| Tsmith's Warrior Guide - Tank (Talents and Tips)
4 Average: 4 (1 vote) Recommended AddOns: TomTom (Map/Coordinate AddOn), Gatherer (Keeps track of Veins, Herbs, Chests, etc location). Recommended Races: ----Alliance On Alliance Human is the best. The reason for choosing Human is that as a tank you need to be able to recover threat from enemies at all times before the DPS die, with the ability added in Wrath Of The Lich King/3.0 called "Every Man For Himself" you can remove all movement impairing effects to get to your DPS quickly. When using a human make your one-hand weapon (main-hand) a mace or sword. ----Horde On Horde the Tauren is the best. The reason for choosing a tauren is that it is a great tanking help. The base health increase helps a lot for tanking, especially against enemies that deal a lot of damage. War Stomp is a great ability to stun all enemies in the area to keep your DPS from getting killed. Things to Note When Leveling: If you ever fall behind a guide in level (if your using a leveling guide) then tank some dungeons, by doing this you can get your level up and loot some powerful gear along the way. Do not let your shield fall behind, if your shield is a low level then go to the AH and get a new one. You don't have to buy the most powerful, expensive shield that you can use, but get a shield that will hold back enough damage in dungeons/raids. I recommend making your professions Mining and Blacksmithing. With warriors First Aid is a good profession for when you are questing because you will not have a healer with you. When deciding on gear you want to look for Stamina, Armor, and Defense Rating. Normally, the best tank gear offers a bit of strength, but then double or triple the stamina compared to strength, and then Defense Rating and Block Value. Make sure you aren't using stuff with Spell Power, Intellect, etc. Go for Stamina enchants, and Defense Rating buff. Note: The socket bonus isn't important, don't go for critical strike or something like that just to get that small socket bonus. When you learn Devastate take Sunder Armor off your ActionBars and don't use it. They have the same rage cost and Devastate does what Sunder Armor does plus more. Major Update
First off I want to say thank you for all the people who have left comments, after the big update (3.2.0) I went back to update this guide and started freaking out, I made this guide after the release of patch 3.0 but before you could buy Lich King and level up to 80. I have done a lot more tanking since then and this guide was still good but could be a lot better. So I touched up the guide in several areas.
The talent build has been completely redone, the glyphs are still the same, Draenei has been taken off the list of best races because you will have a healer, the reasoning for picking Tauren and Human has been changed to involve tanking more, the reason for a good shield has been changed to make more sense, falling behind while leveling has been redone, the gear choices have been changed, the enchants have been changed, what gems you want has been added, it is now clear when a talent is in the wrong tree.
I hope you all get good use out of this update and have fun tanking in the new instance, Trial Of The Champion.

Found this very good
Just wondering, what's the benefit of levelling prot over arms or fury? (Levelling a warrior for the first time)
Thanks
Arms or Fury are the most
Arms or Fury are the most common DPS builds for warriors. And those who choses Protection are building tanks. I took Prot to get to know my tank and learn his pro's and con's. At this point I'm outliving everything and have mediocre damage and total control over mobs in instances. There is just one class thats hard to team with, and thats another warrior. They tend to charge in and hope that i have my rage up to remove aggro from them hehe. Other than that it's easy. Our healer said that she just healed me twice in RFK and was mostly doing DPS herself (our paladin healed me since he was Holy)... and thats what i was trying to become... a tank... hard and invulnerable.
To level as Prot is timeconsuming but as mentioned... you will know your Tank alot better than those who respecc at level 80.
Would I advise people to go Prot?
Hmm, yes... if you got the time so sure. If not then go Arms.
Yours
Shang
It's abit time consuming to follow this guide...
but I love it.
I did a few changes in the Talent build to suit my likings more, because I want/aim to do some istances to level 80. And need some abilities like Vigilance earlier. I'm at level 32 with Hoofman at the moment, and equipped a heirloom sword so I don't have to change weapon every other level. Shields are most often gotten from Questrewards... or bought from AH if they lag behind. Warrior questchain at 30 gives decent armor that will probably last to plate level 40.
Glyphs are a pain at early levels, so I took Revenge glyph for instance... Couldn't get any better at the time. So please put up alterenated Glyph suggestions while levelling since some are to high level.
Yours...

