The following guide is meant to help you level your Fishing trade skills from 1-450.

Fishing is a trade skill that I find is one of the easiest to raise. Time consuming, yes, but easy none the less.
By the end of this guide, expect to have caught roughly 3,000 fish give or take.
To start, simply visit a trainer in any of the cities (or one of the few outside), buy a pole and get to work!
You can level from 1 all the way to 450 in any fish-able water, meaning it is possible to stand in Orgrimar all day and fish the same pool. The only problem with that method is that after level 75, you only earn credit for the successful catch of actual fish and not the junk.
Another thing to note is that the higher your skill level, the more fish you will need to catch in order to obtain the next level in your skill. Usually 10 or more. A rough equation to figure this out would be;
(Current Skill Level-75)/25=X
X being equal to the number of successful catches needed
Back To The TopYou can learn fishing or train the next levels (Journeyman, Expert and Artisan) from the following trainers.
- Lumak: Found in Orgrimar at (69.7,29.5) in the Valley of Honor.
- Kah Mistrunner: Found in Thunderbluff at (56,47) on the Middle Rise.
- Armand Cromwell: Found in Undercity at (80.9,31.2) on the outer ring of the Magic Quarter.
- Drathen: Found in Silvermoon City at (76,69) in the Walk of Elders (right before the entrance to the Royal Exchange)
For those of you with lowbie's who want to start fishing sooner and don't feel like running from the start zone to a major city, you can visit the following trainers to get you new skill.
- Lau'Tiki: (53,81) Follow the beach west from Sen'Jin Village in Durotar.
- Uthan Stillwater: (44,60) Slightly South and West of Bloodhoof Village in Mulgore.
- Clyde Kellen: (67,51) Travel directly East from Brill
When you are ready to learn Grand Master fishing and cap off that skill limit, you can visit;
- Angelina Soren: (79,27) Howling Fjord down by the docks
- Fishy Ser'ji: (41,54) Borean Tundra on the bottom floor of Warsong Hold, opposite the cooking trainer (Look near the inn keeper)
- Marcia Chase: (52,63) Dalaran in the Eventide
You might think all you need is a fishing pole and some time to kill to start raising your fishing skills, but that is not entirely true. At least not if you want to speed the process up. To do that, you should look into some of the following gear to help maximize your time spent down by the water.
Either bought from vendors, rewarded through quests, or found randomly throughout the world, a fishing pool is the most basic, yet most important of tools.
- Fishing Pole: The basic Fishing Pole, purchased from any Fishing Supplies or Trade Supplies vendor in the world.
- Strong Fishing Pole: An upgraded rod, purchased from Fishing Supplies vendors, you need to be level 5 and have obtained at least level 10 in your fishing. Adds + 5 to your fishing.
- Darkwood Fishing Pole: Required level 15 to use and 50 in fishing, this pole is a rare drop you can get while, well, fishing of course! Adds +5 to your fishing.
- Big Iron Fishing Pole: Required level 25 to use and 100 in fishing. Another rare drop that can be farmed out of Desolace while opening Shellfish Traps. By all accounts, this is a rare drop, but if you can find one, it adds +20 to your fishing. It is also a "white" item and does not become soulbound if you use it. What does this mean? Enjoy it while you have it, and sell it on the AH for a nice profit when you are done. (Depending on server, this is an easy 7-10 gold without enhancements)
And there you have it, a list of your basic fishing poles. They get the job done and for the most part, are quite easy to obtain. Well maybe not the Darkwood or Big Iron poles, but you get the point.
For those of you who want something more, here are some Unique, Rare and Epic rods you can try to snag while you have some time to kill.
- Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole: A Unique pole that can be earned in Terrokar Forest by doing the quest Rather Be Fishin'. The quest requires you to bring 8 Pristine Shimmerscale Eels to Seth is Shattrath. Requires a minimum 225 fishing skill adds +20 to your fishing
- Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole: A Rare pole that can be earned by completing the quest Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme for Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh(58,60). You must be at least level 35 for this quest and need a fishing skill of 225 or better. To complete this quest, you must catch the following fish;
- Feralas Ahi (61,51) in Feralas
- Misty Reed Mahi Mahi which can be found all along the Eastern coast in the Swamp of Sorrows
- Sar'theris Striker (26,76) in Desolace
- Savage Coast Blue Sailfin (33,32) outside of the Grom'gol Base Camp or (26,67) just north of Booty Bay. Both in Stranglethorn Vale.
