Site changes

Hi everyone!

Thank you for being so patient in the past few days, it took quite some time to update the site and address a few important issues but overall the following things were implemented and should now work:

    • Google Site Search
    • WYSIWYG editor for guides and comments
    • Chat
  • More Karma and Private Message functionality
  • An app bar (at the bottom) which will show you immediately who’s online as well as all active chats and system messages
  • A new theme
  • A second hamster was added to the server-wheel, so the site will run faster
  • Random bugs were fixed

Things that unfortunately don’t work yet and that couldn’t be ported into the new version:

  • The biggest thing that got lost with the upgrade unfortunatey is the guide categorization and sadly – as it looks – we won’t be able to restore it. Guides are usually “outlined” in guide books and everyone (from Trusted Member upwards) can help to reorganize guides and put them back together by “outlining” pages. Generally there always is a main page like “Leveling Guides”. Attached to it are all its child pages like “Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide” – which itself has child pages as well (all the chapters Jame wrote). It basically works like a big book with chapters and sub-chapters. All the main “books” with their sub-chapters and child pages will then be visible here: https://www.wow-pro.com/book
  • The display on profile pages is somwhat broken for now and all the content a user has contributed isn’t shown on their profile page anymore. We’re working on it though.
  • Stars and user roles/ranks will soon be visible below profile pictures again.

Features incoming in the next days  (feel free to add suggestions):

  • Facebook connect
  • Facebook like and fan page integration
  • Simplification of navigation (we’ll trim everything down to the primary links on top with a drop-down menu if possible)
  • Display of most popular content on the front page

Cheers,

Snowflake

AwesomeI really like the new theme and all the new features.  Love the WYSIWYG text editor, that's a huge improvement! To all our dear Trusted Members and above, we would greatly appreciate your help with the reorganization of the guide categories. So if you got some spare time, your help is much appreciated with that. ps: Snowflake rocks!

I’ve been checking mostI’ve been checking most dungeon/instance guides in WoWPro and I can help classify those. I see I can create a new “book”/section if needed, but I think it would be helpful if you admins/mods define the main (first parents) “books”.

          • img
            Nov 17, 2010 @ 4:39

Shadow CategoriesClass guides, leveling guides, guides in other languages. I think there were a few more. I think they are tied to the node at the top of those books – I know for a fact changing the node’s name does not get rid of them. I’m betting creating a new node, reassigning the sub-categories to the new node, and deleting the old one will get rid of them. Once we get the orphaned pages all in their new homes, I’ll work on this. It’s not critical at all, but I’m betting it will confuse the heck out of people who don’t know why those extra categories are there.

          Nov 17, 2010 @ 1:59

Rep guidesWhen I was moving rep guides, I didn’t see any sub categories. I just put them all in the Reputation Book.

So the WYSIWYG is awesome…So the WYSIWYG is awesome… BUT there’s a major problem with it. It removes ALL white space when loading in a comment or guide for editing. And some of that white space was not trivial, but was actual formatting white space. This completely ruins some comments and guides. I like it a lot but if that cannot be fixed, please allow us to disable it by default so it does not mangle our comments and guides. Not super urgent, but definitely something that will cause me a LOT of wasted time if it is not eventually fixed 🙁

    • img
      Nov 16, 2010 @ 2:37

I’ve found a temporary fixI've found a temporary fix for this.Go to "input format" and choose "Full HTML".Keeps the spaces and everything, as far as I can tell 🙂

      • img
        Nov 16, 2010 @ 2:52

Nope, does not work. Let meNope, does not work. Let me show you the comment I mean, and you can try to edit it and see what happens. Basically, the issue is not spaces, it’s newlines.

        https://www.wow-pro.com/wowpro_user_blogs/guide_declutter_purge#comment-32237

Also it seems that newlines entered into this editor don’t show up in comments.

Essentially, the editor is AWESOME for new users and people unfamiliar with using BBCode or HTML for formatting, but for power users such as myself… I don’t like having my hand held, I like to be able to do EXACTLY what I want to do with my formatting. If the editor didn’t mangle things when it loaded them, I wouldn’t have an issue with just hitting “Disable rich-text” – but as it is, an option to disable it on a per-user basis would be MOST welcome 🙂

Damn it. I tried to edit yourDamn it. I tried to edit your comment, and all I did was screw up the layout further. So sorry Ji :/Ok, you were right, there is a little problem with the WYSIWYG editor.

I see the problem but I’m notI see the problem but I’m not sure if there is actually a solution. Can you disable rich text and does it fix the issue? Will try to find an option to disable it on specific user roles.

      • img
        Nov 17, 2010 @ 3:57

Disabling rich textDisabling rich text definitely does not fix the issue. The mangling happens when the guide/comment is loaded into the editor. When you disable rich text, it remains mangled. It would need to not be loaded into the rich text editor in the first place to fix the problem.

          Nov 17, 2010 @ 4:44

I just took a peek at my WiPI just took a peek at my WiP guide after you mentioned this rich text thing and formatting. The formating looks alright in guide form (the only thing that got messed up was table widths, I’ve seen this in other guides though, and not a huge deal), but when I go to edit…*SCREAM!!!*Oh god, wall of massive text. Everything got fused together almost onto one single line. What a nightmare, makes me feel like crying. That’s gonna take a while to unravel…

          • img
            Nov 17, 2010 @ 11:11

A possible solution that hasA possible solution that has worked for EVERY guide I've messed with, even the really complex ones – copy paste everything from the actual view into the rich text editor. BUT – No idea what that will do to your actual code. You'd be completely locked in to using the editor after that, though theoretically you can roll it back with the revisions tab. I would test on something other than your huge pally guide though. Basically Snowflake, at this point the editor is preventing people from even being able to work on their guides. I would honestly suggest removing it until a fix for this problem has been found.

