Site changes

Hi everyone!

Thank you for being so patient in the past few days, it took quite some time to update the site and address a few important issues but overall the following things were implemented and should now work:

    • Google Site Search
    • WYSIWYG editor for guides and comments
    • Chat
  • More Karma and Private Message functionality
  • An app bar (at the bottom) which will show you immediately who’s online as well as all active chats and system messages
  • A new theme
  • A second hamster was added to the server-wheel, so the site will run faster
  • Random bugs were fixed

Things that unfortunately don’t work yet and that couldn’t be ported into the new version:

  • The biggest thing that got lost with the upgrade unfortunatey is the guide categorization and sadly – as it looks – we won’t be able to restore it. Guides are usually “outlined” in guide books and everyone (from Trusted Member upwards) can help to reorganize guides and put them back together by “outlining” pages. Generally there always is a main page like “Leveling Guides”. Attached to it are all its child pages like “Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide” – which itself has child pages as well (all the chapters Jame wrote). It basically works like a big book with chapters and sub-chapters. All the main “books” with their sub-chapters and child pages will then be visible here: https://www.wow-pro.com/book
  • The display on profile pages is somwhat broken for now and all the content a user has contributed isn’t shown on their profile page anymore. We’re working on it though.
  • Stars and user roles/ranks will soon be visible below profile pictures again.

Features incoming in the next days  (feel free to add suggestions):

  • Facebook connect
  • Facebook like and fan page integration
  • Simplification of navigation (we’ll trim everything down to the primary links on top with a drop-down menu if possible)
  • Display of most popular content on the front page

Cheers,

Snowflake

At some point, stickied postsAt some point, stickied posts had a different background. This made it easy on the front page to see what was stickied and what was new. Would like to see that return if no one minds and if it’s not too much trouble 🙂

I agree with that as well.I agree with that as well. Ideally, the “new” tag should be bold and in a different color, something flashy like red or green. 🙂

A possible solution that hasA possible solution that has worked for EVERY guide I've messed with, even the really complex ones – copy paste everything from the actual view into the rich text editor. BUT – No idea what that will do to your actual code. You'd be completely locked in to using the editor after that, though theoretically you can roll it back with the revisions tab. I would test on something other than your huge pally guide though. Basically Snowflake, at this point the editor is preventing people from even being able to work on their guides. I would honestly suggest removing it until a fix for this problem has been found.

I just took a peek at my WiPI just took a peek at my WiP guide after you mentioned this rich text thing and formatting. The formating looks alright in guide form (the only thing that got messed up was table widths, I’ve seen this in other guides though, and not a huge deal), but when I go to edit…*SCREAM!!!*Oh god, wall of massive text. Everything got fused together almost onto one single line. What a nightmare, makes me feel like crying. That’s gonna take a while to unravel…

Shadow CategoriesClass guides, leveling guides, guides in other languages. I think there were a few more. I think they are tied to the node at the top of those books – I know for a fact changing the node’s name does not get rid of them. I’m betting creating a new node, reassigning the sub-categories to the new node, and deleting the old one will get rid of them. Once we get the orphaned pages all in their new homes, I’ll work on this. It’s not critical at all, but I’m betting it will confuse the heck out of people who don’t know why those extra categories are there.

Disabling rich textDisabling rich text definitely does not fix the issue. The mangling happens when the guide/comment is loaded into the editor. When you disable rich text, it remains mangled. It would need to not be loaded into the rich text editor in the first place to fix the problem.

New commentsLove the new look and layout Snowflake, only thing I'd say is if the "new" tag above new comments was put on the right, instead of above the title of the new comment, it'd be a lot easier to pick out the new comments while scrolling down through them all

Something is REALLY funkySomething is REALLY funky with guide display. Just started maybe 30 minutes ago. Sometimes guides display normally, but in general they don’t display at all. The guide page loads, there are no errors, the comments and everything else display – but the guide is blank. But when you go to reply, it shows, or when you go to edit it.

An idea for a feature for usAn idea for a feature for us admins/moderators – some way to automatically generate a list of “orphaned guides” – guides that are not members of any book. Low priority, just throwing an idea out there 😉

WorkflowDid we lose the workflow settings in the upgrade? I can no longer see anywhere to set a guide as “Finished”, “Work-in-Progress”, or “Abandoned”. Yes the same things can be accomplished with the “Publishing options” secontion of the guide editing page, BUT – the workflow stuff was more intuitive for users, I think. Any chance of seeing those return at some point?

  • img

Alright. All the categoriesAlright. All the categories exist. I’ll add a link to them on the Nav bar.

They are mostly empty though, will need some lovin! If you have any questions about how to help organize guides, leave a comment or ask in chat!

Nope, does not work. Let meNope, does not work. Let me show you the comment I mean, and you can try to edit it and see what happens. Basically, the issue is not spaces, it’s newlines.

    https://www.wow-pro.com/wowpro_user_blogs/guide_declutter_purge#comment-32237

Also it seems that newlines entered into this editor don’t show up in comments.

Essentially, the editor is AWESOME for new users and people unfamiliar with using BBCode or HTML for formatting, but for power users such as myself… I don’t like having my hand held, I like to be able to do EXACTLY what I want to do with my formatting. If the editor didn’t mangle things when it loaded them, I wouldn’t have an issue with just hitting “Disable rich-text” – but as it is, an option to disable it on a per-user basis would be MOST welcome 🙂

Guide writing guidesI’ve spent quite a bit of time with these lately. lol. I’ll try to find them and get them classified. 🙂

  • img
    Nov 16, 2010 @ 2:39 am

Small thing for someday?Just a small suggestion. Would it be possible to make our oun “library” of screenshots? User shots that we could use for guides? I think in the end it would save time for a lot of users and encourage more guide writing participation. Back to Ashenvale for me! 🙂

  • img
    Nov 16, 2010 @ 2:37 am

I’ve found a temporary fixI've found a temporary fix for this.Go to "input format" and choose "Full HTML".Keeps the spaces and everything, as far as I can tell 🙂

  • img
    Nov 16, 2010 @ 2:26 am

So the WYSIWYG is awesome…So the WYSIWYG is awesome… BUT there’s a major problem with it. It removes ALL white space when loading in a comment or guide for editing. And some of that white space was not trivial, but was actual formatting white space. This completely ruins some comments and guides. I like it a lot but if that cannot be fixed, please allow us to disable it by default so it does not mangle our comments and guides. Not super urgent, but definitely something that will cause me a LOT of wasted time if it is not eventually fixed 🙁

I’ve been checking mostI’ve been checking most dungeon/instance guides in WoWPro and I can help classify those. I see I can create a new “book”/section if needed, but I think it would be helpful if you admins/mods define the main (first parents) “books”.
