You are currently viewing a Wiki Page. It can be edited by anyone who is currently logged in. Before you change anything, please make sure to read our FAQ, the editing guidelines of this post as well as its comments.

This wiki page will help us track who has volunteered to help translate sections of Jame’s Leveling Guides into TourGuide Format, so that we can finally publish an addon that will enable people following Jame’s Guide to do so without alt-tabbing.

Read Me!

Before you sign in for testing, revamping or writing a guide for the AddOn you should read the following two pages:

Now that you know what to do, you can take a look at the overview lists for the two factions. It might look a bit confusing on first sight but it’s really easy:

In the Status column you can see what the current status of every guide is:

N/A The guide has not been written yet (not available)
Testing The guide has been written but not been tested by anyone but the author.
Improvements The guide has been written and tested, but it needs improvements. Numbers behind the status will forward you to posts with information on the needed improvements.
Quality The guide has been tested, revamped and has a very good quality. The stars indicate how well the guide has been tested. A quality guide with one star has only been tested by one person so there might still be some flaws.

Now that you’re informed about what needs to be done, you have to look at the Progress column if the guide is already in work.

A indicates that there is no one working on this guide at the moment, so feel free to do it!

A tells you that there is someone working on that guide, if you click on the icon you will be redirected to the editors user-page.

Before you start editing a guide you should look if there are some edited files that are not included in the AddOn by default.

If the download arrow is green it means that there are files to download. Just click the arrow to download them. Put those files into the folder of the according Guide Package AddOn.

The little lamp will redirect you to a section on the “Mistakes” page. There you can see a list of known mistakes in the guide. You should take a look at this list even if the guide is not marked for Improvements!

If you found a guide that suits you and no one else is working at, you can either write a comment so that someone can add you to the list, or you can try to add yourself.

Please give us an update every week (at least) by changing the Last Updated column and giving some information about your progress in the Progress column so that everyone who wants to know can check how far you are. If we don’t hear from you in over a week, and someone else wants to take over revising/writing that section of the guide, it’s fair game! This way parts of the guide won’t be left unfinished.

If you’ve finished your part add a link to the file you edited in the Progress column and leave a comment!

Don’t know if this is the right place…I’m currently testing Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (51-60)with TourGuide.
The use button for Treant Muisek Vessel for the quest [50] Treant Muisek is missing.

Is there a post where I can report my testing ?

Collect all mistakes youCollect all mistakes you find in that guide and post a comment here if you’re finished. We’ll add a link to that comment in the overview list and change it’s status to Needs Improvements, so that someone can take this task.

I’ll add you to the Works in progress list now

        Thanks.

        So far i’veThanks.

So far i’ve completed 84% of this guide. I found the following errors :

        1. The use button for Treant Muisek Vessel for the quest [50] Treant Muisek is missing. The TomTom arrow indicates a wrong spawn point. Moreover, there is one spawn point missing, the one near the grimtotem compound.

        2. “Mountain Giank Muisek”=> The correct text is “Mountain GianT Muisek”. Moreover, the tip doesn’t indicate that you have to use the Muisek Vessel after you’ve killed the giant (it is on the text log though…). And the use button for the Muisek is missing.

        3. “Abandon Again with the Zapped Giants” : abandonning this quest cause the TourGuide to rollback : the addon ask you to go again take the quest from the goblin.

4.” Improved Quality” : no arrow. It could also be nice to indicate in the tooltip : “Head to the yeti cave to the southwest and gather 10 Rage Scar Yeti Hide from the yetis.”

        5. “Deliver to MacKinely” : it’s MacKinley.

Feedback yay!I like the quality stars, I was a little worried that mine was being reported as quality initially because while *I* think it’s good, there may be mistakes I didn’t see 🙂 So thanks!

This looks really nice Jahwo. Thanks so much for making it!

EDIT: One thing. I made a change to the wording in the blurb about updating your progress. I think we should make it clear that if people sign up for testing/revising/writing a section but never give us an update, someone else will probably start working on the guide. This isn’t saying they have to be DONE in a week – just give us an update to know they are still working on it. This seems reasonable to me and will keep guides from remaining unwritten/unrevised for long periods of time.

Arathi Highlands 35-37I was playing through the guide on my Pally and came across some errors. I updated the 35-37 section of the Arathi Highlands, it’s by no means perfect but if anyone wants a slightly updated version it can be found [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/002_35_37_Jame_Arathi_Highlands.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url].

I’ll put this up under the work in progress section, even though it’s technically “done”, so if someone wants to work on that section they can work from my slightly more updated file.

    Howling Fjord – GuideHi,

since this is my first post here, I want to use the oppurtunity to thank you all, and especially Jame for the great Guides, which helped me a great deal while leveling my alts.

Just now I am leveling a Shaman and got just through the Howling Fjord section of the addon. Thought I could just write down some problems as I see them and here’s my list 😉 :

Firstly I had some problems finding Scoodles from the quest “Scoodles” a note about him bein right below the surface would have been helpful, since his circuit is quite big and I wasted some minutes looking for him at the bottom of the sea.

Next was at “The Jig is up” : A note about the mob being in the cavern would be helpful, however I profited out of this since I got to kill King Pig, who was just above the mob ;).

The third point is about “March of the Giants”: I died thrice because I did not know about them being kiteable and was about to ignore this quest because of frustration till I decided to look up the quest in the written guide.

Furthermore at the Quest “Fallen Sisters” you can convert them without hitting them down on 30 % if you don’t aggro them. This is not in the written Guide either.

At the quest “Demolishing Megalith” I want to add that Megalith is kiteable too, therefore the giant as a pet is not neccesary for ranged fighters.

In addition to that there is a small spelling mistake in “Of Key and Cage”, which causes the taking of the quest not to be recognized ( not 100% shure if it was at the getting of the quest or at the handing in ).

Last at the quest “Leader of the deranged a somewaht mor detailed explanation of where to jump of the cliff would be nice. I did jum off the cliff into the water and had to recognize that I only would have to jump down one floor.

Hope you can work some of theese suggestions into the guide to make a great guide even better 😉

    Grateful Greetings
    Silpelit

Alliance Grizzly HillsDoing the quest [b][color=#cc9933]Out of Body Experience[/color][/b] causes you to zone into Silverpine Forest. Once you are brought back to Grizzly Hills, the guide skips back to have you pick up all the quests you currently have in your quest log.

Perhaps with the |Z| zonePerhaps with the |Z| zone tag? I haven’t looked at it at all but there’s gotta be a way. If worse comes to worse, dividing the guide into two separate guides might do the trick.

Desolace (37-38)Just finished running through Desolace on my pally and made quite a few corrections to the guide. I think it’s pretty good now, so I give it my “stamp of quality”, but I definitely would recommend at least one more person going through it. I had one step auto-complete weirdly, but can find nothing wrong with the code and when I un-checked it, it then completed as it should when I finished the quest. It was the Sceptre of Light quest, so if you test it please watch out for that.

Anyway I uploaded and linked the “finished” file, for Jame to include in the next update or if anyone wants to test it before then 🙂

Snowflake’s Blood Elf StarterI wanted to leave some feedback on this guide for whoever coded and anyone who is doing a more thorough testing. As a note this was my first time through the guide and I did not take very extensive notes but will present a few thoughts for you.

-Kill quests – The quests Aggression, Major Malfunction, and Pelt Collection do not have an accompanied note to watch for the associated mobs while doing the next set of quests.

-Optional quests do not appear optional, I dinged 12 when I turned in The Party Never Ends on my way to the Withered Keepers quests.

-The sequence of taking Cleaning up the Grounds, training in Silvermoon, then completing the quests seems strange. Perhaps moving that section until after completion of Word from the Spire and Abandoned Investigations.

I’m not sure if there’s a better place to give my feedback so I apologize if this is not the appropriate format. I hope this is helpful!

How come the little personHow come the little person has to be a business man with a tie? >_< That is not an accurate representation of me! 😉 😛

It would be really cool if it showed the person's name on mouseover, but that would be complicated and almost certainly not worth it.

It's a little frustrating that I'm mostly working on these in little sections, so it's not easy to link files with this format.

In other news: Revised the Barrens guide, not by live testing though - I just went through the code. I plan to test it out in game soon, but others are also welcome to do so. The file can be found [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/000_12_20_Hosho_The_Barrens.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url] - I'll also link it on the table.

Dustwallow Marsh lvl 39-40 UpdateThere were only a few things I added/corrected in this one. Note that for the “Stinky” coordinates, they are all funky because of how Lightheaded sees him as being many different places. Also the quest was bugged for me. Additionally, Lightheaded can’t seem to find the coordinates for the first few quests from the inn. Not sure how to fix these things, other than perhaps not entering the quest ID and manually entering coordinates. So I do not give this my stamp of quality, it needs some fiddling.

    Anyway the file is [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/002_39_40_Jame_Dustwallow_Marsh.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url].

Anyway, the good news is that it works now! Yay! But it needs to be added to the guide file for the next release. And it still hasn’t been tested – I’m planning to do that sometime in the next two weeks. This next week is another death week for me though, so I won’t be around much.

Sadly the |C|… Thing didn’t work for me so I had to take care of the class quests via notes… But as the class quests aren’t event mentioned in the original guide i think it’s an improvement. So far I have only covered the first 5 levels, since i don’t know if anyone else is working on it. Please answer me so I know if I can go on.

Hmmm, I’ve had no problemsHmmm, I’ve had no problems with the class quests, aside from forgetting to give quests with the same name a (Part 1) or (Part 2) etc. I’ll add it to the list above and put your name on it. When you’re done, I can go through it and see if I can make the class quests work.

Hmm, I’m having trouble withHmm, I’m having trouble with the quest “Noboru the Cudgel” in the first Swamp of Sorrows Horde guide. I set the item with a |U| use tag, but it actually equips the (exceptionally crappy) weapon first, and then on the second click actually uses it. Which is weird, because clicking it normally in your inventory just activates the quest. I was wondering around beating on crocolisks with it for a long time, wondering why my mace skill was increasing and why it was taking so dang long to kill stuff.

Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide – Borean Tundra (71-73)I found your addon yesterday morning after using the website version for several characters, and unfortunately for the community i didnt see this function right here until afterwards. If i knew i would have written down things i noticed (i will in the future though)

I ran through the entire Borean Tundra guide and have not found any errors with moblocations or anything like that.

