One of the most appealing aspects of gaming is for people to have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a virtual environment, with some dedicated gamers opting for sports-themed offerings and others preferring to take a deep dive back in time through a much-loved release. For some, modern-day options like GTA appeal, while others opt for western games filled with cowboys and horses. In fact, wild west-themed games have always been popular.

Western-style games certainly serve up plenty of entertainment. Even today, we’re seeing gaming audiences sample options like Smoking Pistols by Booming Games, a top title that transports players to the rugged landscapes of the Wild West. Additionally, options like Red Dead Redemption 2 are unforgettable for many gamers, with the action-adventure masterpiece recording notable success around the world. These two examples were inspired by the extensive collection of Wild West games that came before them.

Without some past classics paving the way, the genre arguably wouldn’t be as strong as it is today. So, without further ado, let’s take a look back at some of the best Wild West games ever.

Wild Guns

Most modern-day gamers probably won’t enjoy the limited graphics on show in Wild Guns, but for gamers who are partial to retro products, then this old-school shooting gallery-style game is a must. Blending a Wild West theme with sci-fi to create a truly unique gaming escapade, players can select one of two playable characters before tackling six challenging levels. With waves of enemies to see off and the game’s difficulty levels increasing the further you advance, Wild Guns is a fun game to tackle.

Hard West

Although Hard West isn’t one of the most realistic Wild West releases you’ll ever sample, it still warrants a proper session. Filled with dangerous cowboys and offering a strategic approach that some gaming communities adore, the aim of this one is to see off a range of demonic creatures in a challenging environment where trouble is always lurking around the corner. Hard West isn’t perfect but it definitely deserves a look.

Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood

A Wild West favorite for many diehard gamers, Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood is arguably one of the most underrated first-person shooters to have ever come to the fore. Offering a powerful storyline and faultless controls for a 2009 release, this PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 classic is hard to put down, particularly as your hunt for fabled gold gathers momentum. Playing as two American Civil War army deserters, called Ray and Thomas, Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood is a fantastic Wild West game.

Red Dead Revolver

The first instalment of the aforementioned Red Dead Redemption series of games, Red Dead Revolver didn’t record the same type of success as the iconic games that followed, but it’s still a title that many gamers remember fondly. A release with an enthralling storyline, the game follows a family man on a mission to seek revenge after his parents were killed. With the culprits on the loose, it’s up to you to hunt them down.

Sunset Riders

Another product that more senior gamers will recall, Sunset Riders was accessible on the Super Nintendo and is still adored by many gamers today. A gripping shoot-‘em-up where gamers could select from four characters before riding their horse through a gun-filled battle scenario, there are plenty of enemies to silence in this classic. As the game progresses, testing boss battles and damsels in distress add even more intrigue to this much-loved title that was arguably ahead of its time when it was initially released.
