I’m back! And I’m going to make guides! Lots of guides!

(Or at least some, but lets not worry about that.)

As paper guides for a lot of the lower level regions are not yet made, I’ll take my time after dinging 85 and doing some end-game contet, to go through these low-level regions thoroughly and make guides for them. I intend to optimize the leveling routes, as I did ealier with my levels 1-20 guides for pre-Cataclysm. At the same time, I want to make the layout for my guides a whole lot better than before. I was younger at the time of writing other guides, and even though I knew how to level, I was not as experienced with formatting guides. Now, on the other hand, I have grown, and I wish to bring you the best I can produce. Therefore I ask for patience, as these guides will not be finished over-night, but by early January, I expect them all to be finished. Please keep in mind that I do also play WoW for other purposes than guide-writing, so I will focus primarily on keeping up to server progress in raids and HCs.

Anyway, upcoming guides are:

  • Dwarf starting zone (1-5)
  • Gnome starting zone (1-5)
  • Dun Morogh leveling guide (5-11)
  • Undead leveling guide (1-11)
  • Tauren leveling guide (1-11)
  • Orc starting zone (1-5)
  • Goblin leveling guide (5-11)

I might also make a quick pre-HC gearing guide for mages, as I’m gearing up a mage myself at the moment.

EDIT: Removed Durotar (5-11) from the list as Bitsem has already made a guide for this region.

    Optimism…
It made meOptimism…It made me believe I could get these guides out there fast. Well, I can’t.Made me think that the last week before the holidays would be easy in school. Well, it wasn’t.Made me imagine myself spending the holidays on writing all guides. Well, I’m not. Ok, so basically, I hoped getting a lot of these guides ready before Christmas, but as it turned out, fate wouldn’t spare me the time for it. I will try to work on them in the holiday, but I won’t stress it. It is Christmas after all! :)And also, these guides are not really THAT needed at the moment. I believe that there isn’t a lot of people who actually still use paper guides, so delaying the completion of them may not be the end of the world after all. I’ve just been too optimistic about what I can accomplish, and I apologize if this has given some false hopes, which I do not hope.

Manovan doing the 1-11 UndeadManovan doing the 1-11 Undead guide is just fine for me, or if he decides not to, it’s still okay.If there is a decent Night elf guide 5-11 in plain text, I’ll gladly use it. But I can’t seem to find it in the forums, so do you think you could perhops provide me with a link? ๐Ÿ™‚

UPDATE: I have rememberedUPDATE: I have remembered that Manovan was interested in the Undead 1-11. Now, I know he was working on it but I’m not sure if he’s gotten busy with RL stuff or not, but I’d recommend at least leaving that guide for a little later.Night elf 5-11 is also needed – there is a plain text version in the forums that you could convert to a full guide if you like.

To Be honest Maw, you’reTo Be honest Maw, you’re going to find it hard for most of the start zones to go a different route, as the quests are given to you in a very linear way now. As an example in Dun Morogh you are given these 3 quests from 2 npc’s standing next to each otherCulling the Wendigos, Forced to Watch from Afar, Pilfered Supplies which are all done in the same cave. After turning those in, the only 2 quests you can get are Pushing Forward and Operation Recombobulation, which again are both done in the same area as each other. The only other quest you might still be doing with these is Beer Basted Boar Ribs, if you haven’t already completed it by this point, as the items for that drop from boars all over the zone. The rest of the zone continues in a similar manner, groups of quests all done in same area, a link quest to take you to the next quest hub, rinse, repeat.Only zone I noticed that you could maybe move a block of quests was Mulgore as this only has 5 quest hubs, and you get the link to one about 1/2 through the quests from the main one (Bloodhoof). Dun Morogh, while having more hubs (7), only gives you the link quest to the next hub as the final quest of your current one.

Let me clarify something –Let me clarify something – while some of the low level guides are just “raw” recordings and aren’t really something to be basing other guides on, the recorder can do a LOT more than that and can produce fully complete, notated, arranged guides – it has advanced in-game editing features now. So simply because a guide was made using the recorder doesn’t mean it’s bare bones. That said – you should by no means take the order in the addon guides as the best possible order of questing. I would definitely suggest looking at that yourself. Please, if you find a better order, post a comment noting such on that addon guide’s page so we can update it in the addon too!In terms of using the recordings – using the source code CAN help you even if you don’t base your guide on it. It includes accurate coords for questgivers and usually has pretty accurate coords for quest completion steps too. It has item IDs and quest IDs, and sometimes useful notes as well. It has an initial order for you to work from. It is an easily arrangeable set of steps you can cut/paste/move around and use as an outline. All that said, you certainly don’t NEED to use the recordings, I just personally think they would be useful! :)As Cracker said, do what you want, whatever makes writing these guides easiest for you! Glad to see you back, hope you are also enjoying the new changes to the game!

Personally I would suggestPersonally I would suggest doing it however you want to do it.  That in the long run will be easier on you.  Since most likely the people using the paper guides will not be using the addon and vice-verse.

Re-reading myself, I realisedRe-reading myself, I realised that it sounded a bit arrogant. Iย amย notย implying that the addon-guides are of low quality, rather, I am merely asking if I should make guides based on them, or if I could just the same make guides from scratch. I haven’t been around for a time, so I’m not sure as to how things work at the moment. This is why I’m asking.

While writing these guides IWhile writing these guides I will most likely not care about the addon-guides and write them with circuits that I find to be the best, even if it should contrast with the adddon. I think that paper versions of guides should be the basis for the addon, not vice versa. And if I’m not mistaken, the current low-level guides in the addon are made with the guide recorder? This means that making more “real” guides from the ground up that are more comprehensive and include more explanations and details, should easily be able to replace some of the current ones when they are eventually put into addon format. Please tell me if I’m horribly mistaken, or otherwise correct me if you disagree. I wish to know how to go about when I start writing.

I will look closer into whatI will look closer into what levels the regions should be ended at later on when I more thoroughly go through them with alts. The above level ranges are only approximates. Nevertheless, thanks for the tips, and if you have other hints or ideas, please tell me about them. Any help is appriciated! ๐Ÿ™‚

If you do Dun Morogh, it’sIf you do Dun Morogh, it’s better to end it at level 12, as there are a couple of quests leading into Loch Modan that can’t be picked up otherwise.Basically the player needs to be within 1975xp of level 12 after turning in “Grimaxe’s Demise” so that with the follow ups and discovering Ironforge they ding 12. The grinding should they need any can’t be done in the airport area, as no mobs there give XP, so they currently have to get back to Gol’Bar Quarry. What I’m going to look at is to gain this XP earlier, so that it flows better and players don’t have to travel back. The Dark Iron Spys would probally be the best mobs for doing this grinding, before going to the Airfield, as you are already doing a quest on them and no mobs killed after this at the Airfield give XP.Once I’ve worked it out and added it to my addon code, I’ll post it to you.