Only thing i noticed was that the guide sent me ahead a step at Amber Ledge.
I did the “Prison Break” quest and was then sent straight to step 4 “Borean Inquisition” without first having done “Abduction”.
This might have been me clicking tourguide saying id done it but i dont think so… its unfortunately hard for me to recreate the event since my only other alt is 66 atm 😀

I would say your guide is AT LEAST 99,x% perfect.

I’ll start on the Dragonblight guide and get back with information on that, since i now know i have somewhere to post it

edit: seems that the problems stem from lightheaded having the wrong locations for things. i could add waypoints in manually, but the default waypoints would still be there, giving multiple waypoints.

edit: the priest class quest works fine.

Basicly, I’d like to how I can help? I saw a post from a gleamming jewel of colossal ignorance named “Chris” on Jame’s Blog. This idiot had the audacity to complain about guides not being written in a timely fasion. Needless to say this p’d me off, so I decided to help out.

Where might I place my efforts to help the most? I have The Barrens 21_31 rewritten with coords and all; just in testing now.

Again, thanks everyone. I can’t wait to see the final product.

It is very much a work in progress as I don’t have another level 78 toon to really test it with, but I did write it as I was playing, so I confident that a lot of the A, C, T and others N will work.

I would like to know how to submit it to the list so that others can use it and give me feedback. I will continue to work on it in the meantime.

The Horde Zangarmarsh Guide has a typo in it. The quest “Us or Them” is spelled “Us of Them.”

Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41)Hey everyone,

    I’m the new guy 😉

As a twinker I have used Jame’s guides over the last years non-stop. Now I have switched over to Horde recently and was of course also going to use Jame’s guides. Beeing pretty fit in programming / coding I have decided to contribute with testing and revising as I come along the TG version of this guide.

So now I have picked up Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41) as my responsibility and am already at level 36 and a half. Shouldn’t be too long until my undead mage has made it to level 41 I hope. Real life keeps me pretty busy, but I’ll do my best!

Do I understand this correctly in that I do all the testing and revising, and after that upload the changed files for people to test (the little green download-arrow)?

        ChangelogThanks 🙂

Do I keep a changelog of changes I make to the guide/files?

Sometimes a guide makes one go back and forth from one end of a camp to another to pick up quests. E.g. take a quest from NPC A, then one of NPC B (other end of camp) then the other quest of A and again another one of B. In this case I’d like to switch the order around. Is this ok or should the addon guide files rather be 100% as in the text version? In other words: are small improvements desirable?

        • img
          Mar 1, 2009 @ 0:39

A changelog is not requiredA changelog is not required but if you want to make one you can put it into a archive with the edited lua files 🙂

I don’t know about changing the quest order of the guides… I personally wouldn’t care as long as it improves the guide, but maybe you should wait for an answer by Jame.

Within a specific camp,Within a specific camp, where you are running around just picking up or turning in quests, PLEASE put it in a more logical order if you come across it 🙂 I think for these people mostly just have listed the quests available when originally coding it, where Jame just said “pick up all the quests” or something similar. So by all means put those steps in a good order 🙂

TourGuide Version of Horde Guide – Hellfire PeninsulaI just finished leveling in Hellfire Peninsula with my Death Knight using the HP version in Tour Guide (For the Horde!).

I’ve found a few things that I wanted to address that may make it better.

1 – First is just a suggestion: At Reaver’s Fall when talking to Wing Commander Brach and it says to pick the dialog to start the event, a note may need to be added for clarity to say which dialog should be chosen. There are two times when there are 2 different dialog options to chose from.

2 – At Spinebreaker Post: When gathering the quests “Make them listen” and “Preparing the Salve”, reorder the collection so that “Preparing the Salve” is picked up first.

3 – Another suggestion (may not be needed, but…). When at a quest hub and there are a lot of quests to be picked up, can notes be added to say who the quest giver is? Just for clarity?

4 – At Falcon Watch: To stop back tracking, change the order of “Flight Point” pick up and picking up the quest “The Great Fissure”. This would stop having to go up the tower, back down, and then back up again.

5 – After the Note that states “Last chance: Blacktalon”, the objectives of “Light Western Beacon” and “Light Central(?) Beacon” do not auto complete. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice anything in the chat display when I did it.

6 – I had an issue where is says to “Hearth to Falcon Watch” after completing the quest “From the Abyss”. I had almost 30 minutes on my cool down at this point. I did this part by running to Spinebreaker Post and flying to Falcon Watch.

7 – The note to get the quest “Leader of the Darkcrest” points at Ryathen the Seeker in Hellfire Peninsula at Falcon Watch and not at the Wanted Poster at the Cenariun Refuge in Zangarmarsh.

8 – For some reason the quest “Report to Nazgrel” and it’s completion are auto completed. This was noted after completing the “Demoniac Scryer” quest turn in.

9 – One last not or suggestion: If you complete all the quests in the guide with the exception of the PvP quest and “Foot of the Citadel”, the achievement “To Hellfire and Back” will be completed.

    Hope this helps.

New versions of Horde Hellfire, Zangarmarsh, and TerokkarI just added download links for versions of the Horde Hellfire, Zangarmarsh, and Terokkar guides. Most of the changes are in adding/correcting quest IDs, fixing case (since TourGuide is case-sensitive) in quest names, and adding item buttons for some quests that didn’t have them.

Separate patchfiles for the guides are available at http://www.morrisland.com/public/ which make it easier to see specifically what changed.

/approve Horde 21-31I just finished playing through this guide and have no major complaints. It follows Jame’s guide exactly, but it would be nice to have some more of his notes on how to complete each quest. I had to use LightHeaded and QuestHelper a few times to get some more details, but never needed to alt-tab out of the game to look something up. Other than that, I think it would be great to include class quests, but they’re not even mentioned in the Horde 21-31 online guide. Thanks to freedave2000 for translating the guide to TourGuide!

I did my best to incorporate as much from Jame’s original guide as possible. Also, I mostly used the written guides for guidance. I plan to go back and incorporate both the written and previous AddOn notes into a next revision.

Also, a question for you: When going through the guide, did you prefer to have a “Note” tag ahead of certain quests, or was it ok to mouse-over the quest for notes?

I used a mixture of both where it seemed appropriate. I’m curious, from a game-play point of view, which was notation system most helpful.

      Thanks,

        Hiya Dave!

        We want toHiya Dave!

We want to minimize the number of note tags as much as possible, because we want the guide to auto complete whenever possible. Use a note tag when advising people to look for multiple quest completion items as they go, or for important warnings that must be read before doing a quest (such as for a difficult escort quest). Otherwise, whenever possible, just use the mouse-over text to convey information.

It really depends. If it’sIt really depends. If it’s something the player will *probably* be killing anyway, and not something that needs a forceful reminder, I just add it as a mouse-over note along with whatever quest objectives they are completing while killing. Then at the end I leave a “complete killing quest” note with a mouseover saying “kill whatevers until you complete killing quest”.

However, I think I know the notes you are talking about – when Jame puts a special warning saying “Kill on sight” and has a list of mobs, which are killed throughout a large quest circuit. For those notices, I think I would make a “Kill on sight” or “Things to do” note tag that the user has to manually click off when he or she reads it.

Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41)Hey everyone, I have just finished revising Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41). I have made changes in a total of six files, from level 35 onwards. Before that were no fixes required.

    Now test away 🙂

    • img
      Mar 8, 2009 @ 4:01

Couple SuggestionsThanks for the updates! I’ll be at level 35 in a couple days, so I’ll test them out soon. Just a couple suggestions:

      – Notes for levels: Could you add notes for when you’re supposed to level? I find them very reassuring that I’m doing things correctly, or when I find I need to do some grinding before heading elsewhere.

      – 32_33_Thousand_Needles_Jame_3141.lua: I’m not sure if I have the latest version of this file, but the version I have has one Note called “Things to know” and no notes on each quest. If you’re also updating this file, could you take out the one Note and add notes to each quest? Jame’s guide has a specific path he recommends following and it would be nice to have TourGuide mirror that.

TG Horde – ZangarmarshI just completed the Tour Guide Horde Version for Zangarmarsh and I found the following things that I think should be addressed.

1 – A Note may want to be added to “Report to Shadow Hunter Denjai” to say that he is above the inn. Just for clarity and to stop those like me who are a bit slow.

2 – At Swamprat Post: After picking up the quest “Nothin’ Says Lovin’ Like a Big Stinger” add the turn in for “Withered Bastridium”

3 – After turning in “Saving the Sporeloks”, can a note to turn in more of the plant parts for “Identify Plant Parts” as a reminder to get them out of you bag? The only other place may be right before the end of the guide where is says to fly to “Shattrath”.

4 – After completing “Us or Them”, the next step is to hearth to Zabrajin. I still had 22 minutes left on the CD. I just ran to Zabrajin. Took about 2 minutes.

5 – For the turn in of “Now That We’re Friends…”, there is no arrow/directions from TomTom or TG (not sure which actually places the waypoint). Also, the tag does not auto complete when the quest is turned in.

6 – Lastly, following this guide I completed the achievement “Mysteries of the Marsh”.

On to Shattrath and Terrokar Forest :>

74-75 DragonblightI’m not playing wow anymore, but I thought I’d let you all have chance to make use of this guide I formatted for myself. It features all of Jame’s notes and a few added coordinates to help make finding objectives easier. I’ve played through this once making a few corrections as I go so it’s probably far from perfect. Whoever is working on this guide can free to use this however it would be of help (I noticed the link for the individual working on this guide is broken).

74-75 Dragonblight by RhovanionI gave this one a whirl while questing through Dragonsblight. I can’t vouch for how closely it follows Jame’s guide, since I only referred to the web version a couple of times, but this guide has been more glitch-free than any other of the wow-pro guides I’ve used, and I’m only a few quests from the end. Caveat – I have completed most of the group quests, but don’t intend to complete the rest.

When I did refer to the online version of the guide, I did find that it matched up. Thanks for the work you did. Excellent job, Rhovanion.

IMPOTRANT: 52-60 guide not written?Does anyone have any information about the 52-60 Horde guide (for the addon)?

Valtimus just finished testing the 51-52 section, available [url=http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PMS8D7KE]here[/url]. He has implied that the 52-60 section has not been written yet.

