Hunter Kiting Guide

This is a basic overview of how to kite as a hunter.

Before you start, you need to know how to do a few things:

1. Lure mobs to a trap. This isnt hard, but you need to be able to consistently lead a mob over your trap.

2. Jump shot: if you learned 1 thing from this guide, I would want you to learn this. It is a common technique, but I rarely see it used among non 60-70 hunters.
How it works:
1. Run away from the target (more on this later)
2. Hold down the right mouse button (camera control)
3. Jump
4. AS SOON AS YOU JUMP, move the camera (holding right mouse) 90-180 degrees, and fire an shot.
5. BEFORE LANDING, move the camera to its original position when you are running away.

So, the first thing you will need in kiting is an instant cast skill. Instant casts include Arcane, Concussive, and Scatter shot, and stings. Your auto-shot is NOT instant, and wont work for this.

Kiting Preparations:
1. Make sure you have a clear path. Set tracking to the common enemy in the area. (i.e. beasts in barrens).
2. Turn on Aspect of the Cheetah (if you have it)
3. DISABLE growl on your pet. if you plan to kite, its not necessary since you will hold aggro.
4. Ranged mobs are kitable, but cannot be kited in circles.

How to kite:
1. pull the mob from MAXIMUM range. i highly reccomend 3 points in Hawk Eye for the bonus 6 yds range.
2. Fire your opening shot (arcane, aimed, auto) and attack with your pet, then fire a serpent sting. as soon as the serpent sting goes off, turn to run.
3. Run away from the target. As soon as your skills are cooled, jump shot with arcane shot.
4. Rinse and repeat- reapply serpent sting as necessary, and keep using jumpshot with arcane.

How to kite against fast mobs/without aspect of the cheetah:
(i sometimes use aspect of the viper against high hp mobs so i can cast longer)
1. Start the same way as a normal kite.
2. As soon as the mob gets ~20 yards away, drop a frost trap (not freezing, it doesnt help for kiting). Entrapment isnt necessary.
3. As soon as the mob gets within 5-10 yards of the trap, (use left mouse to look behind you) jumpshot with concussive shot. This will keep the mob stuck in the frost trap longer, allowing you to get back to max range.
4. Repeat! if the shots miss/mob resists trap, use scattershot.
5. If that misses as well or you dont have it, disable aspect of the cheetah (if its not on already) then do an about face (like jumpshot without jump) and wing clip. make sure that the mob doesnt get to hit you in the back, or you can get dazed.
6. only do this ONCE. if it doesnt take the first time, feign death, then get far away and resume.

Notes: It helps to have a pet with dash, so they can keep the damage up.
Feign Death will divert the mobs attention to your pet, since it has been attacking. if it doesnt, prep a freezing trap, and tank 1-2 hits to ensure it catches the mob.

I hope this helps!

Good try, but in all

Submitted by Jame on Wed, 2009-04-01 12:55.

Good try, but in all honesty, the video doesn't have a great quality.

Your jump shooting method could be improved (many times you actually miss your jump shots) and it's not very clear what you're doing. No text explanation either.

Don't give up, try again Smiling

You know what would be great additions to this guide?

1. A video actually showing how to jump shoot.
2. Text formatting!

Very clear, thank you.
I levelled my BM hunter so fast and so easily, that i didn't get the most sofisticate tricks, and this helps a lot.

Kiting is an essential

Submitted by tobarstep on Mon, 2009-03-02 02:16.

Kiting is an essential hunter skill. Using this technique, a hunter can effectively serve as an offtank in some situations and it is very valuable for soloing elite mobs (many a hunter has solo'd Arrazius the Cruel back in the day).

In fact, way back in vanilla WoW there was an epic hunter quest at 60 where you had to employ this technique. I suppose that quest line still exists, but I haven't heard of anyone doing it since TBC came out.

edit: Just realized there is actually a guide on this very site for the hunter epic quest I mentioned. Good times.
