GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK NEW GAME+ GUIDE AND LIST OF ITEMS

This short guide contains a full list of items you can find in God of War Ragnarok’s New Game+ as well as where to get them, and general guidelines to follow to complete New Game+ in an optimized way.

There will also be section for the Give Me God of War Difficulty on New Game+ where I’ll share the best builds and strategies for the hardest bosses.

To-do List Before New Game+

This is a list of things to do before you start New Game+ if you want to get the stronger possible character.

• Open all 35 Nornir Chests in the game. In New Game+, Nornir Chests give Yggdrasil’s Dews for a +2 Stat Permanent increase, but only if you’ve already looted all 35 Nornir Chests in your first playthrough, or else the NG+ Nornir Chests will give you the items you missed from your first playthrough. So if you want the highest possible stats on Kratos, that’s the way to do it.
• Open all Legendary Chests in the game. In New game+, Legendary Chests give you Crafting Materials to upgrade gear to LEVEL 10, and sometimes they also give you Primal Flames, which are needed to upgrade weapons up to LEVEL 10. Same thing as with Nornir Chests, if you didn’t loot a specific Legendary Chest in your first playthrough, you’ll get the item you missed in your NG+ playthrough, instead of the NG+ exclusive loots.
• Farm some hacksilver and some crafting materials from The Crucible Challenges before starting New Game+, you will need Smouldering Embers, Blazing Embers and Glowing Embers to upgrade your Weapon Attachments, Shield, Rond and Armour all the way up to LEVEL 10. Here’s the minimum you should farm if you want to be able to upgrade a full set of gear to LEVEL 10 before getting access to The Muspelheim Trials in NG+:
  • 20 Blazing Embers
  • 30 Glowing Embers
  • 40 Smouldering Embers

General New Game+ Guidelines

• Loot all the coffins (Red Chests) you can find, they contain new upgrade materials called Skap Slags, which you’ll need to upgrade armour past LEVEL 9.
• Also try to loot the hanging buckets, they also contain Skap Slags sometimes.
• While on the boat, grab the ressources from the Shimmering Waters for extra Skap Slags. Barrels only yield Hacksilver so it’s up to you if you want to go out of your way to grab those.
• While sledding in Midgard or Alfheim, smash Barrels for potential extra Skap Slags.
• Artefacts can be sold at the shop for extra Skap Slags as well, so you should pick them up.
• You should also kill the Ormrs you find on your way, they drop a few Skap Slags.
• Same thing goes for the Treasure Hunts, they also yield Skap Slags.
• At the end of this guide, you’ll end up with at least 15 000 Skap Slags to spare and a ton of other NG+ Crafting Materials which will be enough to upgrade every single piece of gear you own to the max.
• Don’t bother going out of your way to loot Wooden Chests and Pouches unless you’re short on hacksilver, which shouldn’t be the case if you followed my God of War Ragnarok 100% Walkthrough (you should have millions of Hacksilver from the Muspelheim Trials). However, there are new Labour Tiers from Ratatoskr, and loot Chests is one of them, so feel free to grab those on your way.
• Don’t bother looting all the Lore Pieces either, but you should still pick a few of them to complete the new Labour Tier if you’re a completionist. There is a meager 5 Skap Slags reward for completing these new Labour Tiers.
• When Crafting Level 9+ Armours or Attachments (Grips, Pommels, Ronds, Hinds) you’ll get “Gilded Coins“, which are materials needed to craft new Enchantments available at the Shop. My advice is to get 5 Gilded Coins ASAP and to Craft Nidavellir’s Finest Engraving and equip it. That way you’ll always have Health Burst when Stun Grabbing enemies, without having to equip Nidavellir’s Armor.
• Remember you can upgrade your Mod Tokens even further to increase their effectiveness, but it costs 10,000 XP per upgrade, so you won’t be able to upgrade all your Mod Tokens right away, but you will later on as you gain more XP through your New Game+ playthrough. In the meantime, you should start by upgrading the most useful Mod Tokens which you use all the time to kill enemies, such as:
  • Hyperion Grapple (Stun Mod+) – Quick Stun Grabs for quick kills even on the beefier enemies
    • Also equip the Hardened War Handles for a lot more Stun Damage on Hyperion Grapple.
  • Frozen Ascent (Element Mod+) – Quickly apply Frost Debuff for safer kills and switch to Blades for bonus fire damage.
  • Spear Throw (Stun Mod+)
  • Draupnir’s Wail (Stun Mod+)

These are just my recommendations for an easier killing of normal enemies. You can do as you like of course.

The goal is to go through enemies as fast as possible. I also recommend re-equipping Nidavellir’s Chest Piece to get HP back from all the Stun Grabs.

 

GMGoW Build for New Game+

At the start we’ll go with Nidavellir’s Chest Piece instead of Steinbjorn, because enemies don’t hit us hard enough to trigger Bloodthirsty Retaliation reliably, so instead we’ll go back to Nidavellir’s to get HP back from Stun Grabs.