I just want to make sure this is the case. If it is, I would be very happy to take on writing this part of the addon guide, since my pally is just coming in to this level range. If you know anything about this, please post ASAP. Thanks!

There comes 002_51_52_Jame_Feralas.lua, and next up is 002_60_63_Jame_Hellfire_Peninsula.lua 🙁

    Horde 41-51 UPDATEHey folks,

I just finished testing and doing a massive revamp on the Horde 41-51 section. It’s far from perfect, but also much better than it was. This shouldn’t receive the “quality” sticker just yet, but it’s definitely play-able now and shouldn’t have any major problems. Most remaining issues are stylistic and will be fixed slowly as folks play it through.

The file can be downloaded [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/WoW-Pro_TourGuide_Horde_41-51.rar?attredirects=0]here[/url], is linked in the table above, and will be part of the next addon release.

I’ve decided to take on writing the 51-60 addon guide for Horde. I noted it in the table, but wanted to post here just to be clear and so that we don’t have people overlapping their work.

I was going to implement it. I already had uploaded an updated file, before you changed the link and now i noticed that. I changed the link back, your additions are included. I added this feature to the Dwarven Digging Quest as well. I didn’t do the druid quest, but if i remember right you had to use something to summon the last enemy, too. I will figure that out soon and then add it to the file. I also fixed the Thunder Bluff coordinates and added a line that tells you to go to the next step to all non-autocompleting objectives.

It’s nice you already did some testing. Please try to use my updated file for the rest of the guide and keep me informed about how it’s going. Just write me a PM or post a comment here.

Difficult bitShinke, I’ve gotta say the guide is really good. However when you send us into the mine at level 8, that is really early and very difficult at that level. Though I am pretty experienced with playing a hunter I found it very difficult, especially because of the rather quick respawns. Might it not be better to send us to do that quest one or two levels later on? Maybe you could re-arrange it a bit. I am level 12 and roughly 80% to level 13 at the end of the guide anyways.

I thought quite a bit about that, you could include it after doing arra’chea and so on. But I guess you wouldn’t be able to accept Hunter’s Way then. You’d have to go back to Bloodhoof Village more often that way. I will have a look at it again though… Maybe you can rearrange it to make it a little bit easier.

    * “Return to Bulkark” quests need to be seperated inyo “Part”s
    * Argent Dawn quest should be “A” not “N” tag so auto-completes
    * Dalson circut needs work; mainly, set auto-complete guidelines
    * “Unfinished Business…” quests need some work
    * “So Called Mark…” quest line needs coords
    * “The Jerimiah Blues” and Charm quest lines were not available to DK. I don’t know if this is normal or not, but my DK unable to take quests. It was late, so I did not research too much.
    * Better notes on “Wildlife Suffers” part 2
    * better notes/placement of “Shopping List” tag line. It’s a bit confusing because the items are drops in Eastern Plaguelands.

some info“Argent Dawn Commission” does not touch the quest log, you talk to the npc and press complete, and hence will not trigger TourGuide to advance, because TG checks the log and not quest events. In response to that I made it a note with a loot tag to auto complete when you receive an item. There are a few others like this, but some of them do not have static loot.

I played through this guide as i was making it and again before it was submitted and on both runs i have not had any problems with “The Jerimiah Blues” or the Charm quest lines, so i’m not sure what the problem may be.

PS: What did you think of the DK starting area? Was it ok despite the lack of coords?

      • img
        Mar 14, 2009 @ 5:07

Gethe, yup the starting areaGethe, yup the starting area was fine.

        * I did incorrectly mention the Argent Dawn quest. After testing I discovered that you’re correct. “Mission Accomplished!” is the same.

        * No idea regarding the Jerimiah/Charm quests. Only thing I can think of is a level issue. My DK was 61 when attempting to do quest(s). I belive the quest is [52], so I should have been able to take it.

        * my confusion of on the “Shopping List”. I did Jame’s plagueland guides a few weeks back and these items were collected in the “Mini-grind” section.

FYI, aside from a couple of coord issues and a few note issues, the guide plays well. I just completed with my DK.

Oh yeah, by the way, running a DK through Plaguelands freakin’ rocks!

Just a few things that I’ve noticedFirst and foremost, thanks a lot to all of the people who have taken the time to work on this version of the guides, as you’re seriously saving my chronically leveling self a whole bunch of time. Running through the guides I’ve noticed a few things that are mostly cosmetic in nature, but have lead me to enough frustration that I’ve actually learned to write guides so I can make things how I like them.

    What I’ve noticed is:
A} A tendency to forget about the |Z| tag. This needs to be used if the location of a waypoint is not in the same zone as the guide is written for. If you don’t do this the guide assumes the waypoint is for the zone of the guide (I figured this out when I ran from Dragonblight to Grizzly Hills and back, because I didn’t read the quest and just followed the arrow).
    B) An over reliance on notes (N, not |N|. There really isn’t a reason, at least that I can think of, for there to be more than 2 (at the extreme most) notes in a row, as most of the information can be consolidated into one, and a single note can hold multiple waypoints, so there’s no need to break it up for that.
    C) Using the Kill (K) unnecessarily. If I’m going to be doing all of quest A at a time I don’t need a K for mob1, mob2 and mob3, instead just add a note(|N|) to the C line giving me the instructions and any waypoints. This will also let the addon load all of the next quest objectives.

Again, thanks a whole bunch to all of you who’ve worked on these addons, you’ve really made my life a whole lot easier.

Thanks very much for theThanks very much for the advice!

[list=A][*]I definitely agree with this one, and I will add it to the common mistakes in the “How to the Contribute”.
[*]Also agree, this is somewhat explained in the “How to Contribute” page as well. There are *some* cases, generally only in cities and between circuits, when I could see there being a reason to have two notes in a row – for example one saying to sell/train/restock and a second afterward noting to get certain items out of the bank. That sort of note might be missed as a |N| text explanation of the first note, and is very important for the next section of the guide. But, for the most part, I agree.
[*]For this one, sometimes it can really help in guide writing to break these up. When the mobs are all in the same area it definitely makes more sense to use a C type step rather than a K type step. But sometimes steps are broken up – killing one type of mob, doing something else, then killing the next type. In those cases, the K type objective is the best one to use.[/list]

Anyway, thank you for the feedback!

Phuze, thanks for thePhuze, thanks for the comments. I’d actually disagree with point 3.

I find the opposite more frustrating. When you see a line named “Complete ABC” quest, there’s no context. A “C” tagline is the same for kills, collect, loot and use quests. This means, for most folks, you have to hover over the quest to look at the note for further instructions.

For me, I like the use of Auto-completing “K” and “N” tag lines. I feel, when used effectively, these convey the most information in the shortest amount of time. Plus, they are the best way to guarantee coordinates for each phase of a quest. Not to mention, for quests like The Shimmering Flats in the 31-41 guide, they’re the only way to go. Finally, a series of auto-completing “K” tags allow you to track you progress on hunting quests without an additional addon.

In fairness, the biggest disadvantage is that Tourguide doesn’t seem to handle these well when you insert yourself in the middle of a guide.

Just my opinion. Again, thanks for the discussion. 🙂

I tested the Mage classI tested the Mage class quest for the 1-12 Troll/Orc guide and found some slight problems.

The quest ‘Speak with Un’thuwa’ mentions a mage trainer in Razor Hill. No such trainer exist, so you have to take it in Orgrimmar, which also means that missing co-ordinates (39, 86) needs to be added.

Also, when turning in the follow-up and final quest ‘Ju-Ju Heaps’ it might be useful to add a HS to Razor Hill item for mages.

Shinke’s Tauren Starter (1-12) UpdateI implemented the |U| Tag for the last Druid quest.

I also added a note that you can leave out “Supervisor Fizsprocket”, since it might be quite hard sometimes. I remind you to do this quest on a later occasion though.

    That’s all for now.

The only downside is that due to the mechanics of tourguide you have to cancel the Quest in order to go on, which involves a little bit of extra running around later on. You could work around it by using a kill Tag for Fizsprocket and working with notes for accepting and completing. The “optional” Tags in Tourguide involve to drop the quest in order to go an anyway, so they won’t help.

I will work an that in the next days. I hope there’s nothing else to be done after that. We’ll see.

Horde Nagrand guideIn the Horde Nagrand guide (both add-on and regular versions), there is a step to turn in “Missing Mag’hari Procession, but the NPC listed as the questgiver on WoWHead won’t give me the quest. I was able to get the next quest in the chain, so it isn’t really holding me up, but I wanted to know if anybody can confirm if this quest is still in the game, or requires a specific level of Mag’Hari rep?

      Mar 17, 2009 @ 9:40

If I had to make a guess,If I had to make a guess, I’d say you’d done something or another out of order, and as Missing Mag’hari procession is a ‘breadcrumb’ (i.e, one quest that leads you to a chain from a hub, but isn’t actually necessary) it’s possible that you either already have taken the quest after, or you’ve already done a quest while removes your availability to take the quest.

This probably won’t make ‘Nagrand Slam’ much harder, though, as by the time you’ve done all the quest necessary to get it, you’ll have a few more left over for you to do that aren’t to challenging, so it doesn’t really matter.

Hey folks, just an update onHey folks, just an update on the Horde 51-60 addon section which I am currently writing. I’ve got up to lvl 57 done and tested. There were a few minor bugs that I am not 100% sure got fixed as I went (they were things I couldn’t test on the same character, for example the next step auto-completing when I turned in a quest for some reason). So more testing on those would be great, but overall I think they are pretty high quality. Jame’s 41-51Hey, I’m currently at level 47, going through the horde guides, I’ve got two things so far for Jame’s 41-51:
    Stranglethorn Vale – Stranglethorn fever:
When i complete the quest whith the 3 gorilla waves, it does not mark the quest as completed in the little box on my screen, so it does not move on to the next step: Scaring Sharky, and not even if i manually click the checkmark. Did the two quests and ran back to Booty Bay, and first when I had handed in the quest it decided to move on.

Dustwallow Marsh (43) – Lack of Surplus
The quest Lack of Surplus is in Swamp of sorrows, at the east coast, but for some reason the mark on my map, and the arrow which leads way, is at Dustwallow Marsh.

