Leveling guide annoyance - follow-up
Just as a thought about the grinding issue and possibly switching other quests... At the spot I was referring to, one of the quests to be turned in before dinging is "Ordanus". Now, once yo uturn that in, you get a quest to fetch treasure from a barrow near Stonetalon Peak, using a key you find there. Why not do this quest instead of grinding? Plus, there is the as-yet uncollected beak of Sharptalon, the third element in the Ashenvale Hunt.

I completely understand the
I completely understand the complaint. Let me put your mind at ease that this is really the only section of the guide where grinding is a big problem, at least from my experience. But it *is* a problem here. One main issue is that Blizzard changed the quest item drop rates from when Jame originally wrote these guides. Back in the day, there was a lot more built in grinding with lower quest item drop rates.
Jame has specifically mentioned that he planned to revamp this section, but unfortunately he's been away for quite some time with RL issues. And now, with Cataclysm on the horizon, I doubt revamping these old Azeroth guides will be his priority, since Blizzard is going to vastly improve and completely change old world questing in the new expansion. So revamping the guides now would only benefit readers for the few months before cataclysm came out, when instead he can make more Northrend guides or work on the site.
Anyway, thanks very much for the input. Perhaps we'll add the Talon Den quest (I think that's what it's called) as a suggestion in the addon.
Good luck questing!
EDIT: One other thing - if you like PvP, remember that you can go play in battlegrounds to grind this extra XP as well, sometimes this can be a nice break from questing. Instances are also an option, though finding a group is a real pain these days.
Leveling guide annoyance
To be quite honest, while I enjoy most of the guide, there is one aspect that I find extremely annoying: the prevalence of grinding.
For example, I am most of the way through lvl 27, having just collected the Satyr Horns. The next step says that I need to grind to 25,200, in order to ding when I get to Thunder Bluff so that I may train. However, havbing followed the guide exactly, I was only around 16,800 or so when I got my last Satyr horn.
Now... getting a mob at my level nets me around 180 xp. This means that, in order to do the listed grinding, I would need to kill 50 mobs.
Jame, you and your group do excellent work, but grinding 50 mobs is something that bores me to tears. Maybe the order of some quests could be re-evaluated, even if it does mean some flying around?
Horde Guide 31-41 -- Hillsbrad Foothills (34-34) Section
Minor correction: Soothing spices have been eliminated from the game as of patch 3.1, so the step to buy one while in Tarren Mill can be deleted.
Jame's Horde Guide - 21-30
(Hillsbrad Foothills - 22-24 section of the addon)
I tried to add this to the bug report, but it was acting a little wonky for me. Please move this/delete it if I'm off the mark here.
1) The first step in the guide is to make sure you're either level 22 or close to it. Think that's supposed to be level 21.
2) Grinding Session step - This step says to grind until 1450xp from level 22. But then the next step is to go train your level 22 abilities. Maybe change it to "grind until level 22?"
That's as far as I've gotten so far - everything else has matched up and haven't had any problems.
addition to guide suggestion
I just wanted to make a suggestion of adding something to [Boston's 20-30] Stonetalon Mountains (24-24) in the Alliance addon. Before or after "Retrieval for Mauren", I would recommend getting the flightpath at Stonetalon Peak (36,7)
http://www.wowinterface.com/d
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=7674
I think that's new. BTW Nice guide.
I found this over on
I found this over on WoWInteface.
I editted the Interface\Addons\TourGuide\Broker.lua file, commenting out line 72, like so:
-- WatchFrame_Update()
Addon started working again after i tried this.
3.2 "Fix"
I have gotten the addon to work in 3.2 by doing the following:
* Open the file AddOns\TourGuide\Broker.lua with a text editor
* Change the first line
local WatchFrame_Update = select(4, GetBuildInfo()) == 30100 and WatchFrame_Update or QuestWatch_Update
to
local WatchFrame_Update = select(4, GetBuildInfo()) == 30200 and WatchFrame_Update or QuestWatch_Update
Note that the only change is 30100 to 30200.
* Save the file
* Reload the interface( I did this by logging out and back in )
I haven't tested this much, but it seems to have solved the issue.
I hope this helps until Tour Guide is officially updated.

Patch 3.2 Discussion
Hi folks,
I've created a news post discussing the 3.2 patch and update information. Please direct all your questions there. I know it's frustrating, we'll get the addon working again as soon as we can.

Hi, i tried to download your addon and im having a little trouble. When i go to my addons on the actual game, the only two addons that show up are tom tom, and Wow tour guide allaince. As you can see, im missing the tourguide file and the lightheaded file. Please help,
Nijajin.
Some general errors?
Hi all this is my second post on Wow-pro. I am leveling a druid on my server (Always wanted one!) and am just reporting on a couple general things I have found in Boston's 10-20 and 21-30 guides respectively. I am level 24 in the Wetlands (22-23) section of his guide, and one general "issue" is that in general if quests have multiple parts, they are not recognized and I have to manually make sure part 2 or 3 are unchecked if I have the part 1 quest, etc. I don't know if these have been fixed and the next char I level I will tell you specifically where they are... but it's been almost every multi-part quest so far. Just a tad annoying.
Thanks so much for these guides and the addon Jame! I hope RL is going great for everyone here and hoping for more excellent guides from the masters here at wow-pro!

