The Care and Training of Venomhide Ravasaurs

Jiyambi's picture

The Venomhide Ravasaur was introduced in patch 3.2 as the Horde counterpart to the Winterspring Frostsaber. However, it's significantly easier to get this sexy black raptor than it is to get the cat. This guide will walk you through the steps of acquiring, caring for, and eventually riding, your very own Venomhide Ravasaur.

What is Required

In the process of obtaining and training your Venomhide Ravasaur, you will need to:

  1. Complete [53] Toxic Tolerance, in which you allow yourself to be poisoned 20 times by attacking venomhide ravasaurs.
  2. Complete [53] Venomhide Eggs, in which you acquire some venomhide raptor eggs.
  3. Accept [53] They Grow Up So Fast. You will be given a baby ravasaur to care for.
  4. Take care of the ravasaur for twenty days. It will offer you a daily quest, one each day. When you complete the quest, the baby will loose a tooth. Twenty teeth lost means the baby has grown up.
  5. Gather 20 Rugged Leather, 20 Runecloth, and 80 gold.
  6. Turn in [53] They Grow Up So Fast, and receive the mount!

This is just a quick overview. Any detailed questions you might have will be answered below.

Optional: While in the Un'Goro area, keep your eye out for the Ravasaur Matriarch. She spawns and roams around the ravasaur area in the south-east part of the zone. She is a rare spawn who drops the Ravasaur Hatchling 100% of the time. You can keep the pet, or sell it to make a profit (it is currently going for around 3000 gold on my server but the price will likely drop since it's actually a fairly easy pet to farm).

Starting Quests

This section will take you through the opening quests. Once you complete these quests, you will have access to the daily quests which actually advance your raptor in growth.

What to bring: To get poisoned by the ravasaurs (which is required to advance through this section), you must attack them. This is best done unarmed and without any gear that grants attack power. As a caster druid, I continued to wear my caster gear so that my hit points were never remotely dented by the ravasaurs, but doing this quest naked is probably a completely viable option. Alternatively, a fast attack speed weapon with low damage would also be a good choice. Plan ahead and bring whatever gear you want.

  1. Starting in Dalaran, take the portal in Rhonin's room (the western building) to the Caverns of Time. Ride south-east across the zone to the path leading down to Un'Goro. Head a little north to the area marked on the map. Here you'll find Mor'vek, the Ravasaur Trainer.

  2. Pick up the quest [53] Toxic Tolerance from Mor'vek. Note that this is a low level quest and won't show until you talk to him, unless you are tracking low level quests.

  3. Put on whatever gear you brought to get poisoned in (or take off your normal gear) - just make sure you have as little attack power as possible. Head to the area marked on the map and find Venomhide Ravasaurs (they are the black ones). Keep attacking them until you are poisoned 20 times.

  4. Put back on your normal gear and head back to Mor'vek. Turn in [53] Toxic Tolerance and pick up [53] Venomhide Eggs.

  5. Head to the area marked on the map and look for Venomhide Ravasaur Eggs. Pick up 4 of them.

  6. Return to Mor'vek and turn in [53] Venomhide Eggs. Pick up [53] They Grow Up So Fast.

You are now ready to begin the 20 day process of training your baby raptor to be a fierce mount!

Daily Quests

Each day, you'll want to head down to southern Kalimdor and complete one of these dailies. I suggest making use of the portal in Dalaran to go directly to the Caverns of Time. Once you get into Tanaris, call your hatchling right away, since some of the quests are located there.

As you perform the daily quests, keep in mind that you will need 20 Rugged Leather and 20 Runecloth at the end of the 20 days. The leather can be skinned from dinosaurs in Un'Goro and the cloth can be found on humanoid mobs in Silithus.

Each day, your hatchling will offer one of the following quests:

Hungry, Hungry Hatchling - Un'Goro

Kill dinosaurs anywhere in Un'Goro. The area marked on the map has a large concentration of them, but they can be found over most of Un'Goro. When you get some of their Fresh Dinosaur Meat, put it on your action bar. Summon your hatchling and click the meat to feed him as you go (this will help you keep track of how many more you need). Remember to skin the dinosaurs for Rugged Leather if you are a skinner.