I also suggest clicking the quest link as there is a very useful travel guide in the comments section that maps out an optimal path for us Hordies to use. - Arcanite Fishing Pole: A Rare pole which is won by winning the Booty Bay fishing contest. For those of you who do not know or haven't looked on your calendars ever, it is hosted every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm server time. The pole requires a minimum fishing skill of 300 to use, and adds +40 to your fishing.
- Bone Fishing Pole: A Rare pole found inside Bag of Fishing Treasures, which are obtained by doing the daily quests from Marcia Chase: (52,63) in Dalaran. Requires a minimum fishing skill of 300 and adds +30 to your fishing.
- Jeweled Fishing Pole: A Rare pole found inside Bag of Fishing Treasures, which are obtained by doing the daily quests from Marcia Chase: (52,63) in Dalaran. Requires a minimum fishing skill of 300 and adds +30 to your fishing.
- Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole The only Epic pole in the game. With the required minimum skill of 300 and an exhalted reputation with The Kalu'ak, this baby sells for just over 128 gold and adds +30 to your fishing, as well as allows you to breathe underwater when equipped.
On top of your handy fishing pole, your going to want to snag a few lures from the fishing vendors. Especially when you are first starting out. Lures are items you can use on your pole to temporarily buff the pole itself, which in turn will increase your fishing skill for a short duration of time (usually ten minutes).
What is the bonus to this? You can start fishing in waters above your skill level! What more could you possibly want? Not to mention that it helps you catch more fish and less junk, which after obtaining a skill level of 75 is extremely important. Let's work our way through the list.
- Shiny Bauble: Your basic lure. Used at level 1 to increase you fishing skill by 25 for 10 minutes.
- Nightcrawlers: For use with a minimum fishing skill of 50, these will increase your fishing skill by 50 for 10 minutes.
- Bright Baubles: For use with a minimum fishing skill of 100, these will increase your fishing skill by 75 for 10 minutes.
- Aquadynamic Fish Attractor: For use with a minimum fishing skill of 100, these will increase your fishing skill by 100 for 10 minutes. The vendor only carries 1 or 2 of these at a time, so it might be a pain to find. One a brighter note, they can be crafted by an engineer with a skill level of 150 (and the recipe of course). To have one crafted, you need 2 Bronze Bars, 1 Nightcrawler and 1 Coarse Blasting Powder.
So you just learned fishing, what to do next? Well fish of course. Starting at level 1, find any pond of water and start fishing with your shiny new fishing pole equipped. I would recommend staying close to the Trainer when you first start and train Journeyman once you reach 50.
At level 75 (or 50 if you bought some Nightcrawlers) you can head out to the Barrens and fish just outside of WC (Wailing Caverns). Some people might suggest you head inside the caverns themselves, but I would advise you not do that. Heading inside the caverns would mean having to fight through numerous mobs before reaching the fishing hole, and having to fend them off once they respawn. While that doesn't seem like a big deal, it can be frustrating at best. Especially when you are kind of zoned out and not expecting to have to quick swap to your weapons before you wipe.
If you feel like it, you can simply fish these waters until you reach 300. It may be monotonous, but you will come out of it with stacks of Deviate Fish which sell rather well on the AH. If you are one of the lucky few who have the recipe for Savory Deviate Delight, you can cook up a few and make even more of a profit at auction.
Remember to visit your trainer at 75, 150 and 225 to further your skills along and not hit the limit cap. If you do that, then your just wasting your time out there in the waters.
Congratulations, you are ready to master the art of fishing. To begin, visit the Grand Master Fishing Trainer in the Howling Fjord, Borean Tundra or Dalaran and learn the next level in the skill.
Before heading out, first make sure that you at least have your Strong Fishing Pole and a stack of Bright Baubles. Of course I am only assuming you are leveling using vendor quality items only. If not, bring something else as this is only the basic setup you will need.
Head out along the coasts of the Howling Fjord and get to work. At first you are going to fish up alot of junk (just like when we first started) but as your skill goes up, the amount of junk collected will go down.
To catch all fish and no junk, you need a collective skill of 475 or better, so don't be too disappointed. When I say a collective skill, I mean your natural skill abilities, PLUS you buffs meaning the additional increase given by your pole, and the attachments of lures to your pole.
If your character is at level 80, I would recommend heading to Wintergrasp to fish instead of the Borean Tundra. The fishing will be the same as far as the fish to junk ratio is concerned, but the keepers sell better on the AH.
Don't forget to visit your trainer again at 375 to obtain the Grand Master skill.

