Jiyambi’s Leatherworking Guide

This guide is designed to help you quickly and cheaply level your leatherworking. There are points in the leatherworking profession that can be quite frustrating to those who don’t know it in and out – this guide will help you prepare for these dry spells with the leather you need ahead of time. I do my best to avoid rare recipes (those found as drops or from out the way trainers) and recipes which require rare or expensive materials. We will occasionally use these recipes due to other constraints, but information on where to find the components will be included.

If you have acquired some extra materials and it would be cheaper for you to create items other than those listed, by all means do so. In addition, feel free to sub out the listed items for some you are making to wear, but remember to get extra leather if this makes you come up short. Any items that are especially important will be noted in the guide (such as those for specialization turn-ins).

For an excellent guide on leveling your skinning BC to Wrath, see the Skinning 300-450 guide.

Note: The numbers provided here are estimates only. You may need a little more leather than what is listed, or a little less. If you end up with extra leather, remember that in most cases you can change that leather into the next type (medium to heavy for example) to save you some cash or farming time later on.

Why Level Leatherworking?

Leatherworking provides some great advantages for leather and mail wearing classes. It is great for leveling up your character since you can very cheaply make item enhancements (armor kits), and can also craft upgrades in gear if you haven’t found them as you level. There are some item enhancements which you can only place on your own gear. There is also something to be said for being able to make your own armor kits rather than having to find someone to do it for you.

Choose a specialization

Now is the best time to chose your specialization, since you can make the items you need to specialize as you level up your skill.

You won’t be able to actually learn your speciallization until you make the required items in the next section (though Elemental leatherworkers can right away if they like, since they don’t need to make anything).

UpArrowGreen.gif Back to the top

Artisan

This section is divided into subsections for each specialization. Items that will be used for your specialization are marked in red.

If you would prefer not to specialize at this time, follow the instructions for Elemental Leatherworking but do not buy the elemental items on the shopping list (labeled in red)

Purchase Expert Leatherworking from a leatherworking trainer (requires level 35).

Purchase Pattern: Wicked Leather Gauntlets from Werg Thickblade in Tirisfal Glades (Horde) or Leonard Porter in the Western Plaguelands (Alliance).

Grand Master

Purchase Grand Master Leatherworking from the trainer in one of your faction’s main Northrend bases (requires level 60?).

Shopping List:

Expected Cost: Unknown (prices still fluctuating)

Level Craft Materials
350-375 Create 25 Borean Armor Kit 100 Borean Leather
375-390 Create 15 Arctic Gloves 150 Borean Leather
390-405 Create 155 Heavy Borean Leather (make it until it turns gray, you’ll need tons later) 930 Borean Leather
405-410 Create 5 Jormungar Leg Armor 25 Heavy Borean Leather
5 Jormungar Scales
410-415 Create 5 Fur Linings of your choice (Attack Power, Spell Power, Stamina) 5 Arctic Fur
415-420 Create 5 Pack of Endless Pockets or other bag 40 Heavy Borean Leather
420-425 Create 5 Eviscerator’s Bindings 40 Heavy Borean Leather
5 Eternal Air
425-430 Create 5 Eviscerator’s Guantlets 50 Heavy Borean Leather
5 Eternal Air

Leveling from 430 to 450 is much more difficult and costly. At this point it is probably best to craft specific items to sell, for friends, or for yourself, instead of purely to level up. You can level this with just recipes learned from your trainer, but you may want to purchase the epic recipes which cost Arctic Furs, for the purposes of making gear for yourself or others.

In addition, all recipes past this level require rare materials such as frozen orbs.

If you still simply want to level as cheaply as possible without farming rare materials, here is a suggestion:

  • Advertise in Trade Chat with the recipes you can do, and make things free with other’s mats. This will allow you to level up while costing you nothing, and if you have some of the blue items available at this leatherworking level, you should be able to find some people who want what you can make.