EDIT: I’ve just hit The Hinterlands, and got completed the Cortello’s Riddle (part 3) and am standing at the waterfall. Now I’m getting told to pick bottles up for a quest called “Whiskey Slim’s Lost Grog” which I do not have, and I am sure that I have not been told to get it. To be sure i just checked the online guide, and no.. That quest is not there. I’m confused 🙂

The packet includes an updated guide index file so the guides will show up in game. I also basically chopped the Hellfire Peninsula guide in half and included that version of it as well, for those who want to go to HFP at 58, then go back to Azeroth for the rest of the guide, and then return at 60. Let me know if you have any questions.

Overall the quality should be pretty high. There were a few cases where the guide behaved erratically, completing steps that shouldn’t have been completed. I am *hoping* this is due to my frequent UI resets, and that it just got confused. But this section does need more testing before it gets a quality star.

Hosho + Jame 21-31I just completed the barrens guide. It was good, nice leveling speed. It’s getting revamped anyway but i found it quite good already. You just should pick up goblin invadors when you pick up avenge my village, because then you can directly fly to sunrock retreat after finishing the barrens. this way you have to walk, because you have to pick that quest up :jawdrop:

Jame 21-31 really need work. Some of the coords are of and what’s realy annoying is the use of kill objectives for EVERY quest even though there’s absolutely NO need for them, because the complete objective would do the job perfectly.

Then we fly to Splinter Tree to turn in one single quest over zoramgar, then back to zoramgar and then port to OG. Wouldn’t it be better to just do the stuff in zoramgar, fly to splintertree and then port? 😕

Levelingspeed: Using a hunter with nearly no rested XP it took me 11.5 hours to reach level 21.5 and finish the barrensguide. Took around 50 minutes per level in the barrens.

Nice. Up to making theNice. Up to making the transition i was 15 minutes in level 21 and already 30-40% in that level, i think i could have made that level up with only 45 minutes played or even less, if the transition wasn’t so rough.

I’d suggest taking more care of the origin one comes from. Maybe you can do different versions of a .lua that only goes as far as you need until the guides are the same again and then let the barrens/silverpine/ghostlands guide each point to its own .lua. So the user doesn’t have to click half of the steps away.

You would make a Guide named [WoW-Pro | Barrens to Jame’s 21-31] Stonetalon Mountains (21-21) and include it like this:

        TourGuide:RegisterGuide(“[WoW-Pro | Hosho’s] The Barrens (12-20)”, “[WoW-Pro | Barrens to Jame’s 21-31] Stonetalon Mountains (21-21)”, “Horde”, function()
        return [[

        or something similar.

Thanks Tz, can you listThanks Tz, can you list examples of the coords that are off? I took the time to validate each against Wow-head and Wow-DB, I’d love to correct ’em.

Can I ask a question, why “annoying” for the use of Kill quests? I’m genuinely curious. The genesis for these came from this line in Jame’s syntax guidelines:

“Anytime you can provide an arrow for the player to follow, it greatly improves the guide. Rather than making them read a huge block of text as directions, just have them ‘follow the arrows’ and list a series of coordinates…”

So, bearing this in mind, a couple of questions for my improvement:

      * where the kill quests in bad order?
      * did you ever have to go to a dual monitor to complete a segment?
      * I’m assuming you have run these quests a million times, so from your experience, do you prefer to see one line and done?
      * Do you ever need to hover over a quest to read its instructions/notes?

If the kill quests are slowing the guide down, they should be removed. It seemed logical to me that they would speed things up.

Thanks a bunch for the input.

Alliance DragonblightI’m working my Death Knight through one of the 2 Dragonblight guides posted here, can’t remember which. Does anyone know if Rob is still working on his version?

School was canceled today (and I work at the school) due to blizzard (not the company) conditions, so I spent the day getting my Priest through the rest of Icecrown. I went back and used the Dragonblight guide with my Death Knight. I’m about 50% through and should get through the rest of the guide tomorrow, barring “honey-do’s.”

Just curious what we need to do.

Horde Zangarmarsh RevisedI just finished revising the Horde Zangarmarsh guide, the updated file is [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/002_63_65_Jame_Zangarmarsh.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url]. Aldor vs Scryer updateWhoever was walking about the reps being disadvantaged if you were a draenei going Scryer was incorrect. Once you do the little quest for Kadgar, your rep goes to neutral with the factions of your choice (though not friendly, so this does make it harder to get the exalted rep but shouldn’t matter for quests).

I am updating the rest of the Outland guide to include a version for both factions.

Hellfire: The Foot of the CitadelHey again
I’m now lvl 63 on my druid. Going really fast with these guides 🙂 I saw a little author’s note in the Hellfire quest “The foot of the Citadel” saying that the quest is very difficult to solo: a DK might be able to easy, but not confirmed.
I can now confirm, to who ever put in that note: it is easily soloable by a 63 feral druid 🙂 using bear form only, did it when I thought I might as well try it before going Zangarmarsh.

What I did was: Hotting up, rooting 1 add –> bear form, then killing the other add. Then nature’s grasp the Elite guy (away from the rooted add) then charge up to the add and kill it. Afterwards if was basicly just using CD’s and made sure i had enough rage for my frenzied regeneration to heal me.

Horde Levelling Guide Hinterlands (48-50)Very good work here – just wanted to add a little feedback.

Skull Rock. I think it is worth mentioning the cave under skull rock as it has 3 horde supply crates in it.

Agol’watha. Might be worth mentioning the crates are hidden a bit behind stone tablet/wall things and they should clear to the back.

After the Jintha’alor circuit there is a suicide run to the bottom. I find it is easier to clear the two guards from the tunnel leading to sharpebeake and then go through it, and jump down carefully, healing as necessary and then ride out. It is much safer!

Thanks for this – it’s wonderful!

Maybe we could use the bugMaybe we could use the bug report page not only for bugs but also for any other test runs. I don’t see any of the guides receiving (further) stars, although they are there for quite some time. Maybe clearing up the conditions under which the stars are given would help as well. I just think it’s time that some guides get their green hook ^^. It would make it more clear which guides still need work.

I just think there’s a lack of feedback currently.

Another question: Is Hosho still working on his Barrens guide? There’s no one listed for working on this. And instead of Jiyambi, Freedave is listed for 21-31. But as long as someone’s working on it it’s fine ^^

    • img
      Mar 31, 2009 @ 5:25

I couldn’t get ahold ofI couldn’t get ahold of Hosho, so I went ahead and ran through the Barrens guide, the updated file is linked for download. It’s not perfect yet though and needs more testing.

I’ve messaged FreeDave and I’m hoping he’ll be done with 21-31 soon so I can speed test it, but at the moment no I’m not working on it.

For the quality stars: I agree, we need to be more clear. Right now, basically just leave a comment if you feel the guide deserves a star. This means you have run the most recent version and had extremely minimal issues, which you fixed, or no issues – it flows nicely, there are no spelling/language mistakes, and overall it’s something that WoW-Pro should be proud to show to the public.

I’ll see about writing a more specific definition for the stars in a bit, with input from the other moderators and of course Jame 🙂

Hey guys, sorry for my lackHey guys, sorry for my lack of activity, I’ve been very busy with RL stuff. But I’m back now, so I’m going to catch up on everything and upload a new version of the addon tonight!

ps: There’s a problem with the 40-50 and 50-60 alliance files someone uploaded (sorry I’m not sure who did). All the zones are grouped together into one single .lua file for 40-50 and same thing for 50-60.

This is not good. We must split the guide by zones for several reasons

    1. The file becomes too big and can create problems when loading
    2. The longer the file, the harder it is for someone to jump in the guide midway.
    3. TomTom requires the proper zone name in each .lua or it will give wrong coords in many cases.

Anyway, in the current version of the addon, the zones are properly split up, so if you are going to work on a section, don’t change that, don’t group them up into one big .lua, you will be wasting all the work you put on the files if you do that. Only change what’s inside the .luas

Oh and also, please don’t change the name of the files, unless you see a mistake in the zone name. And if you do, mention it to me because I’ll have to fix the mistake in the .xml file as well.

    Thank you!

To upload groups of guides,To upload groups of guides, use a zip or rar file to put all the guide files in one folder. Just thought I’d mention that in case that was the reason someone grouped them all like that.

USE OF ZONE TAG!I am currently working on the Horde 21-31 guide, and the zone tag is not used AT ALL in this guide. This means all the coordinates that were put in that are not in the main zone point to the COMPLETELY WRONG PLACE!

You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO use this tag when you are talking about a zone that is not the main “title zone” of the lua file you are working on. It makes all your hard work getting those coords useless to the user! Luckily it’s not hard at all to add after the fact, and I’m taking care of the 21-31 guide now, but please in the future use this tag!

EDIT: Also I didn’t mean to sound harsh, I made this mistake at first too. I just wanted to stress how important it was 😉

I will turn to the piece de resistance of any good tester ‘Huh? Works on my pc.’ …it does, I ran twice in testing.

FYI, as I’m sure you are aware, if the zone and the title do not match, Tourguide will default to the current zone. Because |Z| is hardly mentioned on the syntaz page, and, in the original 21-31 .lua files, was never even used. I did not use it either. Instead, I followed the written guide to a tee and pointed the user to the right zone via coord. Agian, this worked spledidly for me, but I knew what to expect. Obviously there is a way to break it.

No big deal. It’s your show. I”M JUST HERE TO PARTY!

BTW hope you rocked ur finals 🙂

Huh, I guess I should haveHuh, I guess I should have realized this. Well poo. Ignore all my silly comments then!

I have heard complaints of things pointing to the wrong place though, specifically for this section, so it’s probably best to include them. Just not as crucial as I made it out to be 😛

Also, I did well enough to pass, and that’s good enough for me 😉

      • img
        Avr 7, 2009 @ 17:45

That’s not exactly true. That’s not exactly true. Tourguide will default to the current zone ONLY if the zone title you put in the file is erroneous, and it will give an error message everytime a new step contains a note with coordinates.

On the other hand, if you put the zone name properly at the start of the file, all the coords will point you to that zone, even if you are on the other side of the universe.

        Conclusion:

        1. Put in the correct zone name in the file at the start.
        2. When we move to another zone, make a new file with the correct zone name again.
        3. However, if you only have to do a few steps in another zone, use zone tags, there’s no need to create an extra file just for a few steps.

