage, and therefore will not break cc effects like sap or sheep. If you feel it is safe, you may also use Thunderclap to generate a little more aggro and mitigate a little more damage, but this ability is expensive, and can break cc, so be careful.

Pick up the mob that your group are attacking and start casting Sunder Armor on it. Once you have 3 stacks of sunder, you're relatively safe.

Step 2 - Tab!
Tab-tanking is a great way of holding aggro on small packs of mobs. (2-4 targets) All you do is cast Sunder Armor, hit Tab to target the next mob. Repeat the process until all the mobs around you have one sunder on them, then return to the main target of the group.

Do this, and not only will you have a head start on the dps'ers on the next target, but you're also working to keep aggro off the healer. Be aware that If you are not generating aggro on a mob that is attacking you, it will eventually run off to your healer. This means you need to hold a small amount of aggro on everything.

Step 3 - When things go wrong
Taunt is your friend. But if you don't treat it well, it might decide to bite you! Taunt works like this:

First of all, Taunt bumps you up to the top of a mob's aggro table. Then, it forces that mob to attack you (regardless of where you are on it's aggro table) for a short while. This means that if you are already on the top of a mob's aggro table, taunt will do nothing at all. Save it until you need it.

If a healer gets aggro, taunt the mob, generate a little more aggro on it for the sake of safety (one sunder should do) and then get back to what you were doing before.

Bosses
The techniques outlined above are enough to get you through trash mobs. But bosses are very different. Most DPS'ers in your group will be able to generate far more than your sunder can hold, and some bosses will hit you very hard indeed. Luckily, bosses rarely come in packs, so you'll only have one target to worry about. Eye

Shield Block is one of your most useful abilities. It is practically a guaranteed block of the next attack (next 2 attacks when talented) and even more importantly, it lights up your Revenge ability. Revenge becomes available immediately after an attack is blocked. It deals next to no damage, but generates a LOT of aggro. Here's a list of the abilities you will use most while tanking a boss.

Bloodrage (If your rage bar is getting too low, 0-10)
Demoralizing Shout (aggro and mitigation)
Sunder Armor x5 (Lots of aggro, weakens the target)
Shield Block (mitigates damage)
Revenge (generates aggro)
Heroic Strike (If your rage bar is getting too high, 80-90)

In general, it is best to use as many of these abilities as often as your rage bar will allow.

That's about all I have time to write for now. Sticking out tongue Hope it's useful.

Skumball's Arms Warrior Pre-Raid/ Naxx Gear Guide

Skumball's Arms Warrior Pre-Raid/ Naxx Gear Guide

So, you wanna go raiding do ya?
If you lack the gear or don't know where to start, then this guide will tell you what gear you can get and where to get it from.

Table of Contents:

Introduction

For all those Arms Warriors out there who are looking for a little help when it comes to gearing yourself ready for raiding then look no further! This list will tell you what you can use and also where to get it from. It gives a couple of different options for each slot also so that you can choose what you get depending on what you need. This guide is a pre-Naxx guide though it can also be used as a pre-Heroic guide some of these items can be obtained in Heroic instances before entering Naxx though if you can't get into Heroics yet don't worry, just select one of the other items from the list.

I would like to make it clear also that this list is compiled from doing research, not from experience. I play a Prot Warrior and that's the way he will be staying - even his dual spec will be another Prot spec, though orientated towards PvP. As a result, someone who has good experience playing an Arms Warrior may be able to offer more insights and help than I can. However I made this guide as there was no Arms Warrior Gear guide at all on the site - either a complete or a work-in-progress, and we needed one. This is the fruit of my labour.

I must also give credit and thanks to Gorgax from the WoW-EU Warrior forums for coming up with this list in the first place. I have put a few of my own thoughts into this guide also, but 100% of the credit for the origional gear-list must go to him. To view his origional list click here.

Gearing Up

Firstly, I want to make clear what you should be aiming for before you start in Naxx. You need to reach your Hit and Expertise cap, followed by maximising your Crit Chance. Here are the values:

Your Hit and Expertise are your priority number one, hit those targets before you even consider thinking about anything else. After that you can boost your Crit Chance.

With the gear list provided here, you will be able to manage these numbers without any problems. There are a number of options included for if you need to focus on a particular stat.

Gemming & Enchanting Your Gear

Putting Gems into your gear and Enchanting it is a further means to which you can improve it and hit those important stat targets.

Gemming

Regarding Gems and socket bonuses, you should only gem to get a socket bonus if the reward is greater than sticking a pure DPS gem in the socket or if you need to activate your Meta Gem. Eg: you have a Blue socket with a socket bonus of 6 Stamina, it would not be worth putting a 8 Strength 12 Stamina Gem in this socket because of the DPS you will miss out on by doing so.