Poached, Scrambled, Or Raw? - Tanaris

Search the area marked on the map for Silithid Eggs - they will be lying around on the ground. Here I suggest to search the eggs on the eastern side of that area, plenty of eggs on the edge just where the desert "begins" after the terrain goes uphill (thanks Benhir for the tip!). When you get one, put it on your action bar so you can feed your hatchling as you go (he'll need to be summoned).

Gorishi Grub - Un'Goro

Kill Silithid in southern Un'Goro, marked on the map. When you get some of their Silithid Meat, put it on your action bar. Summon your hatchling and click the meat to feed him as you go (this will help you keep track of how many more you need).

Searing Roc Feathers - Tanaris

Head to one of the areas marked on the map and kill rocs there for their Searing Roc Plumage. When you have gathered five of them, summon your hatchling and turn them in.

Remember that on the 20th day, you should bring the items for the final turn-in with you for your daily quest. As soon as the raptor looses it's last tooth, you can head to Un'Goro!

Final Turn-In

On the last day of your daily quest, make sure you have:

  • 19 Venomhide Baby Teeth (you'll get the last one from your daily)
  • 20 Rugged Leather (skin from dinosaurs or purchase on the AH)
  • 20 Runecloth (get from humanoids in Silithus or purchase on the AH)
  • 80 Gold
  • Your baby raptor!

Note that if you forget anything for your last turn-in, there is a bank and an auction house conveniently located in Gadgetzan.

When you've completed your last daily quest, head back to Mor'vek in Un'Goro (see map at the top of the guide). Talk to him to receive your awesome new mount, and congratulations!

Done all the 4 daily quests.

So, I finally managed to do the 4 daily quests at least one time. And the way they are described in the guide is perfect, nothing to add Sticking out tongue
If you are bind to the sewers of Dalaran you're fine because as you exit the underground you have to turn right and you already have the stairs the lead you to the CoT portal... quick Laughing out loud

*facepalm* I forgot, it would be good to note that the Ravasaur Matriarch spawns in the ravasaur area, and she drops a pet which you can keep or sell for a decent profit (goes for around 3k on my server). I'll add a note.

Day 1 - Completed.

So, finally I did day one of this quest line.

This guide made questing easier than ever Smiling About 30 minutes to do the first 2 pre-quests and the daily, included the time to take the portal to CoT and heading to Un'Goro. Anyway, I have a suggestion for rogues: try to aggro 2 Venomhide Ravasaurs per time, then pull up blade flurry (of course disarmed) and then you'll get double poison infections at once! Less time spent while killing ravasaurs! Also noticed that if you equip your weapons while still poisoned, the Ravasaur poison will go onto your weapon giving a 5 minutes Ravasaur Poison with 15 charges. Useful? Not really Sticking out tongue

Then my BabySaur gave me the following quest: Poached, Scrambled, Or Raw? Here I suggest to search the eggs on the eastern side of that area, plenty of eggs on the edge just where the desert "begins" after the terrain goes uphill.

I was going to mention the same bit as well. The first day I ran all over looking for these things, but day two I ran straight along the wall and got all 12 of my eggs in just under 3 minutes (I didn't bother to mount up between each egg)

I'll add that bit about egg

I'll add that bit about egg locations, if ya don't mind. Thanks Benhir and glad you are enjoying the quests Eye

WoW...

Wow, that's pretty much all there is to say about this guide. The detail and formatting is exceptional as usual and the layout itself is extremely easy to follow and well thought out. 10 Stars!! ^_^

I am currently on Day 2 with my raptor, just wish it didn't take so long, lol. Knowing me it won't matter as I am looking for a server to re-roll on myself. Been playing with some buddies on Caelestraz, but finding help for quests, or answers to simple questions is becoming rather bothersome... Time to pack up my alts and go elsewhere, lol.

Jiyambi's picture

Yeah, it does take quite a while. I myself am still on day 18! But, at least it's not too much to do each day, and the portal to Tanaris from Dal makes it less bothersome than it otherwise might have been.

Ðarien's picture

A side note..

