Tailoring Gold
By Domobb

Tailoring is a great profession. People don’t understand tailoring quite as well as they could. I thought it was a rubbish profession to use to make money. Although I have developed a great way to make gold with tailoring, and it involves using the auction house, but it is simple and free.

Addons:
Auctioneer

Requirements:
Tailoring from level 1-450.
Some items may require higher level tailoring to make so just stick to items that you can make.

These items you will want to make because they sell easily, and higher levels buy them for there alts to level up quicker.
Good sellers.
Simple kilt – may take from 20s-1g to make, sell higher price depending on price cost to make. (sell in bulk) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10047
Tuxedo pants – may take 1-3g to make, sell for 10-15g, these are great because they are rarer to the jacket. (sell 1-3 at a time) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10035
Enchanters cowl – Not to expensive, only make if thick spider’s silk is cheaper than 20s, sell 3-5g. (sell 1-2 at a time) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=4322
Soft-soled linen boots – takes around 1-2g to make, sell for 3-4g depending on price. (sell in bulk(6) ) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=4312
Dreamweave vest – this is an awesome item because it may take only 1-3g to make, and you can sell it for 20-40g. (sell 1 at a time) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10021
Dreamweave circlet – another great item just like the vest. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10041
Dreamweave gloves – another great item just like the circlet and vest. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10019
Spidersilk boots – these boots may only cost 1-5g to make, although 1 mat is very expensive, if you find it cheap can sell up to 40-60g http://www.wowhead.com/?item=4320

CLOTH, CLOTH, CLOTH!

Buy cloth, cloth is very valuable because it can be cheap, but the next day jump a load. The same as mining ores.
Always buy linen if it is 20s or lower a stack.
Always buy runecloth if it is 2g or less a stack.
Always buy mageweave if it is 1g or less a stack.
Always buy silk cloth it it is 50s-1g or less a stack.
Always buy Wool cloth if it is 50s or less a stack.

*NOTE*, if you notice shadow silk or thick spiders silk for less than 20s a piece, buy it, will help in making items.

Now you should be on your way with making money using tailoring. One more thing. If you wish to make more money, take the mining profession as your second and follow this mining guide: Mining 1-450

Good luck Tailoring your gold.

Excellent! I slapped thatExcellent! I slapped that message on pretty much all the old guides that hadn’t been updated after 4.0, just to make sure the author’s gave them a once-over 🙂 Thanks much for checking back in and giving it an update!

Minor updates made…I made the minor updates I though this guide needed. Most/all of the guide was perfectly fine for Cataclysm, as that was what this guide was intended for in the FIRST place. Heehee!!

Cataclysm Update NeededWe are recently working on improving the quality of content here on WoW-Pro.com, both by limiting low ranked guides and by moving out of date guides into archives. For more information, see the full news post detailing this process.

This guide is still relevant now, but could use an update for Cataclysm.

Lovely guide. I like theLovely guide. I like the way it is written, and the tips / ideas are good. I like that you don’t say what to get exactly (makes it more of a guide), setting it apart from from other guides, that try to say what to do exactly when money making is server dependent. 🙂

I agree getting an add-onI agree getting an add-on mod helps a LOT. I actually use Auctioneer to help me divide those full stacks into smaller ones and mark my unit price UP. This lets me take advantage of the people who are NOT using an auction house mod or are not paying attention to the unit price. A player like yourself would realize my “deals” are exactly the opposite and avoid them, but there are far more players out there who can’t, won’t or just don’t like to use mods. WoW on its OWN will show you what the unit price is, you don’t need a mod for that, but you’d be surprised at how many just don’t pay attention, or don’t CARE.

As for avoiding overpaying, I don’t… as a rule I mainly farm the items myself and don’t pay a cent unless the items is very rare. If i HAVE to buy I too will do as you do and buy the larger stack, reselling the surplus… marked up appropriately of course.

I’ve tried selling things in full stacks, but I’ve found my method to move goods faster, it keeps the average price from dropping, and it lets me make more gold than the rest of the crowd selling the same items. Besides it’s fun to see the screen fill up with yellow text saying my auctions have sold! When I post cloth on the AH even though my stacks are smaller, they all get bought up. This it not to say I post single items (except in certain cases like gems), but usually in stacks of five, or ten and I always limit how much I post. if I have ten full stacks (200 total pieces) I may only post two or three of those stacks (divided into stacks of 5 or 10 of course), only posting more once those have sold.