I would actually suggest that, instead of fishing in the old world, you level fishing either in the Dalaran sewers until you get a Giant Rat pet, or in Northrend schools until you get the sea turtle mount. The chance is low, and fishing for Deviate Fish is still a good way to level as well, but for the collectors and achievement junkies out there (like myself) fishing in Dalaran/Northrend has its advantages. Alternatively you could fish in Highland Mix schools and try to get a Mr. Pinchy - I actually can attest to this, I got one while leveling fishing!

Thanks again for the help with the coding. Still re-teaching myself some of the HTML (I know its basic) and learning the BBCoding for the first time.
As far as the fishing in Dalaran, I myself have never done, though I plan on doing it with another character I am currently working on. Once i can come up with a more detailed bit on it as well as some coords for the guide, I ill be sure to add it to the tips sections.

In terms of telling people to fish on the coast of Borean Tundra or in Wintergrasp, I am wondering why. Wintergrasp I suppose makes sense. But unless you tell people to fish specifically in pools at Borean Tundra, I don't see any point and it seems they would be better served just sitting in the Dalaran sewers to fish.
If I were personally going to level up fishing again, I would only fish in the following places (in roughly this order):
Now this is all just my opinion, but at least tell us why we are leveling where you suggest. Still, it's a great guide, well formatting and lots of useful information!
Fishing Spots
The basis of this guide is ultimately for quick leveling of your character's fishing ability. The use of Borean Tundra was actually an error on my part. and one which I will be changing.
It was suppossed to state using Howling Fjord to begin your Northrend fishing. The reason being is that fishing down on the docks in Vengeance Landing keeps you close to the trainer and a source of supplies. Also, by fishing here while playing on a PvP server, you can lessen the worry of being ganked as you are technically within a Horde settlement.
Again, the basis of this guide was just for quick fishing with some minor tips. As far as achievements and prime fishing holes for those achievements, pets, etc. is currently being worked on. Once I have everything together and formatted, I will be adding it to this guide as an update. If you don't mind, I would love to use the info you provided so far

Hmm, that makes sense, though I still just don't understand why you wouldn't use the Dalaran sewers, since most people have their hearth in Dalaran it's much more convenient.
I still think you might want to mention the other locations, or perhaps provide a link to your other guide (once it is completed) so that the collectors can kill two birds with one stone and try and get their pets/mounts/achievements while they level.
Also, you might want to mention that it is possible to do the Dalaran fishing quest even when your fishing is low. I had a friend who completed it every day while he was leveling his fishing - it takes a bit longer but you do occasionally catch the quest fish, and you get rep, money, and sometimes other goodies from the quest. But this isn't too important
