Holy Priest Tanking

When playing a priest, many do not know of their tanking powers. With the spell, Shadow Word:Pain you can aggro a mob by using the DoT with the person in middle/boss. After aggroing a mob quickly throw up a Bubble Shield (Power Word:Shield) and a renew... This should take up little mana. Then get in the middle of the mob and use Holy Nova, which not only damages multiple targets, but heals a little bit of health each time you cast it. Make sure you have some mana potions (Unless you are a dual spec shadow priest you can use a mana healing ball/ what I like to call a bouncy ball) to recharge your mana if you run out of pots. After you are done killing the mob heal all you can before you drink, (the bouncy ball works good her to get a full health bar heal before drinking) With this method I saw a level 60 do a 3 pull SFK. Still Warriors can tank better, but if you are in need of leveling/money, I would use this method to get it quickly... Use regular AddOnns but reccomended ones are as followed:

Xpearl Unit Frames : To see percentages and to watch health carefully.
Floating Combat Text : To help you see what you are hitting and what is hitting on you.

Tips:
If you are running low on health or if your bubble sheild doesn't last long enough use Fortitude + normal buffs you use to keep you Stamina, health, and mana higher.
If you cannot heal fast enough quickly bubble if you can and bandage/lesser heal.
Also If you have mana chants on your armor that helps.

Most Important Things to Remember:
Always remember to pot up your mana(or bouncyball) Shadowform if possible, Keep Renew(or other HoT)up always if you can... If not pot up your mana fast cast lesser/flash heal and throw up a renew.

Thanks~
Wesley =)

What in the world is a "mana

Submitted by Teni on Fri, 2009-06-26 00:17.

What in the world is a "mana healing ball/what I like to call a bouncy ball"? Are you talking about a shadowfiend? I wish I had a mana gem like mages do, but I don't. This mana healing ball sounds pretty awesome, though. where can I get one?

And please clarify the part about being a dual spec shadow priest. In that case you want us to what, cast Vampiric Touch/Mind Blast in place of Shadow Word: Pain? We can't be in shadow if we're casting Holy Nova, so I'm not quite sure where this is going.

This guide is both badly

Submitted by the_nell_87 on Sun, 2009-06-14 21:34.

This guide is both badly titled, and the guide is simply wrong.
Firstly, your "tanking" strategy revolves around using Holy Nova. You did read the part of the tooltip where it says "these effects cause no threat"?
Sure, holy nova is fantastic for soloing lower level instances, but if there's anyone else in there with you, he's the tank. Priests cannot tank; and especially not holy ones.

Another tip would be to spellcheck your guides before posting them, and try and use proper grammar so people can read what you're trying to say without scratching their heads too much.

Boy-o-boy this was under-whelming. The only aspect of the game that a priest is meant to tank is in PvP. We have zero abilities that build aggro reliably since the changes to Mind Blast. In fact our biggest aggro building move occurred at the character creation screen.

After many hours of waiting in a graveyard to rez, you'll be blessed with PvP Gear. Once you obtain your gear, then you need to get your spec right, such as This Spec.

From here you'll need to keybind(among other things)

Renew
Penance
Power Word:Shield
Prayer of Mending
Mana Burn

Stack resilience and stamina, and you should be fine.

Not to sound harsh, but if this is your best attempt at communication the true "pwnage" is going to occur when you apply for a job that doesn't require you to wear a paper hat. - Doomplague

Here is a description of the

Here is a description of the tanking role in Wow:

Quote:
A tank is a character whose primary role is to absorb damage and prevent others from being attacked.

Now the description of a priest:

Quote:
The priest is the master of healing and preservation, restoring his wounded allies, shielding them in battle and even resurrecting his fallen comrades from death.

What gives you the idea that something that's not designed around taking damage, to be a tank? It's a fun idea, sure, but it just doesnt work out. I can see Priests have some 'tanking' potential ability's, but those are meant for either solo play, or the hit/AoE you get once in a while.

Fun idea. Doesn't work out.

It works if he's talking about soloing low level instances at a high level, or questing. Still, I agree that it may not warrant it's own guide. Perhaps combine this with the hunter one he made (which needs serious detail work, because hunter pet tanking IS actually somewhat viable for close to level cap stuff), or something.

Thanks for contributing!

Ok, check out this guide to improve the format of your guides, at the moment the formatting is non-existant.

The main things that could improve this guide are:

  1. Proper titles ([ b ] or [ u ])
  2. Links to WoWhead for spells ([ url=... ]Spell Name[ /url ])
  3. And if you want to make a list, use the [ list ] and [ * ] tags.

Secondly I am not sure whether the guides that you have posted are necessary. There is no point in posting a guide that is common sense. Also you have not said where this is valid, priests should never tank instances later in the game, but you might be able to get away with it in Deadmines. If you mean they can tank when questing, you would be correct as it is an integral part of soloing (taking a few hits when the mobs reaches you).

If this is your first guide thanks for contributing and I hope that you will continue to do so in the future. If you are looking for guides that need writing I would check out this page.

Edit: I am sorry if any of this comes across as harsh, it is not intended to be.