New Update
With the new update it better fits people leveling by tanking versus questing because that is where Protection pays off the most. Hope you like the new build
Thank you for the update
Thank you for the update Tsmith. And Yes, I like it. And I noticed the changes in Talentbuild. This is more in my likings since people tend to want tanks in lower level instances too.
Cheers
Shang aka Hoofman
Not so sure about this
I leveled my warrior as protection from 70-80. In fact, I did it from 58-80 if you really want to get technical. I find a great many of the suggestions here to be less than efficient.
Leveling isn't really about instancing. Sure, the Northrend instances are great and I would suggest doing them on the way, but you don't need to worry about things like Safeguard (I haven't even spec'd into that at all even at 80). While leveling, spec for max damage. Point for point, puncture is one of our worst talents now, where before 3.0 it was mandatory. Devastate is one of our least used abilities now; I only use it to get Sword and Board to proc. With the glyph you'll get a full 5-stack after only 3 Devastates.
Your glyph and talent choices show a tendency to taunt. A lot. I don't know if you are just running with bad people or what, but I can't recall a time that I've needed that much taunt capability. I would heartily recommend the glyph of Revenge over Barbaric Insults. And glyph of blocking is pretty much required gear for any prot warrior. 10% more block value = more shield slam damage in addition to less damage taken. For minors I would recommend the glyph of bloodrage over the glyph of battle.
Just my 2 cents.
I just wanted to ask about
I just wanted to ask about several things..
Why would you get Safeguard for leveling? I can't see why, truthfully, even at level cap you would. To me, it seems like a waste of two talent points, seeing as the recent Intervene change reduced the target's threat on all current mobs in combat by 10%.
Your comment on Shield Mastery is incorrect; you mention about more blocks, but in fact it makes you block for more, not more often. Nor do you mention the buff to your nice little spell for saving your butt, Shield Block.
At a low level, I wouldn't recommend specializing into Puncture because of the fact that until level 50, you don't do any damage while applying sunders. I'm not sure whether it's more or less damage, but in my opinion, it would make it slower killing, if not just slightly.
Other than that, I would like to mention that a good minor glyph would be Glyph of Bloodrage, which would go well with you saying to spec into Imp. Bloodrage.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of my points, though.
Typo Alert!
Near the start, I saw a typing error where you spelled Draenei as Draeni.
You should clarify when you say
That's all I found, so far. Great guide, hopefully it will be even better!
Edit : I removed a part where i misread what you said,

My first thought looking
My first thought looking over this guide was a simple question.
Why?
Why level as protection? I have been a prot warrior as my main spec for all of TBC, and I love being an immovable object. It's a great feeling to know that you have 3 healers who's only concern is keeping you alive, and to know that the fate of the raid is in your hands, moreso than anyone else in the raid. But am I levelling as prot? Hell no. Why? Because Titan's Grip is down to -5% miss, and dealing 25k damage spread over 5 targets with one whirlwind is just too much to miss. Fury warriors have limited ability to heal themselves, although they do take a lot more damage than a protection warrior.. but things die faster, and at the end of the day, that's important to me: fast kills = fast quests = fast exp.
The one saving grace for levelling with a prot warrior is AoE, something that you didn't mention in the guide at all. Right now, my warrior can pull 10-15 talbuks by thunderclapping and running, then AoE them down with thunderclap and shockwave. It's a very fast way to farm hit food, I wager it is as fast as any other AoE class out there, and I suspect it's better. The best part is I can do it without eating or bandaging.
The second reason I can think of is the 70-80 5-man instances. Tanks are difficult to find in the 70-80 push, and with quest areas packed, many people will be instancing their way up. Personally I intend to stick my tanking gear on and rely on the various improvements blizzard made to offspec tanking, like giving everyone shield slam, making the +15% talent a passive ability in defensive stance for all warriors, etc. I don't see any need to be prot to instance when you lose so many of the fury benefits when you're alone.
And finally.. if I WAS going to spec prot.. I wouldn't do it this way. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LVZhbZVItrx0zidczsGo is the build I am using at the moment, it's a tanking guide and assumes plenty of rage. When soloing, if I use a revenge and a heroic strike glyph, I can essentially hold onto enough rage for revenge, shield slam, a devastate or two and a heroic strike every 5 seconds, which isn't incredible dps by any stretch. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LV0hZhxZVItrgbzidczsGo is close to what I'll be testing first at 80, I may adjust later on, probably removing imp. disarm since endgame bosses are immune and so on.
Still, each to their own.
I am getting very excited
I am getting very excited about leveling as prot but this talent build is just off in a couple of areas.
1. Why do you waste 2 points on safeguard? With the changes to threat mechanics, you should not have to worry about your dps pulling agro. Even if they do, you just charge after the mob with Warbringer and taunt them back. That is 2 wasted points.
2. Impoved Disarm? Come on. If you are leveling as prot spec, you should still stay in battle stance most of the time to increase your damage by 10% and allow overpower and disarm won't even be available.
3. Take those points and put them into Armored to the Teeth or cruelty. For leveling, you want to kill the bad guys as fast as possible and more AP and crit will definitely help that.
4. Do not take improved spell reflect for leveling either. It is a very situational talent at best and a 4% chance for a spell to miss is an extremely marginal buff. You should be reflecting the spells back at the enemies anyway.
5. Deflection is a VASTLY superior talent shield specialization. A maxed out deflection is 5% guaranteed 100% avoidance. Shield specialization is 5% more blocks. Blocks are not guaranteed avoidance. You still take damage, just not all of it. The extra rage generated is inconsequential.
6. Improved disciplines? Come on. Seriously? That has to be a mistake right? How can that possibly be included in a leveling build and not armored to the teeth or cruelty?