Just thought I would mention, when you first describe how to get there after porting from Dal, it is actually faster to just mount up and run directly west and slightly north to get into Un'Goro.

Running all the way up to Gadgetzan, flying across only to run all the way south puts you a bit out of the way. Also, having the "Bloodsail Admiral" title and achievement it took and extra 5 minutes or so at each flight master fending off bruisers Laughing out loud .

Just thought it would pay to mention this as it is also the fastest way to get to the Silthid eggs for the dailies portion.

Hmmm good point. i think I actually did this when I did it, then forgot >_< I'll change it in the guide.

Wow... the level of detail

Wow... the level of detail you put into this is nuts. It's great!

Although I have to ask... has anyone else had trouble turning in the dailies? Sometimes it takes the hatchling several minutes to realise the daily is finished when I do it. It's not really a big deal, just boring to sit around Tanaris as a high level cause there's nothing to do there once the quest is done.

Jiyambi's picture

I have noticed that, both

I have noticed that, both for accepting and turning in the daily, it sometimes takes my hatchling a few seconds to offer the quest or the turn-in. But never more than five seconds.

What can I say,
Jiyambi's way of formatting is flawless!

I didn't know of this mount because since June I played very little (I'm looking for a good server to re roll but meh, can't find one that suits me). I'll try it just to get this extra-cool mount. The Wintersaber's quest had a grinding feeling that was a bit too much, while this quest line seems to be more thought-out because it seems to give the feeling of growing your baby pet. And anyway the quests are spreaded in 2 areas, more variety, then the interation with the pet is a good way to remember you what you are doing. I like it! Thanks Ji, finally I'll return playing WoW! Smiling

I'm glad you like it! I *completely* agree with you about the feel of the quests. Yeah, the mount itself isn't actually that awesome looking. But the feeling of having raised it from birth is just cool Smiling

Benhir's picture

Thanks for the nice replies

Thanks for the nice replies Smiling Yeah, I play on EU servers... in fact after I posted that I realized that it's Wed , manteinance day, sob! My realm will be offline 'til 15:00 and tomorrow until 7:00 because Blizz is addressing instance capacity. So more feedback will come in the weekend!

I'm sorry but…

"The Venomhide Ravasaur was introduced in patch 3.2 as the Horde counterpart to the Winterspring Frostsaber." This is wrong. It is not the counterpart, Blizzard is still trying to figure out something for the counterpart. This was posted in a a blue post by Ghostcrawler, I think. Sorry I am being a jerk, but the information is wrong.

"Like sands through an hourglass, so are the the days of our lives." Yet, you can't flip life upside-down and restart.

Even though it is Horde

Even though it is Horde unique, it is not the counterpart. In fact, I think it was previously available, but they removed it for a little bit of time.

Jiyambi's picture

Hmmm. I was under the

Hmmm. I was under the impression that it is the counterpart. There are several distinct similarities, including the level range the quests are introduced, the fact that it is faction exclusive, and the fact that it is technically ride-able at 75 riding skill (a fact that doesn't really matter anymore but is simply pointing to the similarity).

If you direct me to the source of your info I'd gladly change the guide, but as far as I understand and what I've heard from others, the information there is correct.

Although I read the same blue post saying that he did, I also found this: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/faction-change/index.xml

Jiyambi's picture

Since the Winterspring

Since the Winterspring Frostsaber converts to the Venomhide Ravasaur, I think it's safe to leave my statement in. Perhaps the blue was simply referring to the disparity between the methods and difficulties of getting the two different mounts?

That post is lost in the

That post is lost in the forums somewhere ha ha. I can't find where it is posted, but it doesn't matter. Keep it the way it is. Looking for the post for more then 30 minutes isn't worth my time.

Another great guide from Jiyambi. Helpful, well-formatted and easy to follow. Couldn't ask for more.

I just think the concept of this quest line is so cool. You are literally raising this mount from birth. And, the thing that startled me - as you get your tenth tooth (halfway through the process), the baby raptor actually grows into a hunter pet sized raptor. So you see the growth process in stages. It's neat Smiling Of course, he's not as cute as when he's a baby, with that giant baby face of his.