Then we’ll transition to better gear once we reach a certain point.

STEP 1 – Until you reach Sindri’s House

If you still have some Skap Slags left:

This will net you 7 Gilded Coins

You should also buy all Armour Appearances for fashion purposes (unless you’re short on Hacksilver).

Go to enchantments and purchase:

• Nidavellir’s Finest Engraving (5 Gilded Coins)

• UPGRADE Leviathan Axe LEVEL 9+
• UPGRADE & EQUIP Rond of Fortification LEVEL 10

STEP 5 – Upgrade at Brok’s Shop in Freyr’s Camp

• UPGRADE Draupnir’s Spear LEVEL 9+
• UPGRADE Grip of Healing Harmony LEVEL 10
• UPGRADE Battle-Scarred Sauroter LEVEL 10
• UPGRADE Cloak of the Black Bear LEVEL 10

Now CRAFT 6 Wrist or Waist Armour Pieces up to LEVEL 9+ to get 6 Gilded Coins, which should bring your total to 12 Gilded Coins. You should have just enough Skap Slags to do all that if you looted every Red Chest, Artefact and Ormr up until now. If not, you should be close, so just carry on and you’ll be able to do this the next time you visit a shop.

• BUY ENCHANTMENT: Steinbjorn’s Engraving

Final NG+ Build – The tankiest build in God of War Ragnarok New Game+

• 650+ Defence
• -40% Damage Reduction thanks to Surtr’s Armr and Girdle bonus

Extreme Elusiveness:

• Enough Cooldown to use Emblem of Elusion (Enhanced Dodging)
• Even better Dodging thanks to Shadow Step (Cloak of the Black Bear perk)

Extreme Lifesteal:

• Nidavellir’s Finest Engraving for Health Bursts on all Stun Grabs (and we’ll get a lot of those)
• Steinbjorn’s Engraving (Bloodthirsty Retaliation followed by quick multihit Runic Attacks)

Extreme Stun:

• Svartalfheim’s Enchantment Bonus paired with our very high DEF
• Hyperion Grapple combined with Mod Token STUN+ and Hardened War Handles

Very HIGH DPS thanks to :

• Hilt of Tyrfing being useable all the time
• Niflheim’s Enchantment Set (based on our Defence) – And staying above 75% Health is no problem with this build
• Hardened War Handles make our Hyperion Grapple do insane damage on top of the massive Stun damage.

STEP 6 – Upgrade at Brok’s Shop in Freyr’s Camp after killing Nidhogg

• UPGRADE Blades of Chaos LEVEL 9++

Useless if your weapons are upgraded to LEVEL 9, which should be the case if you followed my GoW Ragnarok Platinum Guide. Can be sold at the shop for nice chunk of Hacksilver.

How to get: kill the first “Stalker” Boss during the main story.

3) Spartan Aspis

New Shield – Level 6 when first crafted

How to get: can be crafted as soon as you reach the first shop at Sindri’s House

 

4) Hind of Sparta / Grip of Sparta / Pommels of Sparta / Rond of Sparta

LEVEL 1 Attachments with no stats. Only equip them if you want to make a LEVEL 1 playthrough to increase your difficulty even further, if that’s your thing!

How to get: can be crafted as soon as you reach the first shop at Sindri’s House

 

5) Sparta Armor Set

• Sorrow of Sparta
• Scars of Sparta
• Woe of Sparta

LEVEL 1 Armor Set with no stats. Only equip them if you want to make a LEVEL 1 playthrough to increase your difficulty even further, if that’s your thing!

6) Ares Armor Set

• Cuirass of Ares
• Gauntlets of Ares
• War Belt of Ares

How to get: can be crafted as soon as you reach the first shop at Sindri’s House – Starting at LEVEL 7.

 

7) New Armour Appearances

Each cost 20 000 Hacksilver to craft, you can then change your appearance to any of those you’ve purchased, as long as the armor you currently have equipped is LEVEL 9 or higher.

8) New Enchantments

You need Gilded Coins to buy these, so you’ll need to craft many Level 9+ gear if you want to buy all the enchantments.

My advice is to craft just enough pieces to get the Gilded Coins you need to buy one or two of the new enchantments you’ll actually use on your NG+ playthrough. Then save the rest of your Skap Slags to upgrade the gear you’re actually using.

Later in your NG+ playthrough, you’ll acquire enough Skap Slags to craft all the Level 9+ pieces you want, and you’ll get enough Gilded Coins to buy all the new enchantments. But for now, focus on your build.

How to get: Defeat Svipdagar the Cold and Sisters of Illska. They’ll also be harder to kill than in your first playthrough, you can’t get a strong opening either because they all start with a protective shield, so you have to start with dodging until they lose the shields. Then try to kill the Sisters of Illska as fast as possible. Another tip: Freya’s arrows do a ton of damage if you use Nocked Proficiency, so you can focus on Dodging all 3 enemies and do damage with arrows safely.