You’re right Jiy, I wasYou’re right Jiy, I was speaking as a buyer not a seller and selling is what this page is for. [I grovel to your superiority] 😀

In terms of buying in bulk –In terms of buying in bulk – I usually check bulk items (like enchanting dust). If there are several big stacks but few single or little stacks, I post little stacks. Conversely, if there are no full stacks, I’ll post a couple half stacks and a couple full stacks. For items like this, sometimes people need a lot and sometimes people only need a few. Check and see if one of these groups’ needs aren’t being met, and if they aren’t meet them – for your profit! 😀

Edging out the CompetitionSome of your tips on the Auction House are good, but I disagree with your example.

You should get an Auction House add-on (I like Auctioneer best, but there are others). Not only will they assist you in the process, they will stop you from overpaying people who try to use the sneaky trick you describe above.

One of the functions of Auctioneer will show you the percentage of the market price per unit. In your example above let’s say the market price is 18 silver for each piece of Runecloth. Auctioneer will have Sometoon’s stacks listed as 84% market price, while yours will be listed at 111% market price. Now which are you going to buy? In a situation like this, I will sometimes buy more of an item than I really need and sell back the surplus at a small per item markup (100% would be good for me and still undercut you). I don’t make a profit, but I have made my loss minimal and I didn’t buy overpriced goods.

The other thing is, I believe the AH lists items with the lowest buyout price first on the list. If 2 posts have the same buyout price, then it uses the bid price to decide which is first. In the above example, Sometoon has a 3g bid and a 3g buyout. If you simply post your stacks of 20 at 2g,99s bid and a 3g buyout, your product will be listed first and sell before his. Even if you didn’t make anymore money than he did, you got yours first and he could be waiting awhile or have to repost and lose his deposit. It doesn’t really matter, you win.

Finally, you say the method you recommend is best for items that people buy in bulk. Well if I’m looking for bulk, I’m buying stacks of 20. I hate when I go on the AH and I have to scroll over 30 posts of 1,2, or even 5 to get to the five stacks of 20 I want. I’m buying in bulk, that means I want the biggest stack you’ve got (at the best price), not 4 little stacks to make one (at an inflated price). For things like this I want the AH to be a warehouse store and not the neighborhood grocery store.

    THANKS!@Dicon:
Thanks for your great comments! There IS a part about purchasing a guild bank at the end of “Hyah! Git-Along, Mule!”. Sometimes that’s not affordable to people especially when you get beyond the first bank slot… But I have a guild bank on for my mule on my realm. I also like making my characters and banks appropriately named: I have “The Vault” and my Bank mule is named Brightpenny. Hehe!

    @Jhaessyn Jardeath:
Thanks so much! The whole point of the guide wasn’t to tell you WHAT to sell, but how to make the most out of whatever you are able to gather. Other guides might be useless if the item it tells you to sell is overfarmed on your realm. Or a patch or expansion comes out and now there’s a new item to farm… Though sometimes mats from lower level areas CAN bring in a big profit! I make most of my initial funds on selling COPPER ORE!

Just another gold making guide – I think not!I love the work you put into this. I like the idea of using a “mule” as opposed to an “alt”, and I like the writing style.

While you don’t get real specific on what to get and sell, and such… the premise you pose helps this guide be general enough to be of use, and to be useful as updates and expansions arise. A very good job! Thanks for taking the time to write it.

cheers for the GuideJust read through your guide and seen a few nice tips thank you very much 😀 personaly i do things a bit different and may help people with the char spots to spare, i use my “mule” as my gatherer a lvl77 hunter with skinning and mining post mat’s and vendor trash to my bank 32 priest (run LFD while doing banking to level up and gaining higher level professions) and my main who has JC and enchanting. Greens and ore get sent to the main and gems ench and mats get sent back to bank
one Tip is to get a guild on your bank as its cheeper to buy the first tab for 100G then to get the same amount of bag space (by approx 20G) and i find (although more expencive) you can orginize your mats in your bank easier