Example: Let’s say you are writing the addon for a big questing section in Duskwood, but a few steps make you go to Westfall to complete only 1 or 2 quests and then make you hearth to stormwind to train new skills and turn one quest in, before going back to Duskwood to resume questing. How many files will you need?

Just one in that case. Use Duskwood as zone name and add zone tags for Westfall and Stormwind to the corresponding steps.

        • img
          Avr 7, 2009 @ 18:16

The other reason is, usersThe other reason is, users don’t always go directly from one step to the next. Sometimes they deviate from the guide, to quest with a friend, do an instance, or a group quest. If zone tags aren’t used, they will get incorrect coordinates.

Bloodelf starterI just finished the guide with what i think is the latest version. It’s nice except the following:

Defending Morningbreeze should be taken later. You are told to accept it and then run back to the camp where you come from, afterwards you cross the quest giver again.

You should first finish the quests in the northeast (we are told to accept them (Willythen and the spire) and then go to silvermoon, just to return and finish them later) befor going to silvermoon.

the |Z|-Tag is missing for the Silvermoon steps

You should first kill witherbark the old and do the follow up quest for that while killing the other treants while doing that. Otherwise you end up killing more treants than you need and spending more time than you need.

I got the version from 1. of april.

(Adding class quests would be nice too ^^)

An addition I made – I created two separate files, one for Aldor and one for Scryer. The difference is not great in this guide, but I plan to follow this template for later guides (namely, the Netherstorm guide). If you choose to play the scryer version, you MUST also download the updated guide file. Hmm, the zone name formatHmm, the zone name format used in your file is wrong:

      Hellfire Peninsula (WoW-Pro | Jame’s 60-62)

      It should be:

      [WoW-Pro | Jame’s] Hellfire Peninsula (60-62)

That’s the naming format we’ve been using since January now, which makes me a little worried about the version of the file you used to make your revamp. You might have based your work on a file which was outdated and therefore probably missed a lot of fixes which had already been made.

So please from now on, before you start working on a section, download the latest version!

Now I’m gonna have to cross check your version and the current one to see if any of the previous fixes are missing, and that’s a lot of work :/

    Horde Nagrand Update!Hey folks!

Made some very minimal changes and corrections to the Horde Nagrand addon file. Like all the Outland guides, it was already very high quality so only small changes were needed, and as such I’ve given it it’s first quality star. It is now available for download [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/002_67_69_Jame_Nagrand.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url].

    Enjoy!

P.S. for more juicy details about this update, [url=http://fiannaguild.blogspot.com/2009/04/horde-leveling-addon-nagrand.html]check my blog post[/url].

[WoW-Pro | Jame’s 41-51] Swamp of Sorrows (41)Hey guys, something seems to be mixed up in this guide and the previous ones…
In 002_38_39_Jame_Stranglethorn_Vale.lua you are e.g. told to Accept, Finish and Turn in the quest Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 1):

    Line 6: A Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 1)|QID|570|
    Line 11: C Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 1)|QID|570|
    Line 38: T Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 1)|QID|570|

Then I am told to take the follow up:

    Line 39: A Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 2)|QID|572|

The next time this quest is ever mentioned is in the file 002_41b_Jame_ Swamp_of_Sorrows.lua:

    Line 5: A Mok’thardin’s Enchantment |N| (31.13, 29.24)| |L|3862 1| |QID|571|

Nowhere in the guide files in between you are ever told to do the objectives or hand in part 2 of the quest line before accepting part 3. Not to mention that the “(Part 3)” part is missing in the A command 🙂

Unfortunately I do not have the time for WoW anymore and have therefore cancelled my subscription. So I will be off of WoW in 2 days 🙁 Still I will continue to watch the progress and thank you all for putting so much effort in this project! Good luck!

        Lines 11-15:

C Raptor Mastery (Part 3)|N|Jungle raptors are just across the road from the miners. Keep the Jungle Stalker Feathers you find too. | |QID|196|
        C Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 2) |N|Keep killing raptors until you find 10 Jungle Stalker Feathers. (33,39)| |L|3863 10| |QID|572|

        A Mok’thardin’s Enchantment (Part 3) |N|Get the follow up. | |QID|571|

While testing is alwaysWhile testing is always welcome and useful, we don’t really *need* coordinates added for all questgivers because Lightheaded does the job for us. So I wouldn’t waste the time if I were you. It would be better to just test the other facets of the guide – make sure coords are always provided when doing quests, for example.

      • img
        Avr 10, 2009 @ 5:19

While most quests do notWhile most quests do not need coords for the quest givers, there are some quests that are received from objects such as signs, outhouses, or any of the other inanimate objects in the game world. These do not have coords recorded for them in Lightheaded, if you find any of these that do not have coords please do post them

I goto the NPC and when it goes to quest description thing(where u can accept/decline it) tourguide says this quest is not in your guide! but its the quest it is telling me to get. i went into the code and checked it the QID is correct and now im incredibly confused.

      Avr 11, 2009 @ 22:54

The problem is in theThe problem is in the quest’s title, not the quest ID. TourGuide isn’t recognizing the title as belonging to that quest for some reason. Which faction are you, Horde or Alliance?

      • img
        Avr 12, 2009 @ 5:04

Maybe it’s because it saysMaybe it’s because it says (part 1) in the title?

          Avr 12, 2009 @ 5:07

No, unless it’s the factNo, unless it’s the fact that “part” isn’t capitalized. Multiple-part quests *have* to have the (Part X) in the title in order to keep them all from auto-completing when the first one does. Tourguide is programmed to ignore that when checking the title on the accept screen, but it’s possible that it’s caps sensitive and that might be the problem.

If so, then it is indeed a problem with Lightheaded conflicting with TourGuide, and yes, the only way to fix it would be to remove the quest ID. But please be sure that the coordinates for other steps are working correctly first, so we know that this is the cause and not something else with your user interface.

Since my testing character is level 70 now and I’m anxious to run instances, I’ve decided to skip on to Howling Fjord. I will come back and write the Blade’s Edge guide eventually if no one gets to it sooner. However right now I want to run instances, and mostly people run instances in Northrend at my level, and I just don’t have the gear to tank them properly with these low level quest rewards. So, on to Howling Fjord, and I’m sorry if you were looking forward to the Blade’s Edge guide!

Just tested the Hellfire guide on my Death knight, I don’t think I found any mistakes, however I think there were one or two way points missing. Unfortunately my hard disk just mucked up and I have to reinstall the OS. This means I lost the nice little text file that I had with all notes (few though they were) on this guide. 🙁

Haha, I was too tired to report them, but things to watch out for are missing coordinates and missing quest turn-in steps, or for that matter, glitchy complete steps.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just that I checked off a step when I wasn’t supposed to, but they were “note” steps! I didn’t think they were linked to quest turn-in steps! :O

Anyway, I’ll start going through the Dragonblight guide soon, and this time I’ll report EVERYTHING. 😀

    Shadow Moon ValleyHi Jame,
The guides I have tried are so good it’s hard to imagine not using them whenever I want to level a character!
I jumped into Shadow Moon Valley guide as I had already done a few of the quests before I decided to give your add-on a try. I just finished the guide and tried to select the next part “Howling Fjord”. It automatically came up as 100% completed and loaded Borean Tundra. I have a level 72 character, should I proceed to Borean Tundra, is it a fault. Your advice would be appreciated.

Making Money while guide testingHey folks!

I know some of you are taking a page from Jame’s (and my) book and trying to level brand new characters on brand new servers to test this addon.

I have been doing this (as most of you know) to speed test the addon. I have been absolutely shocked at the amount of money I have been able to make with pretty much zero time and effort.

To shamelessly plug my blog, [url=http://fiannaguild.blogspot.com/2009/04/making-money-as-lowbie.html]go check out my most recent post[/url] to see how I do it. You should have no problem at all getting 16 slot bags and your mount by level 30.

I might make this into a gold guide here someday, but it’s really a very simple set of tips and I don’t think it’s guide worthy. Perhaps one of you gold guide people will incorporate it into one of your guides, that would be excellent and you have my full permission and support 🙂

Work in Progress….I still have 3 toons to go through that zone (in steps). The second time you get Fjord Grubs (I think that’s what they’re called, the step where you have to get 10 of them) didn’t auto complete. I looked and looked and couldn’t figure out why it didn’t. I’d like to go through at least one more time. There was one other step that I can’t remember (it’s on a notepad at home and I’m at work) that wasn’t correct and I’d like to go by at least one more time.

I did put another star up and my mage is working his way through Borean Tundra now so that should have a second star shortly. I think Jame is downloading all the “works in progress” files and putting them into the “current” release when he posts that. If that’s not correct, let me know.

My wife is going to go across the state to visit her daughter this weekend which I thought meant I’d have the weekend to play. 🙂 Apparently, I’m going along….. 🙁

Alright, good to hear. YouAlright, good to hear. You really are very thorough with testing, I like that! 🙂

Concerning the “removing yourself” I didn’t mean the download link of course. That should always remain linked to the most up to date file version. What I meant was when one person is finished testing & revising and has uploaded the most current file, then they should remove their name as being the current person in charge. That way everyone knows which guides can be picked up for revision, and which ones cannot (because they are currently being worked on by somebody).

          • img
            Mai 7, 2009 @ 16:20

Thorough? That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever called me…..I appreciate that….LOL

I wouldn’t say I’m thorough, I just know that I never get anything right the first time…..Or the second time, or the third time, etc. A wise man once said that practice makes perfect. I’m just hopeful that I will have gone through enough times that Jame will be able to run through it once and give it a perfect and be able to go to the next step.

BTW. I just noticed that whoever did the original Howling Fjord put a version number (and date) at the top of the file. I’ll be adding that to the rest of the files I’m going through. I’ll also note that in the above list so that Jame can see what the current version is.

Need help with codeHey folks, having just encountered this bit in the guide I am just revising, I am not sure how to fix the problem.

    The code:

    T The Lady’s Necklace |QID|9175| |O| |T|
    A Journey to Undercity |QID|9180| |O| |PRE|The Lady’s Necklace| |T|

The behaviour we [b]want this to have[/b] is:
If [i]The Lady’s Necklace[/i] has been completed, take the follow up [i]Journey to Undercity[/i].

However it is completely ignoring the second step, since we already turned in [i]The Lady’s Necklace[/i] and it doesn’t seem to determine that it [b]was[/b] completed. 🙁

    Any help?