Well, you mentioned
Well, you mentioned Wetlands, is the quest in question Ormer's Revenge (Part 1 and 2)? I noticed that accepting part 1 for that automatically checks part 2 as well, but when part 1 was turned in Part 2 would become unchecked automatically and then pop up as the next step. So there's no actual need to manually uncheck part 2 as the addon will do it itself when the time is right. However, it is a little disorienting if you're looking ahead in the steps and see it's already complete, but the little box that says the next step will do its job anyway.

I admit I've never looked ahead when on one of these quests, so I'm just gonna assume this is the case, but man, Tour Guide is weird >_<

Haha, yeah. I was a little
Haha, yeah. I was a little worried when I got there because I assumed I would have to uncheck manually, but then [? Ormer's Revenge Part 1] turned to [! Ormer's Revenge Part 2] as it should, and the checkmark just cleared itself. I was actually a little panicked when I was going to turn in part 1 cause I thought "what if it's done this at other places too and made me miss quests?" but thanks to that little quirk, it all worked out.

Thanks for the detailed
Thanks for the detailed post, and for the testing work!
I have a question - do the parts that are auto-completing incorrectly say (part 2) or do they say (Part 2) - basically, is "Part" capitalized? If it's not, that's why it's not working correctly, TourGuide can't recognize it. If it is, then there is something else weird going on.
why is this not avalible on
why is this not avalible on curse??? would make my life soooo much easier

Community
Jame put this together to build a community. If players stopped coming here to get the mod, the ads would stop paying for his bandwidth and hosting and the community would disappear. I think manually installing one mod is a small price to pay for that community.
James
love it
started using the guides before they were an addon, now its just so easy!! What i was wondering was: Is there a addon version for dailys? Would be nice to do the lvl 80 dailys in a nice order, get em all done fast!
Not really possible in TourGuide
There are some dailies that change every day. TourGuide doesn't seem to have a way for guides to change dynamically. A guide could be made for all the static dailies but ones that can change wouldn't work.
I guess they could make 20 guides for the Argent Tournament stuff, and you would manually click on the one that applies to you. It would be tedious to do that and hard for you to see which guide you actually wanted.
Your best bet for dailies is to use a routing addon like Questhelper or Carbonite. Those two addons will calculate on the fly what the best path is for the quests you have.
Moderator
Actually this could work.
Actually this could work. For dailies that change, all you need to do is put a note tag telling where to pick up the daily. Then use |O| optional tags and add pick up steps for each possible daily. Put in the completion and turn in steps for each possible daily, continuing to use the |O| tag. Each step will only show up if you are on that quest. So it should work perfectly
EDIT: Note that you would have to manually click off one step, the accept step, but after that it should work just like the normal tour guide guides.
Some bugs
I'm leveling a new character using the guides and found a few bugs. So far I've submitted them to the bug tracker, but they don't seem to show up, so I'll just post this one here.
Just noticed I still had a Westfall quest that was supposed to be turned in ages ago.

6) Talk to Captain Grayson
* Turn in "The Coastal Menace"
-Die on purpose, and then resurrect at the Spirit Healer-
7) Talk to Gryan Stoutmantle
* Turn in "The People's Militia"
8 ) Talk to Thor
* Buy a flight to Redridge Mountains
The addon version
T The Coastal Menace |QID|104|
N Sell junk and repair |N|Close this step when you're done (57.68, 53.84) |
F Redridge Mountains |N|Fly to Lakeshire, Redridge (56.58, 52.66) |
Notice the missing step?
I only remember one of the bugs I already submitted but I'll post it here too, just to be sure.
[WoW-Pro | Boston's 20-30] Redridge Mountains (20-21)
N Rogue Poisons |N|Don't forget that rogue can now buy poisons from the shady dealer at level 20. You don't need to do any quest to unlock them now! They are a big help so don't forget them. Close this step when you're done. (80.2,70.1)| |C|Rogue|
That step puts a coordinate in Redridge, while it should be in Stormwind.
Overall I'm very happy with the work being done, makes leveling an alt a lot easier

I'm sorry about the bug
I'm sorry about the bug tracker, but there are some problems and I didn't find the time and more than that the desire to fix it =/
But thanks a lot for collecting the bugs and posting them here.
Some addon not working(correctly)?
since the release of 3.1 i no longer am able to see the green dots, used to show where u need to run to next. i have every needed addon enabled i think. to check could u tell me the name of the addon and wether or not this is a bug? ty

Couple of Suggestions
TomTom is the mod that puts the dots on the mini-map but it gets its coordinates from LightHeaded unless manually put in the guide. I would check both of those mods first.