You also need to make sure you hit your targets for Hit and Expertise, so prioritise these stats when gemming before anything else.

The table here shows the best gems you can put into their respective sockets, at this stage in your progression.

Socket Type Gem
Meta Chaotic Skyflare Diamond
Meta Relentless Earthsiege Diamond
Red Bold Scarlet Ruby
Red Fractured Scarlet Ruby
Yellow Rigid Autumn's Glow
Orange Etched Monarch Topaz
Orange Inscribed Monarch Topaz
Green Vivid Forest Emerald
Purple Sovereign Twilight Opal

Enchanting

You should enchant your gear as follows:
Choose the better if you can afford.

Cloak: Enchant Cloak: Major Agility
Enchant Cloak: Superior Agility

Chest:
Enchant Chest: Powerful Stats
Enchant Chest: Super Stats

Bracers:
Enchant Bracers: Greater Assault
Enchant Bracers: Striking

Gloves:
Enchant Gloves: Crusher
Enchant Gloves: Greater Assault

Boots:
Enchant Boots: Greater Assault
Enchant Boots: Icewalker

Weapon:
Enchant Weapon: Berserking
Enchant 2H Weapon: Massacre
Enchant 2H Weapon: Greater Savagery

Your Helm, Shoulder, Belt, and Leg enhancements come from other sources. Here are the ones that you should use:

Tsmith's Pre-Raid Gear Guide (Fury)

Introduction:

Below is a list of good pieces that can be easily obtained for fury warriors to use (I'm not familiar with arms but you might be able to use this gear for it, too... just only use 1 weapon). Items purchased with Emblems are not in the list below, those items are list underneath the following.

Non-Emblem Items:

Step 1: Blacksmithing

Start by finding a blacksmith and get the following items: Titanium Razorplate, TItanium Spikeguards, Battlelord's Plate Boots, Belt of the Titans, Spiked Titansteel Helm, Titansteel Destroyer.

Step 2: Jewelcrafting

Now find a jewelcrafter to make you the following items: Titanium Impact Choker, Titanium Impact Band, Figurine - Shadowsong Panther.

Step 3: Raise Wyrmest Accord Reputation

Raise your Wyrmrest Accord to Exalted, then buy Legplates of Bloody Reprisal.

Step 4: Raise Your Knights of the Ebon Blade Reputation

Raise your Knights of the Ebon Blade reputation to Revered. Note: To start raising your reputation do the quest chain starting with It's All Fun and Games. Once you reach Honored buy Runeblade of Demonstrable Power for your off-hand weapon. When you reach revered buy Arcanum of Torment and attach it to your helmet.

Step 5: Trial of the Champion

In regular Trial of the Champion you can obtain multiple good epics, these are great items because they do not require you to do it on heroic, so obtain the following items: Drape of the Undefeated (The Black Knight), Gauntlets of the Stouthearted Crusader (Eadric), Uruka's Band of Zeal (The Black Knight), Banner of Victory (Confessor).

Step 6: Raise Your Sons of Hodir Reputation

Raise your reputation with The Sons of Hodir to Exalted. At revered buy Spaulders of the Giant Lords, and at exalted buy Greater Inscription of the Axe, put it on your new shoulders.

Tsmith's Warrior Guide - Fury DPS (Talents And Tips)

Recommended AddOns: TomTom (Map/Coordinate AddOn), Gatherer (Keeps track of Veins, Herbs, Chests, etc location).

Recommended Races:

For Alliance players Human is the race I would recommend. The reason for this is the Mace and Sword Specialization, most races have racial abilities along the lines of magic resistances. An example is the Night Elves, their racial abilities are most useful in questing. Human's are good for tanking and DPS for warriors so if your doing Dual Talent Specialization you get an even bigger advantage choosing Human.

For Horde players I recommend Orc. The reason for this choice is the Axe Specialization, Blood Fury, and Hardiness. One of the best weapons Warriors can get is the two-hand axe from the Heroic Halls Of Lightning, this makes Axe Specialization one of the best racial weapon specialization abilities for warriors.

Things To Note When Leveling:

If you are using a leveling guide and fall behind DPS some dungeons to level up.

I recommend making your professions Mining and Blacksmithing. With warriors First Aid is a good profession for when you are questing because you will not have a healer with you.

Good DPS gear has strength and stamina with both of the close in number. Below in the green writing you want hit rating and critical strike rating.

For enchants you want hit rating and for gems you want strength. Do not worry about the socket bonus, don't go for crit rating just to get that extra 2 strength. Always put 2 strength gems in the sockets (red).