This only works if TheThis only works if The Lady’s Necklace was turned in during the same guide, because it only checks if there are any steps in the guides completed. It can’t access your invisible list of completed quests that I really wish Bliz would make visible >_<

Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (21-31)As discussed with Jiyambi, I am taking on Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (21-31) for testing. I have done and will be doing revisions as I go along, as I see fit.

On another note: Is it possible that not many people are still working on the guides? It seems as if quite a number of helpers have disappeared 🙁 I loved to see several posts here every day, and now it’s only ever my own posts I get to read here 😀 🙁

Hah, I’ve noticed this too.Hah, I’ve noticed this too. I do know that, at least on the Horde side, some of the later guides (60+) need little to no revisions, they are really high quality. But the 30-40 section needs a lot of work.

I myself have been less active with this of late, due to RL and other WoW commitments, but once summer rolls around I should be back to my old activeness.

I’ve been taking my mage through Borean Tundra over the last couple of days. I was around halfway through before I realized that I was using on old copy of the file. It won’t be receiving a second star on this pass. Fear not, I still have a warrior and a paladin to go through the zone so hopefully it will be in good shape by the time Jame gets there.

Horde Borean TundraJust finished updating the Borean Tundra section.

Unfortunately I got a little lazy towards the end and didn’t add a few coordinates that probably should have been added. The guide works fine as is, the descriptions are plenty to find the necessary quest mobs/flight points, but it really should have those coords. So, I can’t in good faith give this a star, it’s not perfect yet (even though it’s my own fault). But, then next person to edit it should have very little to do.

The file can be downloaded [url=http://sites.google.com/site/jiyambi/horde-leveling-addon-revisions/002_71_73_Jame_Borean_Tundra.lua?attredirects=0]here[/url].

    Snowflake Bloodelf Starter Guide changesHey,

I have edited Snowflake’s BE starter guide and made the following changes: Changed typos and added short descriptions where necessary: sometimes the coords would mix up in my german client due to zone problems. So a short note where to find an npc or where to go next helps a lot!

Also removed the “optional” from the first opt. quest circuit in snowflake’s guide. I did it with a pally and just dinged lvl 10 in time to go to the trainer when the guide sugested to do so. Without the circuit I would still have been lvl 9. Also you get a small bag which is always a good thing in the beginning if you can’t afford to buy one. 🙂

Apart from that I just added two small notes for explorer achievement that are not covered by simply following the guide. It’s Elrendar Falls and the Azurecoast which is hard to find if you don’t know about it. I added them when you’re near the location anyway so it doesn’t interfere with the rest of the guide. 🙂

Hope it helps to improve the guide. I’ve uploaded the new version here.

The guide is very good. I made it to level 12 in about 3 hours and 14 minutes. 😀

I Never Thought of That…..That’s just something that I never considered, but a great idea. When questing in Northrend I’ve made it a point of making sure I have all of the “zones” in a zone to get the achievement before I head to the next zone. It would be EXTREMELY easy to add that into the guide. I’ll keep that in mind as I’m revising…..Nice touch!!!!

As I posted before I only added those zones that were not covered by simply doing all the quests in the guide. Otherwise it would be way too much. 🙂 But a few hints here and there don’t hurt. 😀

I hope someone else will test the guide again though. 🙂 I just tried to load it and clicked through all the steps once. It seemed to work okay but you never know. 😉

Multi-part quest namesI just uploaded a large set of fixes to the Alliance guides (almost every one of them up to level 55). Most of the changes were obvious things, like adding item tags to hearthstone steps etc.

But one thing that surprised me was the number of quests that had ” (part 1)” instead of ” (Part 1)”. TourGuide 3.1.0.51-beta doesn’t recognize the string unless it’s got a capital “P” for part. It also doesn’t recognize other text, such as “follow-up”, as a multi-part quest. Was this working in a previous version of TourGuide, or is it just that I’m the only person it irritates?

Anyway, if this isn’t something generally useful I can back out those changes and just publish the other revisions.

Alliance Death Knight guideI know the coords don’t work right in the starter land, but since QuestHelper is able to put points on the map then TourGuide will eventually get it all together. So I uploaded my draft of the DK guide. It isn’t complete, since I generally run off to Outland before hitting the end of the text guide, but it’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Small fixThe file 002_54_56_Jame_Ungoro_Crater.lua has the name of the zone mis-capitalized in the registration line. This causes TourGuide to use the current zone to set waypoints instead of the Un’Goro Crater zone. The corrected registration line (first line of the file) is

    TourGuide:RegisterGuide(“[WoW-Pro | Jame’s 50-60] Un’Goro Crater (54-56)”, “[WoW-Pro | Jame’s 50-60] Winterspring (56-56)”, “Alliance”, function()

The only change is capitalizing “Un’Goro Crater” instead of “Un’goro Crater”.

Just a Thought…..Jiyambi, you made the comment about all the Achievements that you can get in the guide would be great, right?

I just uploaded the newest version of Alliance Borean Tundra, including all the points you need for the Exploration Achievement.

But I have been thinking……I know, scary.

What if I add the reading and “squirrel,” fishing, and pest stuff into those. Is that overkill? I can see both sides of it and I’m just curious. If you think it’s worthwhile, I can get in touch with Tekkub and see if there’s an event that’s fired within WoW that can have an automated step in TourGuide. Again, is that worthwhile, or just overkill?

My biggest fear is that I only have one more toon to go through and I’d need to do a “S.W.A.G” swing at the LUA before I went through with my last toon.

    Let me know……

Jame had this exact questionJame had this exact question on his blog back when Wrath was coming out. I think in the end he decided not to have all these little achievements.

I think it would bog down the guide, because some people don’t care about achievements. For the exploratory ones, well, it’s a matter of going to one more area on the map for the most part, especially in the Northrend zones. It’s something that’s small and almost completely covered by the guide already. But I think it’s best to leave the other achievements out.

Still, it would be good to hear from others about this. Any one else have a comment/opinion?

      • img
        Juil 7, 2009 @ 7:16

I’m mixed with this… MaybeI’m mixed with this… Maybe just add them as you go past them while in the guides? I know in the Howling Fjord guide or the Horde version at least, there’s a note about the Friend or Fowl achi.

But I can also see how they aren’t important to the overall ‘Leveling Guide’ which is what these are. If they were to be included, I would perhaps include them as optional bonuses as you pass them, but not an actual required step in the guide, and nothing to go out of your way to do specially.

    Alliance Guide UpdatesHi folks.

I’m working on compiling a new addon version. Unfortunately, some of the guide updates linked above are not functioning properly. Specifically, links from Boston’s 20-30 to Jame’s 50-60, on the Alliance side. The user who uses morrisland.com needs to either re-upload or fix the links if you want them included in the update. Sorry about that!

revising azuremyst.hey guys, I’m finally back and love to see that my guide made it into your shiny, new (for me at last) addon.

testing the addon with my druid I found some flaws:

snoflakes azuremyst guide is missing some draenei only quest flags

    the quests are:
    You Survived!
    Medicinal Purpose
    An Alternative Alternative

the problem is that then the notes have to be overhauled for draenei and non-draenei also.

I won’t edit that myself because it feels too complicated and I’m not that into the code yet. Instead I’ll check my guide portion of the addon now 🙂

Sounds like you are on theSounds like you are on the Alliance side.

Kalimdor was super hard for me as well, though I’m Horde side. Some quests you may have missed:
[list][*]The first turn ins for the salve creation quests in Felwood
[*]Instance quests. My last quest was the “Zapper Fuel” follow up, that comes from Ratchet and takes you to Sunken Temple and back. Most Kalimdor instances count, and some Eastern Kingdoms ones have follow ups in Kalimdor.
[*]Check WoWhead for quests which come from dropped items. I don’t know which ones these are for Alliance, but Horde had a lot. All those sea monster ones in Darkshore count, I beleive.
[*]Make sure you’ve done the baby zone quests for night elves and draenei.
[*]Check the Wowhead achievement for hints, it helped me a ton.[/list]

And good luck! I am still working on the Eastern Kingdoms one, but I have lots of instance quests to do over there so I think I’ll be fine.

Alliance!?!? Never!! For theAlliance!?!? Never!! For the Horde!!! (the ally one is 700)
Anyway, thanks for the advice, but everywhere else said basically the same thing about this ach.

The worst part about this ach is not knowing what quests you have not done, it’s horrible, and is seems like the only thing i can do is run around in each zone, one by one, looking for a “!” while grinding mobs that have a chance at droping an item. Is this what you did? Is there an easier way?

Blizz making there finished quest list visible would make the ach [b]much[/b] easier, I wish they would…

I am currently working onI am currently working on the Blades Edge(horde) guide, but I am going to write it to be compatable with the 3.3 version of TourGuide which means that it will not work properly until the patch. This is due to the new quest history api that will be provided post 3.3 and the changes in the way TourGuide recognizes quests in response.

After Blades Edge I will then start on the other horde guides and release them when they are all done or the patch comes out(whichever comes first).

For those that want to know; every step that is related to a quest MUST have a QID tag.

    ex:
    [code]
N Thunderlord Clan Drum|Q|Thunderlord Clan Artifacts|QO|Thunderlord Clan Drum: 1/1|N|To the southwest, inside the hut. (40.17,58.34)|
    [/code]needs to be changed to:
    [code]
N Thunderlord Clan Drum|QID|10524|QO|Thunderlord Clan Drum: 1/1|N|To the southwest, inside the hut. (40.17,58.34)|
    [/code]

I do not intend to do the alliance side at the moment so if someone would like to do that it would be great.

Thanks for the info. I’veThanks for the info. I’ve just finished a couple of new guides and will start the conversions on them to be posted after 3.3. I understand your example, but are lines like this one still correct.

      K Kill more Elementals |N|Keep killing the Elementals.| |L|38323 3|

I’m guessing it is, since this is really just a note that auto-completes, But I thought I’d ask before I have to do things twice.

      • img
        Oct 28, 2009 @ 9:49

Yeah that line should beYeah that line should be fine since it doesn’t actually complete a quest objective.

edit: After some testing on the ptr I’ve realized that EVERY step must have a QID. This is mostly for the benefit of someone who starts the guide late because in the new version, TourGuide will get a list of competed quests and any steps that have a completed QID will be checked off.

