Cyberpunk has been testing the waters for a while now.
Based on a tabletop game from 1988, a classic role-playing game (RPG) named Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk 2077 rapidly became ultra-popular. And if you haven’t played it before, now is the perfect time. Read on to find out why.
What’s Cyberpunk 2077?
Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a massive, neon-drenched metropolis in California. As the game title suggests, the year is 2077, and it is set in an era where technology and body modification rule. The mega-corporations control everything, and the line between humans and machines is blurry.
You play the game as V, a mercenary outlaw who’s trying to make a name for themself in the city. You have the option to select V’s background. The options include:
- Nomad
- Street Kid
- Corpo
The background you pick decides the story and dialogue options. You’ll also notice differences in how people perceive the character in the game. As V, you respond to high-risk jobs, called “gigs” in the game, for different clients. It isn’t long before V ends up with a biochip implant in their head, which ends up being a prototype containing the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves), a long-dead rock star and anti-corporate rebel.
That biochip for Johnny Silverhand starts to fuse with V’s, creating an internal conflict and battle for control.
And so, the story continues as V tries to find a way to remove the chip. It’s the perfect mix of open-world exploration, first-person combat, and RPG storytelling.
A Failed September Announcement Tease
In September, Cyberpunk 2077 news went a bit crazy after CD Projekt Red, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, made a cryptic announcement that there would be some news on September 4, 2025.
The announcement, dated for September 4, 2025, was this: “Our great nation is once again facing a mounting cybersecurity threat,” and it invited “brave netrunners to join our efforts and overcome this grave threat. The N.U.S.A. is seeking brave netrunners to join our efforts and overcome this grave threat.”
Nothing actually followed, and CD Projekt Red has confirmed that an upcoming Sept 4 announcement is not Cyberpunk 2077 DLC or a sequel, despite N.U.S.A. being a significant part of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
It was mere out-of-control speculation, but on September 3, CD Projekt Red confirmed they aren’t announcing a new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC this month and wouldn’t be addressing any update about ‘Cyberpunk 2,’ the upcoming sequel.
The Release and Marketing of New Games
Does this bring into question the marketing and release of new games? Not really, CD Projekt Red did put a bit of a cryptic message out there, yes, but it was people online who took an idea and ran with it.
In general, we’d say the release and marketing of new games has never been better. Ads are full of more suspense, the online build-up and teasers for games leave us with more excitement than ever, and there’s more information available about game releases. There’s the perfect mix of anticipation and information.
Cloud gaming and digital downloads are making it even better. You don’t have to hope you get a pre-order slot for a game and pick it up from a store. Games like Cyberpunk are readily available for download online.
We think this change in processes, not only with cloud gaming, but gaming in general, was essential for the progression of gaming titles to meet the demands of players. It’s the same for new online casinos that design their websites to be mobile-responsive and include a catalog of timeless classics and new releases.
It’s all about giving gamers what they want, and what they want is information, availability on demand, and great games.
The Much-Anticipated Cyberpunk 2
Yes, there wasn’t an eagerly awaited new DLC like the rumors suggested, but the development for Cyberpunk 2 is well underway. Entering the pre-production phase back in May 2025, previously with the codename ‘Project Orion,’ Cyberpunk 2 will include the original Night City and another new, second major city being described as “Chicago gone wrong.”
There’s not much more information to know about the release. Developed by CD Projekt, it has been pretty quiet on the development and how the game itself is likely to be, but we’re not surprised, considering it’s still only in the pre-production phase.
Some concerns are arising around the fact that CD Projekt did announce they’d use Unreal Engine 5, which is getting some bad press lately, especially from the new Borderlands 4 release.
There is also talk that Cyberpunk 2 will include a multiplayer feature. Then again, that was also teased for the original Cyberpunk 2077 game before being dropped.
Why Now Is The Best Time to Start Playing or Replaying Cyberpunk 2077
Because if you’ve read the first section about the gameplay, you’ll see it’s a pretty cool game.
And if you have played Cyberpunk 2077 but only as one of the options for the backgrounds of V, we’d recommend playing it again and picking a different option to see how the gameplay differs.
Even if you’ve played them all, why not play them again? While it’s unlikely that CD Projekt Red will ever release a DLC expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, you can at least remind yourself how good the game is.
CD Projekt Red is now firmly focused on Cyberpunk 2. And although there isn’t an official release date, we, the development team, estimate a 4-5 year journey from pre-production to release. That would make the earliest possible release late 2029 or 2030. Let’s hope that by then, the Unreal Engine 5 issues are fixed.
There’s never not a perfect time to play Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time, or even to restart it. It has everything you could want from an RPG, open-world-style game. It’s available to play on all the major platforms and consoles: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