The best ability rotation at level 80 is to use Heroic Throw, Bloodthirst, and Whirlwind whenever they are available. If all three of those abilities are on cooldown then use Heroic Strike if there is one enemy, if there is multiple enemies use Cleave when the other abilities are on cooldown. Also, after you get the bloodsurge talent, use insert slam into the rotation whenever you have that buff. After slam continue where you left off.

Keep Battle Shout active at all times when in battle.

Level 1-70 Talents:

Note: The following build is the best possible for when you DPS in dungeons, it works good for questing but it could be better.

Talent Build At Level 70
Talent Build At Level 80

Armored To The Teeth 3/3
-Increases the amount of damage you deal

Cruelty 5/5
-Increases the amount of critical strikes you deal, increasing your DPS

Unbridled Wrath 5/5
-Increases the amount of rage you generate letting you use more abilities and increasing your DPS

Improved Cleave 3/3
-Increases your DPS

Dual Wield Specialization 5/5
-You should always be using dual wield so this raises your DPS

Precision 3/3
-If you hit the target more often you deal more DPS

Death Wish 1/1
-Since you aren't taking the damage taken increase won't affect you, just don't use this ability when you are being attacked

Improved Berserker Rage 2/2
-Increases the amount of rage you generate

Flurry 5/5
-With Cruelty you will get this more often and raise your DPS

Bloodthirst 1/1
-A great ability that you should always use on cooldown

Improved Whirlwind 2/2
-Whirlwind is a great ability that should be used on cooldown

Improved Berserker Stance 5/5
-Increasing the strength increases your DPS and reduces the chance you will be attacked by lowering threat

Bloodsurge 3/3
-Slam is a good ability but the cast bar sucks

Rampage 1/1
-ThIs buff is even better in instances because it affects your party/raid members, too

Intensify Rage 3/3
-Helps generate rage by decreasing cooldowns on Bloodrage and Berserker Rage

Unending Fury 5/5
-These are your 3 most useful abilities, this is a great talent

Titan's Grip 1/1
-With this ability you go from Warrior to Titan, you double your DPS because all your abilities are instant

Improved Heroic Strike 3/3 (ARMS)
-You don't use Heroic Strike as much as some other abilities but it is still a useful ability

Deflection 2/5 (ARMS)
-In instances it's basically useless but you can't do Rend at all in Berserker Stance

Iron Will 3/3 (ARMS)
-Again kind of useless but you can't use charge in Berserker chance and you shouldn't be changing stances or using defensive stance

Level 71-80 Talents:

Deflection 4/5
-Building up arms tree

Impale 2/2
-Increases DPS by adding on to Cruelty

Deep Wounds 3/3
-More DPS

Two-Handed Weapon Specialization 3/3
-Increases DPS like crazy by adding on to Titan's Grip

Best Glyphs:
Major Glyphs:

Glyph Of Cleaving
-Raise your DPS by attacking an extra target

Glyph Of Whirlwind
-Whirlwind is a great ability but doesn't have a small cooldown like Bloodthirst

Glyph Of Heroic Strike
-Helps your rage regeneration

Minor Glyphs:

Glyph Of Battle
-Saves some rage by increasing the duration of your shout

Glyph Of Bloodrage
-Don't go out and spend big bucks on this, it is hardly a bonus but it is better than the other minors

Glyph Of Enduring Victory
-Don't go out and spend big bucks on this, it is hardly an upgrade but it is better than the other minors

Tsmith's Warrior Guide - Tank (Talents and Tips)

Recommended AddOns: TomTom (Map/Coordinate AddOn), Gatherer (Keeps track of Veins, Herbs, Chests, etc location).

Recommended Races:

----Alliance

On Alliance Human is the best. The reason for choosing Human is that as a tank you need to be able to recover threat from enemies at all times before the DPS die, with the ability added in Wrath Of The Lich King/3.0 called "Every Man For Himself" you can remove all movement impairing effects to get to your DPS quickly. When using a human make your one-hand weapon (main-hand) a mace or sword.

----Horde

On Horde the Tauren is the best. The reason for choosing a tauren is that it is a great tanking help. The base health increase helps a lot for tanking, especially against enemies that deal a lot of damage. War Stomp is a great ability to stun all enemies in the area to keep your DPS from getting killed.

Things to Note When Leveling:

If you ever fall behind a guide in level (if your using a leveling guide) then tank some dungeons, by doing this you can get your level up and loot some powerful gear along the way.

Do not let your shield fall behind, if your shield is a low level then go to the AH and get a new one. You don't have to buy the most powerful, expensive shield that you can use, but get a shield that will hold back enough damage in dungeons/raids.