Re: I am getting very excited
Answer to every question:
1. Half the times your DPS do not listen and you end up with different people attacking different enemies. Taunt does have a cooldown as you know, so this is just a backup and makes your tanking more protective to other members.
2. Battle Stance? Most people are finding guilds for leveling in Northrend as a group, damage increase is not what you want and with warriors the decreased damage taken helps decrease the use of bandages.
3. Those two abilities are small boost, and even smaller if you do not place all the points in them. That is why they are the lowest in the Fury tree, its just a small boost.
4. This ability I have found is very useful in tanking if you know how to use it and have the talent on. With the cooldown you need to know appropriate timing, if you do this works great against spells such as blizzard, flamestrike, and other wide-range spells.
5. Yes, I am well aware of this and have been thinking of the best way to fit it in. I have looked over the talent tree several times and have a few ideas. Please be patient while I work on finding the best one.
6. This talent is one of the ones high up on choices to remove for deflection, again, please be patient I am working on it.
Thank you very much for the comment I've got it all covered.

Re: My First Thought Looking
Leveling as spec has one great advantage that helps leveling faster. Groups for instances are gonna take a Protection Warrior to tank way before they will take Fury Warriors for either DPS or Tank because tanking isn't good with fury and DPS is not a Warrior's job. Groups will be looking for a Protection spec, then a Holy Priest/Paladin to heal, and some spellcasters or hunters to do the DPS.
Yes, Fury is a faster leveling spec but if a Protection warrior gets into a decent amount of instancesthen they will level faster.
Also, if you become a Protection spec now then you just spend less money at 80 because you don't have to transfer over to Protection for tanking when leveling is over.

Nice comment, really.
First of all I'd like to say that your comment is great, I hope to see more comments like yours coming from the users
.
I agree with your points, but you have to understand that this is not a discussion about the best leveling spec or a general discussion about leveling as a warrior. It's a guide to use if you choose to level as Protection. It may seem a dumb choice compared to Fury, expecially with the new Titan's Grip. This is the same discussion about the Enhanchement Shaman's leveling guide.
Personally, I leveled as fury until 60 then respeced prot and did 60-70 only by doing instances or group-questing. It's slower than Fury, but I had loads of fun in dungeons and it is certainly a more entertaining way to play than dps-ing the mobs out.
Other than that, your prot spec is very good, I have the very same build on my Warrior and it works very good.
Have fun
best race
I also find that dwarfs make a good warrior due to the fact that stoneskin can make the difference between life and death and a good fight against a rouge. It negates all poisons and slowing effects that they place. I just wait for them to stack the slowing ability and poisons for the first couple attacks then pop it and whalla, im good as new with a rogue that no longer has a speedy advantage.

Re: Best Race
For these reasons (poison) and more, I have strongly encouraged First Aid in the beginning of my guide, if you learn all the Anti-Poisons then you have an easier solution (plus no 3 minute cooldown
).

Hello
Great guide, dutchback. Although I found something wrong with it. Tanking in PvP gear (having a warrior myself), I've found that it does not work too well. Most 5 mans will laugh at you for tanking in PvP gear. Although it does give a lot of stamina/strength/resilience, it lacks defense or block which is not a good idea. Great guide, even though!

Re: Hello
I am well aware of that and would just like to make one thing clear to all readers. The PVP gear is not recommended for tanking, I have placed it there as a good choice for starting out leveling in Northrend, if you are planning on leveling to 80 through instances only do not use it, use it for questing.
Thanks for the comment.

Very useful guide! I'll be
Very useful guide!
I'll be linking this to my friend who just hit 70 on his Warrior and wants to level through WotLK as a tank.
Your discussion of talents is very in depth, perhaps you could add what kinds of spell rotation are best for a Prot Warrior going solo?
I love the pictures

Re: Very useful guide! I'll be
Thank you for the tip. I will find the best place to locate the rotation but for now useful rotations are:
(Always use Revenge right when it becomes available unless the enemy is stunned, then wait for that to end then use it because Revenge has a stun chance if Improved Revenge is on.)
1 on 1 against creature: Demoralizing Shout, Devastate (until he has 5 Sunder Armor effects on him), Rend, Concussion Blow (if not done cooldown go Shockwave), then Devastate until the creature is dead.
Against a group of creatures: Same as 1 on 1, just pick a target and insert Thunder Clap after 5x Devastate.
PVP (If spellcaster use Shield Bash when they're casting their most threatening spell): Demoralizing Shout, Devastate (until he has 5 Sunder Armor effects on him), Concussion Blow or Shockwave, Rend, Disarm, the other stunning effect you didn't use, Devastate until dead.
Hope this helped until it goes into the guide.
In this post, you don't use..
You say you do not use revenge or shield slam in the rotations? That is in fact, MADNESS, sir. They're two of the biggest parts of protection, and do the most damage. (And yes, I do notice that you said to do it, but its not in the standard rotation you put up.)
Personally, I use the same rotation as I do when tanking. 5x devastate, then priority SS>REV>DEV, and I next to never leave a 1 vs 1 fight with 96% hp or less.

Good comment Btw Arkaen,
Good comment
Btw Arkaen, could you use a larger font size for your comment. For some reason yours is smaller than the usual and it makes it a little harder to read.
Yeah, I noticed.
That's why I got rid of the add-on that automatically did it. Didn't always feel like removing the size things, because I didn't think it was TOO small. Sorry for any problems it caused!