So, theoretically, if someone with Loremaster would start the guide without having done it before, it would automatically be completely finished because the addon knows he/she already did those quests.

If a step does not reference any quest(ex. hearth steps) use the QID of the next turn-in. If a step does reference a quest like scoots example above, use the QID for that quest.

Addon questionsI’ve finished testing my Icecrown (Horde) guide, but I have a couple of questions before I post it. 😕

Has anyone figured out how to make the daily quests stay checked off when you log out or reload the UI, or is this simply impossible now? Not a big issue, but it is a pain.

Is there any reason this line shouldn’t auto-complete?

[code]F Shadow Vault |QID|13168| |N|Fly back to the Shadow Vault. (43,26)|[/code]

It wouldn’t auto-complete using the Flight Path or flying in on my mount. I’ve also tried it without the QID and using (43.00,26.00) as coordinates, no luck.

I hope someone out there has some answers, because I’m stuck.

So like all other quests, if you do them they should stay checked regardless until the reset(servers are down atm unable to varify). We can actually take advantage of this and use the leveling guides (most of which include dailys) as daily guides after 80 (e.g. Grizzly Hills).

And on this note it [b]would not[/b] be advisable to use the QID of a daily for any step not related to that daily.

I think that area is called “[b]The[/b] Shadow Vault” the name has to be [i]exactly[/i] as spelled on your minimap.

/facepalmYea, I woke up today with the solution to The Shadow Vault question (literally the first thing I thought of). That’s what I get for testing at 3 am (/facepalm again), but I really wanted to finish.

As for the Dailies, it was just annoying to have to check them off manually while testing the guide and resetting my UI to make sure the corrections worked. It is cool that they reset, though.

Anyway, I’ll be posting later today.

    Hey everyone,

    when testingHey everyone,

when testing and revising the guides I often see steps like

    F Swamprat Post|QID|9775|

    or

    R Swamprat Post|QID|9774|N|(84.5, 55.1)|

which of course don’t work correctly due to the QID part. Is this for any special reason that the QIDs were inserted in the fly, run or use hearthstone etc. steps? Because as I said they only seem to make things worse.

    • img
      Déc 24, 2009 @ 14:31

About QIDsIn patch 3.3 Blizz added the ability to query the server for a list of your completed quests. We use this data along with QID tags to automatically check off any steps that have a QID associated with a completed quest. It was my intention that if you had completed all of the quests in a guide, but for what ever reason it did not show this in-game, you should be able to go into the guide and not have to check off anything to get to the next guide.

I did not observe any issues associated with this feature during my testing on the ptr and apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused. I have tried looking through the code, but due to unfamiliarity with the code and general lack of coding knowledge I have been unable to find a cause much less a fix. In the mean time, I have already started going through the guides to remove the offending QIDs.

        Déc 25, 2009 @ 4:37

Problem Solved?I’ve noticed the same problem and I think I’ve found a solution. The easiest one is to take out the QID on all traveling and Flight Point steps, but if you use the QID for the next quest you have to accept instead of any quest you have completed it seems to work fine. I think this is because once a quest is considered complete, TourGuide ignores any steps with the same QID that are before the Turn-in step.

I have edited the Northrend guides for the Horde up to Grizzly Hills (that’s where I was leveling). I also noticed that steps other than Notes (B,U,L, etc.) don’t always show up, so I have turned them into Notes (Kill steps seem to be fine). Gethe, I hope you haven’t done these yet, but you can [url=http://www.filefront.com/15211599/Horde-Edits-Northrend-up-to-GH.zip/]Download them here.[/url]

I’m off of WoW for the Holidays (traveling), but I do have computer access and will be working on some new guides for release at the first of the year.

        • img
          Déc 25, 2009 @ 10:54

For nowWell for now I have deleted the QIDs in the steps that messed it up. So how should we go about it now? Remove the QIDs or use the QID of the next Q that needs to be accepted or how again was that?

Daily Quests in TourGuideI have seen some comments asking for daily quests in TourGuide style, so I wrote these guides for the Northrend Daily Quests while I was bored over the Holidays and didn’t have access to WoW. [url=http://www.filefront.com/15287049/Daily-Quests.zip/]You can Download them here.[/url]

They are divided into 2 categories: Factions and Zones, so you can do your dailies however you want.

I have not done the Argent Tournament yet, but I am trying to work out a way to make it work (We’ll see what happens). Other than that I think I got most of them. I did ignore the PVP daily quest in Icecrown and [color=#009900]Riding the Red Rocket[/color] in Grizzly Hills as wastes of time, but you can figure out how to work them into your rotation if you must do them. I also didn’t include any of the Dalaran dailies (Cooking, Fishing, etc.). They are easy enough to do anyway.

Hope the New Year is treating everyone well so far and that you get some use out of these guides.

if the guides are the sameif the guides are the same for both horde and alliance you can use “Both” in the first line where you would put the faction so you’d only need one guide.

I’ll add a Neutral folder to the addon for this purpose in the next update.

      • img
        Jan 5, 2010 @ 7:48

Yea I figured that out afterYea I figured that out after I had made copies and put them in both folders, but no big deal it was just mostly cut and paste anyway.

On another note, I have run through the Zul’Drak guide again and revised a few things (I forgot all of the Flight Paths, so I added them too). I noticed though, when I got to the end the Sholazar Basin (Horde) guide didn’t auto-load and wasn’t in the guide list. After looking into it I found that it was omitted from the Guides.XML file. I corrected this and am now running through SB to tweek that guide. I will upload the updated guides and .XML files by the end of the week, probably. 🙂

It’s like the addon didn’t even load (it is checked on the addon page).

what guide were you using.what guide were you using.

also, be sure you delete the old version before updating.

the DK guides need to be in there own faction because, while the starting area is neutral, it leads into the main guide. there is also currently no way to have more than one possible guide after the current one.

By the way how do you do that code area, it looks much better that the regular [ code] tags I’ve been using

They weren’t in the Interface menu at all, but the newest version (Addon Update!!!Again!!) works so far. I’ll report any new issues I find.

Didn’t think about that for the DK guides, but it makes sense.

The code area is just the regular [code] tag. I do put a blank line in before and after the tag, if that makes a difference. I’m also using Firefox and it’s text editor.

    AddOn Update!!! Again!![url=http://www.mediafire.com/file/gjyzjoy0oem/WoW-Pro.zip]Download[/url]

Fixed a small issue with neutral guides not showing up.

Be sure to always completely remove an addon before you update them.

There is also a know bug that typically occurs when you go from an accept step directly to a complete step of the same quest. You will see something like:

    [code]
Message: InterfaceAddOnsWoW-ProMapping.lua:59: attempt to perform arithmetic on local ‘x’ (a nil value)
    [/code]

This happens because the addon gets to the next step before the game client has the POI info. im trying to find a fix but in the mean time you can just check and uncheck the step to get POIs.

    Suggestions for The Barrens (25-26)
    – Make “Mahren Skyseer” and its followup non-optional. It’s too easy to miss it, since the addon skips optional quests.

    – Also, add “Dig Rat Stew” from the tower east of X-roads as an optional, since it takes you also to Bael Modan.

Yea, a few things could beYea, a few things could be changed in the vanilla guides (I’m running through them again now), but when Cataclysm comes out all of those guides will be obsolete and need to be completely rewritten. Maybe you will be willing to write and/or test some of those guides for the site. Thanks for the input though and as you level, don’t hesitate to post anything else you think could be improved.

    Problem with localized addon versionHello.

As usual, I have done the translation of the Addon guides in french, and I am confronted to 2 problems:

    1/ settings are not saved
2/ quest objectives are not auto-completed

    [u]1/ settings are not saved[/u]

I have renamed the “Wow-Pro” addon to “Wow-Pro-FR”, and the “WoW-Pro.lua” and “WoW-Pro.toc” files to “WoW-Pro-FR.lua” and “WoW-Pro-FR.toc” (changing also the reference in “WoW-Pro-FR.toc” to use “WoW-Pro-FR.lua” instead of “WoW-Pro.lua”) – it’s the only things I did for non-guide files.

Each time I restart the game, I am confronted to the “No Guide” thing and the location of the “next step” window is reset.

Yesterday, I played a character in the Borean Toundra (translated by “Toundra Boréenne” in french), and here is the content of the Wow-Pro-FR.lua file generated in the SavedVariables folder :

    [code]
    WoWProAlphaDB = {
    [“char”] = {
    [“Hurlehaine – Confrérie du Thorium”] = {
    [“currentguide”] = “[WoW-Pro|Jame] Toundra Boréenne (71-73)”,
    [“completion”] = {
    [“No Guide”] = 0,
    },
    [“turnins”] = {
    [“No Guide”] = {
    },
    [“[WoW-Pro|Jame] Toundra Boréenne (71-73)”] = {
    },
    },
    },
    },
    [“profileKeys”] = {
[“Hurlehaine – Confrérie du Thorium”] = “Hurlehaine – Confrérie du Thorium”,
    },
    [“profiles”] = {
    [“Hurlehaine – Confrérie du Thorium”] = {
    [“statusframepoint”] = “BOTTOMLEFT”,
    [“statusframex”] = 542,
    [“statusframey”] = 109,
    },
    },
    }
    [/code]
No progression is saved even if I reached the middle of the guide…

[u]2/ quest objectives are not auto-completed[/u]

    Step sample not auto-completed :

[code]N Purifier le Chaudron est |QID|11647|QO|Chaudron est purifié : 1/1|U|34806|N|Il est juste au Sud de la sortie de la Flèche de la Douleur (88,30). Allez à côté et utilisez le Totem de la sage Aeire.| [/code]

I had the “Chaudron est purifié : 1/1” message displayed exactly as-is (I double-checked), but step is not auto-completed…

I don’t know how to solve these things. Any clues? Any ideas?

    • img
      Jan 13, 2010 @ 10:50

See if this worksI don’t have a clue about problem #1, but I have run into problem #2 a few times.