I recommend making your professions Mining and Blacksmithing. With warriors First Aid is a good profession for when you are questing because you will not have a healer with you.

When deciding on gear you want to look for Stamina, Armor, and Defense Rating. Normally, the best tank gear offers a bit of strength, but then double or triple the stamina compared to strength, and then Defense Rating and Block Value. Make sure you aren't using stuff with Spell Power, Intellect, etc.

Go for Stamina enchants, and Defense Rating buff. Note: The socket bonus isn't important, don't go for critical strike or something like that just to get that small socket bonus.

When you learn Devastate take Sunder Armor off your ActionBars and don't use it. They have the same rage cost and Devastate does what Sunder Armor does plus more.

Level 1-70 Talents:

Talent Build at 60
Talent Build at 70
Talent Build at 80

Shield Specialization 5/5
-Reduces damage taken and generates additional rage.

Anticipation 5/5
-Helps reduce your damage taken by causing less of the enemy's attacks to make contact with you.

Toughness 5/5
-Reduces damage taken by increasing your armor value.

Shield Mastery 2/2
-Increases the damage that your shield blocks, decreasing all damage taken.

Last Stand 1/1
-When tanking you can use this ability to make sure the fight is finished and your group/raid members stay alive. If you die after you can get ressurected, but if you die earlier your healer might go, too.

Puncture 3/3
-Sunder armor generates a lot of threat so using it a lot will help keep enemy's focus on you.

Concussion Blow 1/1
-Mostly for the stun, stunning one opponent then fighting a different one is useful for reducing the damaage you take.

Gag Order 2/2
-The silencing reduces your damage taken. Since Heroic Throw costs 0 rage and shield bash is already useful against casters it is just a free bonus.

Improved Revenge 2/2
-The stunning reduces your damage taken.

One-Handed Weapon Specialization 5/5
-If you are not using a one-hand weapon then you shouldn't be tanking, all tanks should use a weapon and shield (AKA Sword And Board).

Improved Defensive Stance 2/2
-Defensive Stance is what all tank warriors need, so lets make it even better.

Vigilance 1/1
-Very useful when tanking and a DPS character steals the aggro on an enemy.

Focused Rage 3/3
-The less rage you spend on offensive abilities the more you save for defensive abilities.

Vitality 3/3
-You want the stamina for tanking.

Devastate 1/1
-You should be using Sunder Armor a lot so this is a huge ability, it adds some damage and increases the threat you generate.

Warbringer 1/1
-Because you can use charge in combat and in defensive stance with this, you can use it to quickly get to DPS being attacked.

Critical Block 3/3
-Help reduce the amount of damage you take by increasing you shield block.

Sword And Board 3/3
-This talent buffs some of the most important tanking abilities.

Damage Shield 2/2
-Help generate some extra threat, and the better your gear, the better this ability.

Shockwave 1/1
-Shockwave can be used to stun enemies that are attacking your dps so they don't kill them before you get them to attack you again.

Improved Thunder Clap 3/3
-Helps generate threat and the slow effect will help keep the DPS who are being attacked from being killed.

Improved Spell Reflection 2/2
-There are spell casters in dungeons and raids and are normally more deadly than the melee enemies.

Deflection 5/5 (ARMS)
-The more parries you make the less damage you take. (That Rhymes)

Level 71-80 Talents:

Place your talents in the order below for best Protection leveling spec (Best spec for 80 tanking too once you hit 80).[=green]

Improved Charge 2/2 (ARMS)
-The more rage you have the better.

Iron Will 3/3 (ARMS)
-If you're stunned you can't do anything, so the shorter you're stunned the better. If you're stunned you can lose the threat to DPS.

Booming Voice 2/2 (FURY)
-The shouts can help you stay alive longer and kill your enemies faster.

Armored To The Teeth 3/3 (FURY)
-Great for tanking, that's why its last, it isn't any use in solo leveling.

Best Glyphs:

Major Glyphs:

[Glyph of Devastate]-Reagents
-Sunder Armor has a huge impact when tanking, double ftw Eye.

[Glyph of Resonating Power]-Reagents
-Thunder Clap is good in tanking and solo for when you are fighting multiple enemies or a player.

[Glyph of Barbaric Insults]-Reagents
-A secondary way to Taunt when tanking.

Minor Glyphs:

[Glyph of Charge]-Reagents
-Charge is a good way to enter any battle, less chance of them attacking you before you get close enough to use it (it has happened to me).

[Glyph of Battle]-Reagents
-Battle Shout is very useful when Tanking, Commanding Shout is not as good because if you are a good tank you should be the only one losing health so nobody else benefits from it.

[Glyph of Thunder Clap]-Reagents
-Again, good for multiple enemies (tanking has that) and PVP.