Nasty Error for Horde Char
I have been using the guides (addon) on my Ally character just fine (mostly, except for some seeming gaps). But when I loaded up the Horde guides, and rolled a BE 'lock, I got this error..
"Interface\AddOns\TourGuide\Parser.lua:88: attempt to call field '?' (a nil value)"
Huh?
I've tried making sure all my other tourguide related addons are up to date, but it still happens..
Help?
I too am getting this error
I too am getting this error now all of a sudden. I have updated all the addons to the most current, and now I can't get anything to work. Tour Guide works when I turn of wow pro guides, but I want to use Jame's guides. Anybody know how to fix this or does wow pro just need updating?
Playing on different computers
Hi there,
Does the TourGuide add-on leave anything on the local computer to track progression?
Would like to be able to play light stuff on my laptop and group/instance stuff on my Desktop and still be able to use the Add on on both.
TIA.

The file you want is located
The file you want is located at:
World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\USERNAME\Server\Character\SavedVariables\TourGuide.lua
The World of Warcraft is located in different places depending on your operating system:
Alliance 30-40
The addon is quite good, superior to Zygor for what I've seen, but at least on Boston part (20-30) I noticed that on one point I'm told to take the ship to Stormwind, go quest in menethil then go back to SW, but I had a quest completed before going to menethil to deliver in SW. It was the http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=1078 (Retrieval for Mauren).
Also my human priest got to 31 today after finishign Boston Guide, James promised a revamp on the 31-40 any news when will that be done? Should I keep on leveling or wait?
Moderator
Jame's been pretty busy in
Jame's been pretty busy in RL lately, but I think his 31-41 guide isn't too far off. I guess it's really up to you
I don't know much about the Alliance side guides, but the one already written is probably good enough to use without much trouble if you don't want to wait.
Grizzly Hills
Hi! Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I noticed just a couple of misspellings on the Grizzly Hills guide.
For the quest "Uncovering the Tunnels", the note states to "Kill the dwarfve". Also the quest "The Runic Keystone" says to "Kill more drawves".
Addon install
Ok I printed out all the guides and went through the Fjord and Dragonblight. Brilliant. I fully intended to load the addon for Grizzly Hills before I started but I just motored on and am now a dozen or so quests in.
Is it going to be a pain to load the addon now or not?
Thanks for your guides, and if there is a way to contribute offline, can you let me know how.

You will have to tick some
You will have to tick some quests off manually in the addon, but as you followed the paper version of the guide it won't be a big problem. Just search for the quest you did last and tick the steps off until it.
Great will try it
Great will try it tonight!
Thanks
Any update on 52-60?
Is there any update on the 52-60 guide? I'm almost there and would like to have the TourGuide

He's talking about Horde,
He's talking about Horde, that section was not yet written. It has been completed now. There are a couple errors that need to be fixed, but in the meantime here it is:
Horde 51-60
This includes the updated guide file that will allow the guides to be seen in game, make sure to replace your old one.
Check the Works in Progress page for the cutting edge patches
Otherwise you'll have to wait for the big package releases.

This is excellent.
Well imho, I though Jame's addon was a godsend. I'm still in school and am limited to a few hours a day at best and gaining levels makes me feel like I achieved something. But grinding in WoW is epically slow. Jame's guide condensed everything into one concise guide. I always feel like I accomplish something with this guide. Quests, grinding you name it
.
A question I have is this? Isn't Jame's guide essentially better than the ones you have to pay for? For one, it's free, my friend's used the tourguide version for over a month now, and he's a hardcore gamer. Plays something like six hours a day. I told him about this website and he was just stunned. He gave it a crack and leveled to 40 over a period of just 4 weeks. His /played time was something like 7 to 8 days. This is something that the guides you have to pay for promise.
Kudos to Jame and black cat (who i'm assuming wrote the tour guide version) for making such an amazing and comprehensive guid to leveling. I hope this doesn't become pay to use anytime soon
. That would be a real shame.
This guide is truly one of wow-leveling best kept unintentional secret.

The guide will never become
The guide will never become pay to use, first of all because Jame is committed to it being free, second because paid addons are now illegal.

And I will be eternally thankful to Jame and other guide-writers around here for that.
I have a question, though: I didn't knew that paid addons (you mean also the .pdf guides?) are illlegal, since when they are forbidden?

Update
The news is here:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/policy/ui.html
This affects any guide writers that have added a (pay for) mod for their guides. As far as I know, the PDF stuff can still be sold, but don't quote me on that.
I actually just read about this not 5 minutes ago....LOL

And it doesn't really make
And it doesn't really make the same sence to pay for a leveling guide. There will be an idea with buying a GoldMaking Guide, because gold secrets is not gold secrets if all knows them