I hope you found this guide informative. In the future, more details on useful recipes may be added, or tips on making money with leatherworking.

I am also looking for feedback! Let me know if this guide worked well for you, or leave a comment with any suggestions for improvements or corrections.

    430-440Hi

great great guide, I’m around 430 leatherworking now, and honestly, I doubt I would have made it that easily without your guide !

though, i’ve got the impression there is an error in the 330 340 section : since the major 3.1.0 update, the Frosthide Leg Armor and Icescale Leg Armor require (unfortunately 🙁 ) an extra frozen orb, which, unless I missed something, doesn’t appear in the materials required.

apart from that, thanks a lot, very useful guide ! 😀

Nice guide – alternative 255-265Excellent guide; very well laid out & reads very well. I’m working through levelling a character using it, and I found an alternative around the 255 mark.

I was farming Rugged leather from the gorilla’s in Un’goro, but was getting more Thick than leather, so I decided to try my luck in Silithus. As soon as you get into Silithus, there is a vendor called Zannok Hidepiercer, who sells a recipe called Heavy Scorpid Bracers. The materials are 4 Rugged Leather & 4 Heavy Scorpid Scales.

The materials can be farmed north of the Cenarion enclave. Target the Scorpids only. I found the drop rate between Rugged Leather/Heavy Scorpid Scales to be about 50/50. After a couple of hours I had enough mats to make the bracers until they went green.

Now there definitely is aNow there definitely is a discrepancy. In the list of materials for Expert you have 75 Leather for the armor kits + 40 Leather for the Guardian Gloves, giving a total of 115 Heavy Leather, not 105 😉

However, the links for the Raptor Hide Belts/Harnesses say that they need 4 Heavy Leather each, giving another 100 Heavy Leather and a grand total of 215.

Master trainingI haven’t personally leveled a Leatherworker this high so I might be way off, but are you able to train Master rank (300-375) Leatherworking in Northrend as you are with some other professions? If so it might be worth mentioning, as if you’re below level 58 and want to do the Master training (for those people who try to get really ahead of the game), it’s far easier to hop on a boat to Howling Fjord or Borean Tundra and train there than to get a warp to Shattrath and make your way back to Hellfire’s first towns. (And if you’re 80, it’s probably as fast to fly there from Dalaran as it is to portal to Shattrath and fly out.) Of course, this is only speculation if the Leatherworking trainer there can in fact teach Master.

Thanks very much for theThanks very much for the raptor hide suggestion, I will check it out and probably add it on Monday when I have some more time 🙂

I may put a blurb at the top about why leatherworking is useful – it is basically as Jame said, there are bind on pickup recipes that can be quite good, or you can make money selling the items you make. They may add even more goodies in WotLK, to make this profession more attractive compared to, say, enchanting.

Thanks very much for theThanks very much for the suggestion, I was concerned that the armor kits would not level up every time after that point. Do you happen to know about how many you had to make to get to 320?

cheaperwhen you say 300-315 make knothide armour kit, it is cheaper to make 20 of those to get up to 320 instead uf making 10 of the wild drainish gloves and only make 5 of them

Really good guide otherwise thanks 🙂

If it’s like it was forIf it’s like it was for Outland, it will be very useful to level it. There will be bind on pickup recipes or recipes with Leatherworking Skill requirements, with superior stats.

For example I leveled Swordsmithing with my warrior last year when Outland came out and crafted my own weapons, which were of superior quality than what I could get from Karazhan and even the first bosses of SSC/TK.

So it was definitely nice to get a good epic weapon before I even started raiding.

    Nice guide.

    A suggestionNice guide.

A suggestion regarding the lower expert range (165-185):
Raptor Hide is very cheap (way cheaper than Heavy Leather) and easy to get, so I suggest making Raptor Hide Belt and/or Raptor Hide Harness to save the expensive Heavy Leather for other things.

Now, concerning leatherworking, what I really would like is a guide that tells me why the bother of leveling it is worth it.