Small thing for someday?Just a small suggestion. Would it be possible to make our oun “library” of screenshots? User shots that we could use for guides? I think in the end it would save time for a lot of users and encourage more guide writing participation. Back to Ashenvale for me! 🙂

    • img
      Nov 16, 2010 @ 22:18

Good ideaIs definitely implementable. But how often are screenshots reused?

      • img
        Nov 17, 2010 @ 1:23

TrueI guess once the Cata guides are finished, they really wouldn’t be reused that often. That’s what made me think of it in the first  place. lol.

WorkflowDid we lose the workflow settings in the upgrade? I can no longer see anywhere to set a guide as “Finished”, “Work-in-Progress”, or “Abandoned”. Yes the same things can be accomplished with the “Publishing options” secontion of the guide editing page, BUT – the workflow stuff was more intuitive for users, I think. Any chance of seeing those return at some point?

      Nov 16, 2010 @ 22:17

It’s true that it was moreIt’s true that it was more intuitive. It’s just that Workflow changed a bit with this Drupal version and the old module isn’t used anymore. Will see if I can accomplish the same with the new feature 🙂

Hey Snowflake! Sorry to bugHey Snowflake! Sorry to bug you again, but I still seem unable to view other people’s Karma transactions. When I click “view” from someone else’s user page, it brings me to my own Karma page instead. So I can’t look back and see what I’ve awarded karma for and what I still need to do.

I know, wrote about thatI know, wrote about that though a few days ago – unfortunately there isn’t an easy solution for this. For now please just add the Karma you think is missing and as soon as we can see other people’s Karma pages again (I can’t either btw) then we can substract stuff that’s been awarded twice.

About the roles issue: I haven’t changed any permissions here. You can’t see the different checkboxes in user profiles anymore?

WoW-Pro Category UpdateIn the coming days we will be working to re-categorize the guides here on WoW-Pro, as the Shattering has thrown more than just Azeroth into chaos. Many guides now belong in the archive, their content no longer part of Azeroth. Examples include:
    [list]
[*]Old 1-60 leveling guides (Blood Elf and Draenei guides are still applicable though!)
[*]Removed World Bosses (nightmare dragons, etc.)
[*]Removed quest chains (Scepter of Shifting Sands)
    [*]Removed items
    [*]Removed Raids (Zul’Gurub)
    [*]Removed Achievements
    [/list]

WoW-Pro members of trusted rank or higher should be able to help re-organize these guides. Simply click the “Outline” tab at the top of a guide to change it’s category. We’d really love some assistance in moving these guides to their correct locations. Thanks!

Concerning the rich-textConcerning the rich-text formatter, one problem I have noticed is that it does not read pressing the “enter” or “return” keys as a line break, but rather as a space. For example this sentence was entered as a separate paragraph in the rich text editor, but shows up as simply another paragraph in the preview.   This one was about 4 line breaks down, but appears as 4 spaces.

Well, I still can’t find theWell, I still can’t find the place in the profile to disable it by default, if that’s still an intended feature.

That said, the new editor is, IMO, MUCH better than the other one.

It also doesn’t seem to load on guides where I don’t want it to (guides where I didn’t use it before) so as far as I’m concerned, I’m satisfied with it! Thanks a ton Snowflake!

As a temporary solutionBefore you go to edit, highlight all the code then copy it. That way when you disable rich text, you can highlight it all and paste over it so it will be formatted right.

Doh, that was my mistake, IDoh, that was my mistake, I wasn’t clear enough, sorry. What I meant when highlighting and copying, is before you switch to editing. So you would have to highlight it on the view page.

Layout error or…?Is the newest layout change (all boxes on the right, content on the left) intended? I’m not really a fan of it, it seems rather unbalanced to me. Also there seems to be a lot more green around than there was at the top and the bottom borders of the page, though I don’t really have a big issue with this.EDIT: I thin this is mostly me just getting used to the new layout, so don’t read too much into it 😛 I do feel it might feel less weird with only one column of boxes on the right rather than two. But again, that’s just an opinion, it’s all just a matter of opinion at this point 😉

Tiny, Low priority requestI thought of this while chatting with Jame about the Top Contributors box. Since moderators/administrators stop gaining karma, our totals in that box are kinda going to stagnate. I’m wondering if maybe we want to not show mods and admins in that box? Dunno if that’s even possible or something people want to do.Also, is the “Testing” account needed anymore or can we delete it so it’s not hogging the top contributor slot? 😉

“Mark Comment as Read” Option?Sorry to ressurect thread, been busy with school stuff, and saw sooooo many unread messages to look over when browsing, trying to catch up. =)I’m curious, are there “Mark comment as read” and “Mark all as read” options? For both content and forums?I can’t seem to find any such options. Also, there seems to be a thread in the forum that’s buggy. I can’t read it, as the link points to “https://wow-pro.com/http%3A/%252Fwww.filefront.com/17581398/45_48_Crackerhead22_Badlands.lua/” which won’t work, and so it keeps registering as a new thread in the forum even though there’s no new thread (it’s also what brought up the question of such options). Specifically, the thread is in the second page of the cata guide writing subforum, “Addon – Badlands (Alliance)” by Crackerhead. It’s not really bothersome, just an odd bug. Also, chat page has a spam comment you guys missed during your spam purge some time ago (and why are there -two- addon questions chat rooms?).