Sometimes I have found when all of the code is crammed together it doesn’t work (sometimes it does, I can’t figure it out), so:

[code]N Purifier le Chaudron est |QID|11647|QO|Chaudron est purifié : 1/1|U|34806|N|Il est juste au Sud de la sortie de la Flèche de la Douleur (88,30). Allez à côté et utilisez le Totem de la sage Aeire.| [/code]

      may need to read:

[code]N Purifier le Chaudron est |QID|11647| |QO|Chaudron est purifié: 1/1| |U|34806| |N|Il est juste au Sud de la sortie de la Flèche de la Douleur (88,30). Allez à côté et utilisez le Totem de la sage Aeire.| [/code]

I know it doesn’t make sense, but I have found this to work when the first example doesn’t.

      Hope this helps.

Maybe Gethe has an idea on the other thing.

In fact the sample I gave was not the one I am testing, here is it:

            [code]N Relevé sud de Frimarra |QID|11900| |QO|Relevé sud de Frimarra : 1/1| |N|(…|)[/code]

Here is the relative quest window:

            [img]http://daniel.chiaramello.free.fr/wow/images/tourguide_pb_quest.jpg[/img]

Here is the completion message I have:

            [img]http://daniel.chiaramello.free.fr/wow/images/tourguide_pb_qo.jpg[/img]

I tried with and without the “1/1”, with and without a space before the “: 1/1” (since english version does not have it) – with no luck in any case.

I tried to enter in the Addon code, but I failed to understand how it is working…

            Thanks again!

Problem with TomTom & TourGuide/WoWPro AddonLately I am experiencing that the TomTom arrow is only pointing to objectives like quest accept and quest turn-ins, but not always. Those locations/coordinates mentioned in notes e.g. in a combat step like this one:

    [code]
C The Warsong Farms |QID|11686| |N|Go NE to Torp’s Farm at (36,53). Then go SW to the
Granary at (35,55), then NW to the Slaughterhouse at (39.51,47.37).|
    [/code]

…are not being shown on the map, nor pointed at by TomTom.

I am using the latest version of TomTom, the latest version of the WoWPro guide and latest of LightHeaded.

Does anyone know why this would be the case?

This is because completeThis is because complete steps like that are mapped to the built-in quest POIs added in 3.3. Not all guides have been updated with this in mind. A am going through Northrend on my alt at the moment so the guides will be updated as I go. I’m in Borean Tundra right now.

There are many lines that have a quest ID that shouldn’t have one, like :

    F Refuge Pointe |QID|659| |N|Fly to Refuge Pointe. (49.30, 52.30)|

    or

    H Southshore |QID|661| |N|Hearth to Southshore. |

This makes the guide skip the line if you already turned the quest and it can be very confusing.

AwesomeThanks for the quick response. I’m leveling an alt to play with my brother who is new to WoW, so I thought I’d test ones that I hadn’t used and Joan’s was marked for testing. I’ll just continue with Maw’s, as it is quite awesome. 🙂

I have a few questions for when you “powers that be” have time. Are there other guides marked for testing that are no longer supported?

Is it worth noting updates that are needed or is that not too important because of the changes coming with Cataclysm? I’m happy to test them, but won’t clog the boards with comments if they aren’t necessary. lol.

There are quite a few beginning quests where the numbers are different (kills, drops, etc.), but so far what is listed is higher than needed, so it’s not really detrimental, other than time lost making extra kills.

If it will help, I’ll post mistakes, but if we’re just in a holding pattern with the guides until after Cataclysm, I’ll just burn through without taking more notes. 😉 I’ve noticed eight small mistakes and am at level 6.

Let me know if I should continue “testing” or just use the addon because it ROCKS and is FUN! 😀

I’ve done some work on theI’ve done some work on the guides (I updated Alliance for 3.3, but I don’t play Alliance, so I haven’t gone back in to fix some of the stuff that was found to be wrong with all the guides.), so I’ll give you my opinion.

This is what I’m doing. I’m leveling an Orc Shaman (55 now) and I just leave Notepad++ open behind WoW with the guide I am following in it, so when I find those small errors I can edit them immediately. When I get finished with all of the Old World guides I will post an update. Doing this on your own isn’t very hard. If you would like to do it this way check out the [url=https://www.wow-pro.com/wiki/james_leveling_guide_tourguide_style_contributing]How to Contribute guide[/url] if you need to.

Gethe said in a recent post that he is working through the Northrend guides and I’m going through the guides I’ve written for the third time, but we both play Horde, so any Alliance help would be great.

I’ll give it a shotOk. First off, I am basically syntax illiterate, but am trusting the guides on the site to take me through in baby steps. lol. I’m running through Maw’s Human 1-12 right now and noticed a few small issues. I will attempt to correct them, no promises tho. 😉

I have the guide open in Notepad and have no problem changing the numbers, etc., for quests. However, I have no idea what to do about the Use Hearthstone steps being skipped over. I also am not sure why there are two steps where there is no waypoint arrow or how to fix that.

Sorry to be such a pain! I know someone else could probably have this done in two seconds, but I would like to learn and help out. If I can do some of the simple revisions, you all can work on the big stuff!

I have thought of about a hundred other questions, but will hold off until I actually need to know the answer. (Just idle curiosity at this point.)

Thanks to all for being patient with this newb and for being so helpful!

Maw’s 1-12 Human GuideOk. I’ve been testing and revising this guide (with Scoot’s assistance, Thanks!) and there are a few steps where we can’t figure out why I have no Waypoint arrow. Here are the line numbers that I’m having trouble with so far:

    Line 51: A Rest and Relaxation |QID|2158|
    Line 54: A Kobold Candles |QID|60|
    Line 178: A Kobold Candles |QID|60|

Any suggestions anyone? I’m still testing and revising, but I think that with the advice I’ve gotten, I’m getting the hang of this. 😀

Some of the “Quality” Guides……Might need adjustment. A few of the last patches have changed the starter areas reducing quantities of monsters killed or items gathered for quest completion. I’ve noticed this in the Forsaken starter guide where the number of spiders killed in the Deathknell starter area were reduced.

Snowflake’s Blood Elf Starter (1-12)I have noticed that the Snowflake’s Blood Elf Starter (1-12) must have changed since I last tested and revised it a few months ago. The complete starting area (approx. lvl 1-6) quests are missing… 🙁

They’re not missing…Those quests are race specific to Blood elves, therefore the guide was edited to not show those quests to the other Horde races, because they can’t access them. Blood elves are stingy with the rep.

Storm Peaks Guide for AddonStorm Peaks guide for Alliance:

    http://www.filefront.com/16320891/002_79_80_Cyberlamb_Storm_Peaks.lua/

3 issues that I have found after testing:

    1) Although the correct item # is in the code to display the Icemaw Bear Flank to be used on Jormuttar, it still displays the Everfrost Razor

    2) When beginning the quest to kill the Iron Colossus, the flight arrow takes you to where the Iron Colossus is instead of to the Jormungers that you need to control to begin the quest. Coordinates do not over-ride.

    3) When you turn in the final quest for the guide, the game freezes. I have compared the code to other guides and cannot figure out what would cause this.

    Thoughts?

      Mai 1, 2010 @ 21:20

I can shine some light onI can shine some light on why #3 might happen, though I’m not sure. At the end of a guide, Tour Guide automatically tries to load the next guide. But if there’s not another guide or the listed guide can’t be found, it may freeze.

The other two issues, I have no idea >_<

      • img
        Mai 2, 2010 @ 14:50

Figured it out for #3…At the top of the LUA file, instead of listing the next file in the series, I had listed its own file name. So basically, it was trying to load itself in a loop, causing it to freeze.

This has been fixed and updated/re-posted:

I put this in the guide.xml file.

Is that correct? I have the addon swatter. Swatter tells me all bugs in the game and it said for my file something on line 17 was incomplete.
Maybe you should look at that.

A couple thingsFirst off, the version of the guide that uses the header format you have has been discontinued. For details on the new one coming out see Revized WoW-Pro Addon. The new one works more or less like the old one with a few addition (which I won’t cover here).

First thing to check, as noted by Jiyambi, is make sure it is listed in the guide.xml.
      Your line would look like:

This should add it to the list.
That said, I noticed a couple issues with the file itself that would need fixed so it would function.
The end of the file needs to have:

      ]]
      end)

This closes the guide and function out. Then just add the additional steps between your last one and that closing.
      Also your second step:

      K Plainstrider|747|L|4740 7|N|Kill Plainstriders untill you have 7 feathers and 7 meat. (46.15, 80.04)|

It is missing the |QID| before the 747.
After that it should work fine. I didn’t test it with those changes, but I didn’t see anything else off hand that would stop it from functioning.
The Verdant Note is just for the Druids, so you need to let the guide know that so it doesn’t show it to other classes.
      Something like:

      |C|Druid|R|Tauren|

This locks it into just Tauren Druids, so say a Tauren Hunter won’t see a quest they can’t pick up come up in the guide, who would need:

      T Etched Note |QID|3092|C|Hunter|R|Tauren|

(The |R|Tauren| is probably optional, not too many other races would probably be coming through the area in a way to pick up the quests, but it would stop the guide from showing them the quest if they did.)

We already have two taurenWe already have two tauren starter guides here on WoW-Pro. I would definitely suggest working on a different project, or perhaps working with one of the authors of the current guides to improve them, rather than creating a third one. However if you really feel the guide you are creating will be significantly better than the two we already have, then please post it 🙂

Val – you are welcome to letVal – you are welcome to let your friends use your guide, and we may use it as well, but I’ll be quite frank with you: in the new version of the guide we are only going to have ONE guide for each starter zone. It’s just too confusing for new users to our guide to have multiple guides for each zone. So we’ll either pick whichever guide the addon team seems to think is best, or we’ll make some sort of combination of them. So no, there is no guarantee we will be using your guide, though if you are talking about specifically an addon guide (not a “paper” guide here on the site) we may at least use the one you write as a framework and edit it.

Essentially – we can’t promise anything so please do not be upset if your guide is not used!

Yep, basically you can postYep, basically you can post a link for it and we’ll add your updates into the addon. But you should be aware of a few things first:

[list=1][*]We’re moving to a new addon format and updates made with the old format in mind won’t do much good. PM me if you want more information about the development of the new addon.
[*]The Old World (Azeroth) stuff will be pretty much useless when the expansion comes out, so I wouldn’t devote too much time and energy to it. Outland and Northrend probably won’t change much. However if you are simply leveling an alt through the 30s and want to make updates as you go, well that’s a different story and you can feel free to do so :)[/list]

Thanks again for your interest in helping out!
